This won't help you with the current problem, but you will be better off using
AVG antivirus if my years of experience using AVG is any indication. I tried
Avast but found it too aggravating pushing to buy this or that Avast product.
AVG just seems to do its job quietly and well, and with less advertising.

That’s a pretty decent throwaway ride if the hydraulics aren’t toast. Interior

The biggest issue I’ve heard form people who have done this sort of
modification is getting the “rest” position correct. Apparently there is slight
pressure on the speedo need to keep it on the rest pin, and if that’s not right
it doesn’t indicate properly.

At least that’s what I recall from when I read some experiences from people who
did the backlit faces for SL500s, I think….

Your effort is much better spent just cleaning up the cluster and the
rheostat to ensure you're getting all you can out of the original setup.
Embrace the originality of dim instruments! Other efforts will just result
in reduction in value of the car, and indirectly shortening its overall
life.

I also like to paint the gauge needles. I bought a bottle of the paint a while

Oh Dan... something I disagree with you on! I can't encourage this
behavior. Back in the day Dickarde posted about some hobby paint that was
a perfect match and that still lives on on the internet today. I've seen
cars people have painted the needles florescent orange as a result and they
look terrible. Even new old start gauges didn't have very bright needles.
They do fade, but not as badly as most people think.

Again, I say embrace the fact that they're old cars and leave them alone.

Re: [MBZ] brighter gauges?

2019-06-11 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
This is a good example of needle painting gone wrong:
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1984-mercedes-benz-300td-turbo-12/

Its also a good example of crazy pricing on BaT. I did work on this car
and didn't think it was that nice. Lots of stuff pointed to someone who
didn't know what they were doing working on the car. Poorly restuffed
seat, cheap shocks, painted needles... oh and that rocker arm shaft that
came loose. Lots of good intentions that were probably better left
original.

And it sold for $18,750 so what do I know?!

That top is worth $3k, I kid you not. There was a guy in Argentina that bought
one a while back on BW. Had it shipped to SA he wanted one so badly. They go

W123 wagons seem to be becoming the VW transporters of the Mercedes world. Why,
I have no idea. People are paying stupid crazy money for these cars in marginal
condition.

I’m loving that W111 auction right now. I think it’s up to $26k.

$18750? Holy cow.

I like 123s ok, I would not mind having an 83-85 turbo. I see them every now
and then for $2-3k but I can never bring myself to spend that on a 123 when you
can get a 210 for less

I believe so. The original face plate has a
small mark on the CCW side of the pin. I
think that is the starting point for the
pointer. At one time I lifted the needle over
the stop and that little mark was where it
sat. Can't remember if it was flat on it's
back or sitting up in the dash orientation.

At least that’s what I recall from when I read some experiences from people who
did the backlit faces for SL500s, I think….

Already did that and even found some nice
bright LEDs to go in it. That helped quite a
bit and didn't cost but about 50 cents. Not
really important to me as far as the value
for someone else. I already put a steering
wheel from a 190 into it. It's a bit smaller
and feels a lot better in the
handling/steering of the car. It has a
quicker response feeling due to not having to
turn the wheel as far to do the same turn.

Re: [MBZ] brighter gauges?

2019-06-11 Thread MG via Mercedes
I have to disagree Jaime. Before I did mine
they were almost white and now they have
gotten back to a yellow color from the orange
that I used. Still a bit better then they
were originally. I think it depends on where
you live and if the car is outside in the sun
all the time like mine is.

Oh Dan... something I disagree with you on! I can't encourage this

a perfect match and that still lives on on the internet today. I've seen
cars people have painted the needles florescent orange as a result and they
look terrible. Even new old start gauges didn't have very bright needles.
They do fade, but not as badly as most people think.

Again, I say embrace the fact that they're old cars and leave them alone.

Really makes the gauges “pop” with new paint on the needles.

