Re: [MBZ] Plastic Welding Session

2019-06-15 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Dan,
Good result for first try !

Now that you have the bits all melted back together, give it a good sanding
with 220 wet or dry and a sanding block, then use some J-B Weld material
called "Plastic Bonder" with a plastic spreader [bondo type] to put a
smooth coating over the weld area.
The J-B Weld Plastic Bonder has 3770 psi strength and sets up in 15
minutes, will sand in 30 / 45 minutes [depending on temp/humidity locally]
It goes on nice and smooth, sort of semi liquid for a nice skim coat. Block
sand it to contour, fill any low spots you still have with a second coat,
and the injury will disappear. Spray bomb primer, sand, top color coat..

You'll never know it was damaged.

If you have other plastic bumper injuries on other cars a heat gun does
wonders for softening the plastic that's dented wear gloves and
"massage" the dent back to contour while the plastic is warmed by heat
gun If you play the heat just right, the paint and plastic will come to
contour without having to repaint, sometimes. Don't use to much heat, it's
easy to tell when the plastic is working temp to massage to shape, once you
do it.. combination of playing the heat gun over the surface and trial
pushing from the other side by gloved hand... withdraw heat gun and let
plastic cool... reheat and move more if necessary... etc etc.

I would expect you to not have as fine a control of the heat of the
various parts as you would like, which would be manifested by things
going soft and slumping away from where you want them to be.

But then, I could be wrong ...

I thought you said it was, "a BIG honking soldering iron ..."

I have had for years a 200 W soldering iron for soldering moderately
heavy things.

When I worked at Hewlett-Packard in Colorado Springs, I had the
opportunity to use a 600 W soldering iron in the course of my work.
It put out a lot of heat, which got me wondering. I turned off the
room's lights and let my eye dark adapt and, sure enough, I could
see the iron glowing a dull red.

Owned a '76 Chevette from '76 - '82. Paid $3600, sold it for $300, and the
only work it required was for brakes during that time period. This enabled
us to purchase our first Mercedes (1973 280).

Four screws and the bumper pulls right off. Took me all of 2 minutes to remove
it.

Took it into the garage and got it set up on stands so I could work on it.
Pieced together as many pieces of the blowout I could, using stainless steel
mesh to reinforce and hold them together. Got those put together as a unit,
stuck them in the hole and tacked everything in place. Couldn’t get to all of
it from the back because of the reinforcements in the bumper, but got most of
it.

Started on it from the outside. Slow going, but after about an hour I got it
all welded up. Isn’t pretty, but I think it’s better than a gaping hole. I
guess at some point I could sand it off and hit it with a rattle can, but for
now I’m going to leave it as-is. Gives it sort of a Frankenstein look.

Pics to follow once I get it back on the car.

Re: [MBZ] Plastic Welding Session

2019-06-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I had the pieces.

I also had plastic filler sticks that came with the plastic welder. That’s the
black stuff you see on the bumper. They also include a piece of stainless
screen, but you can buy 9” x 12” pieces of it from the Island of Large Wimmen
for like $6 for three pieces, too.

What you do if you have access to the back of the pieces is cut out a piece of
stainless steel mesh (screen) and melt that into the back of the crack or
pieces to give them some physical strength. Then you can fill in the cracks
from the outside with the filler sticks.

Grant posted a good YouTube video on how to do it earlier this week. That guy
used a sort of “spoon” that he heated up in a MAPP torch, then used it to melt
things. I tried that earlier in the day but it’s not terribly efficient and
you’re also dealing with an open torch. So when I saw that HF had a plastic
welder, essentially an 80W soldering iron with a big flat sort of tip on it,
for $16, I went that route.

Definitely better than the torch and spoon approach.

So did you have the pieces that broke out of the bumper?  or use some
other plastic for filler?

Took it into the garage and got it set up on stands so I could work on it.
Pieced together as many pieces of the blowout I could, using stainless steel

Started on it from the outside. Slow going, but after about an hour I got it
all welded up. Isn’t pretty, but I think it’s better than a gaping hole. I
guess at some point I could sand it off and hit it with a rattle can, but for

Pics to follow once I get it back on the car.

Re: [MBZ] Plastic Welding Session

2019-06-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I can see where this would work for a big crack in a valance or something like
that, but trying to reconstruct a hole like I have isn’t really realistic. That
and I can also see where the heat gun approach for repairing plastic is far
superior to the oversize soldering iron approach. The oversize soldering iron
method works, but it’s slow. If you have a large crack or area to cover, it’s
going to take you a while.

I’m wondering if I can use my heat gun to do this…

Re: [MBZ] Plastic Welding Session

2019-06-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Crude but effective. Had I desired to be a bit more careful about it I’m sure I
could have made it look better and be more of a candidate for sanding and
painting.

However, this was great practice for repairing the bumper on my S210. I bumped
into someone a year or so ago when I crossed the center line in a curve and
caught my right rear mudflap on their rear wheel. Scared the heck out of me,
the other driver bolted. No doubt because they probably didn’t have insurance.

I have the mud flap (good thing - it’s a rare OE mudflap from Germany) with the
piece of bumper still attached. It’s the leading edge of the rear wheel well
where the bumper comes up to the wheel well. I’m pretty sure I can get behind
it without a lot of effort with the wheel removed. If I can fix this it will be
a big win, as I won’t have to replace an otherwise good bumper.