Re: [MBZ] Trimmer mowers

2019-06-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
We've got a weed eater at camp with a 3 bladed cutter on it. Its a straight
shaft professional series Husqvarna with a harness so you carry the weight on
your shoulders rather than in your arms. With the harness properly adjusted I
can run it for hours without getting overly tired. Its one that Uncle Reg
bought in the mid-'90s I think and still runs great. It'll easily cut through

[MBZ] OT time to do something about by main desktop

2019-06-11 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I have suspected my power supply has been on the way out for a while. It
normally runs all the time and if it does get shut off sometimes it takes a
while to get it power back on. The fan in the power supply has died as has the
separate fan in the back of the case I added. Lately I have been getting blue
screen crashes every now and then. I really am not sure how old this system is
I built it myself. It’s running windows 7 and has a AMD Phenom 2.7 ghz
professor and 8gb ram. Other than the power supply issue it seems to be running
fine and is plenty past for anything I do on it. So I can replace the power
supply which I will do ASAP but this hard drive is not backed up which is not
good. I think I should get a new replacement and clone the drive over to a new
one, perhaps a SSD. It’s this or just buy a whole new tower either a prebuilt
one or build another one, or replace the motherboard too. Actually upon boot up
I see the bios is dated 2011, so it is at least that old.

I think what I will do is order a new power supply and HDD. If something later
on fails such as the motherboard I can upgrade it then. That is unless you
people thing I should just do it now. Have there been that many advancements in
motherboards and processors in the last 8 or so years?

An SSD will increase your speed a lot, even if your MB will (likely) not
support SATA III. IMO the sweet spot in SSD value is probably still 500GB. They
say SSD is more reliable now than HDD.

You can get an external case too for a HDD and if you need to back up
the one you have now, you can get another HDD and put it in there for
backup, or put your existing HDD in there and use another machine to
back it up to something else (SSD in another external case?).  Those
cases are cheap on Newegg, and are useful if you need to do something
quick because your machine has died and you need to get at stuff on the HDD.

has over 1tb free. I may end up getting a 3rd HDD and install in one of those

Two spoons, pry. I have also painted needles, using a Tangerine paint that is

I have been fairly happy with the 120G SSD's I used in our big systems,
the user files are still on big rotating media. (Easy to do with Mac.)
Unless you're doing A/V production with lots of big files you probably
won't be able to detect any speed difference versus all-SSD, and it's
vastly cheaper.

I also basically don't trust SSD's, but they have their place. I have a rant:

http://formicapeak.com/~jimc/flash.html

All of our systems are backed up to RAID via Time Machine, and two
of the four 2T RAID slices are offline and offsite at any given time.
An old Mac Pro makes an _excellent_ backup server, and is cheap.
Just have it sleep when not being used, and the power consumption
isn't even all that bad.

Re: [MBZ] OT time to do something about by main desktop

2019-06-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
More importantly, is there any reason to upgrade? If your current hardware
serves your needs, why bother spending the money for a new motherboard or
processor?

While there have been improvements over that time frame, the tasks you’re
currently doing with your computer probably haven’t changed significantly.

Re: [MBZ] OT time to do something about by main desktop

2019-06-11 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Actually, not so much.

More custom chips to condense the hardware, but the processors haven't changed
much in the last decade or so. 3 GHz is the operational limit for silicon
without serious cooling (read liquid nitrogen) and eight cores seems to be the
point at which task managing software eats so much overhead you don't get more
processing power.

They use less power due to smaller chip count (and the new MBs are about the
same size as a 5 1/4" hard drive) but circuitry wise they are very, very
similar.

Mature technology, even the number of transistors per square inch isn't going
up much these days.

I ended up lifting the engine slightly, just enough to take some of the

running the bolt in with a long extension and a socket.

Took some major gyrating but it worked, that’s all that matters.

Agree.   And buy a USB disk drive and use it to back up to regularly.

Get a new PS asap and get it in there. Heat kills computers! Apple MacBook
Pro's of a certain age are well know for both running too hot and having the
video chip crack loose, causing crashes. I have one -- I use third party
software to run the fans at full speed all the time to keep it from roasting.

Keep a backup up to date, too -- I had a scare last week when my main drive
went goofy, and Time Machine was out of date. Kept it in an external drive and
was in the habit of forgetting to turn it on occasionally, and was stuck with
losing everything since December, and then the restore failed to boot!

I was lucky, leaving the dead drive running overnight by accident got it going
long enough to clone it. Needless to say, I do backups much more often now!

That car is singularly the most un-exciting example I believe I have ever

It inspires me to buy it for the single pleasure of taking it to a car
shredder and making a youtube of it being chipped into scrap.
It redefines ugly, for me.