In the last few years (since the drought ended) the bees swarmed at least a
half dozen times. As I understand it, the old queen leads the swarm as a new
queen is "born" to lead the old hive. Local beekeepers came and got a couple
of the swarms before they "got away" but most of the swarms apparently have new
homes somewhere in the wild. I have about 45 forested acres and there are
several other large "tree farms" nearby.

[MBZ] Plastic Welding Session

2019-06-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Decided to tackle the ML’s rear bumper gaping hole today.

Went to HF and bought a $16 plastic welding kit. A BIG honking soldering iron
with a big flat tip on it.

Pics to follow once I get it back on the car.

even with that Amazon had them about $50 cheaper.  The fitment detail
which lists that it fits my vehicle has a note that says lifetime

I know some of you folks order a lot of items from them.  If an item
has a lifetime warranty, or any warranty for that matter, if it is
ordered online for pickup in store, or ordered online and shipped to
home, if you want to return it for replacement can you just take said

bring the order info with you from the online order?

I’ve been watching the utuber vids of the guy stuffing a V12 in the 201

In the last vid he had a 3 liter inline 6 he got for some reason and made

900hp, I forget exactly. But sounds fun.

[MBZ] OT Plan Bee

2019-06-15 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
After my neighbor got sorted out on his anaphylactic reaction to the bee sting
the other day he’s back and working on the hive. He pulled out a coupla combs
(11 visible)and could see and feel a lot more way up in there. He has
determined it goes up into the rafters a lot, the honey is up in there. He
thinks it’s huge maybe 10-15 lb or more (most he sees are like 2-3lb), the
queen is up in there. Maybe I will get some honey out of it!

He’s trying to figure out how to get it dealt with, we might have to start
pulling off the beadboard panel on the bottom of the rafters or cutting into
stuff to get at it. H.

The bees are really upset now. He’s been using a shop vac setup to suck them
out but they keep boiling out from up in there. He’s got a goodly amount sucked
into a bucket now. Trying to get more. Might need to get his buddy over to
help.

I’m sitting here on the porch watching not too far away, they are pretty much
ignoring me which is good.

He figures they have been up in there a long time. Funny as I never noticed
them until a few weeks ago. They are amazing though.

It does. The connection is made through the bushing nut that holds the mast in
place.

Look in the trunk and make sure there’s a cable that connected to the cylinder
above the case where the mast goes. Right about where the cylinder meets the
inside of the fender should be a sort of dog leg with a cable connected using
an RG type screw connector. Make sure that’s tight.

You need to run your VIN to see if your car has code 489 (airmatic) and if yes,
then you buy part #30. Part #10 has "-489" after the name, the negative sign
means "not" for cars with code 489.

It had a few rust bubbles on the body, the interior was a bit worn, it wasn’t a
trailer queen which I kinda was drawn to.

[MBZ] truck shocks

2019-06-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
The Suburban needs shocks badly.  I have 2 sets of shocks that I have
had for a long time on the shelf.  IIRC one set is for the Duramax, and
the other set was for a former Suburban I had that I never installed
them on. When I got to looking it appears the rear shocks are correct,
but both sets of shocks appear to be for the Duramax as they do not have
the correct upper mount.  So, I guess I can go ahead and replace the
rears and do the front when I order them and they arrive, or just wait
and do them all at once.  I was hoping for a dramatic improvement in the
ride but if I do not do them all at the same time it will be less
dramatic.  I will probably just go ahead and do the rears today.

The invoice from automotivetouchup was still in the box with the paint.
Turns out I bought it a year ago when I bought the ML hood.
$11.52 to ship six 12oz spray cans via Fedex surepost, which was the slow/cheap
option.
If they were telling me to wait a week for mixing and shipping and I was in no
real hurry I wasn't going to pay extra to save a day or two.

I should clarify - I meant the W111 coupes when I spoke of designs.

Very nice. Nothing at all wrong with a driver quality car. I prefer them as
you don’t worry about a little bit of wear and tear if you drive it. A very
nice example of one of these can easily top $100k.

I never realized the rears of these were so curvy. That’s pretty cool.

[MBZ] W124 Door Trim Clips

2019-06-15 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
I now see that the end “clip” on the piece of trip in the middle of the door
(87 300D) isn’t really a clip at all. It has a screw that goes through the
door. Looks like you place the trim in place, slide it ahead then fasten it
with the screw-clippy thing.

[MBZ] EPC

2019-06-15 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Was looking at the EPC link Dan sent to see what parts would fit the air
shocks on the 03 $500E500,  211.070  which year cars might provide donor
parts (E, S, CL, whatever) and here it shows the parts for the fronts

http://mbepc.net/1/fg/e/64u/211070/0/32/054

I can't figure out how it works.  it shows the standard shocks as #10
and lists 4 part numbers, but then it says they are

AIRMATIC DUAL CONTROL / AIR SUSPENSION SEMI-ACTIVE

but it looks like the air units are #30?

Am I not understanding the schema here?

I ask because whenever I bought paint from APS/Tower I usually bought two cans,

If you get under it with something thin, like a putty knife, at the top and
bottom you can carefully lever it up and off the hood.

They’ve used this method of attachment for a while. My SL500 has the same setup
and it’s pretty easy to remove. Just go in small increments and alternate sides
and it should come off without too much effort.

I’ll look, but I’m guessing like a lot of the later model cars that have the
flat badge, it’s just pressed in place with two pins that stick into some nylon
sockets in the hood. Get a piece of masking tape on the hood next to it and use
a putty knife to see if it lifts off. The pins are usually at the 12 and 6
o’clock positions.

I’ll look at mine in a bit to confirm.
