It was indeed the column lock that failed, not the tumbler. Tom Hanson confirmed that the tumblers are NLA, although he did say "There might be some of these back next year, but I can't be sure yet.", so there's hope. I would have ordered a replacement tumbler out of an abundance of caution, but since they're NLA it'll have to be looked at, cleaned and lubed. Fingers crossed! Re: [MBZ] 79 300SD W116 - the dreaded "key won't turn" situation
Waytago! After the cylinter and key were out, did the cylinder turn freely? (Indicating the problem was actually in the steering lock itself) In 40+ years, I've never heard of a steering lock failure. They are normally not lubricated. Tom can confirm(or refute) that. David Bruckmann via Mercedes wrote on 7/16/19 3:09 PM: Victory! For reference, unlike later models, the W116 doesn't require the key to be in a particular position to remove the electrical connector from the ignition lock. By loosening the three flathead screws slightly, I was able to determine that the electrical portion was NOT the problem. By some MIRACLE, the key was turning JUST far enough to allow me to depress the lock pin that prevents removal of the steering lock from the steering column. If that hadn't been true, it would have been a bloodbath because there's really no room to work in there. Anyway, I lucked out and then just had to unbolt the steering column tube (two bolts) and basically reef down on the steering wheel until the lock assembly is withdrawn from the column tube. The normal procedure is to remove the protective cap before attempting to remove the column lock, but since I couldn't turn the key... Anyway, chuffed with victory having extricated the column lock, I set to work on it in the kitchen! I needed to get that key to position 1 in order to remove the hardened steel cover. I attacked the back of the steering lock assembly where there's a cover plate pressed into the surface. It took about 15 minutes with an oscillating Dremel tool until whatever was in it came free. Hallelujah, I was able to turn the key, extract the lock cylinder, and do the happy dance. I have ordered a new genuine MB column lock from FCP Euro and it will be here tomorrow! Incidentally, the column lock was completely dry, as was the tumbler. I'll grease them up with hopefully-appropriate lube before reassembly. Have sent a note to Tom Hanson at the Classic Center as well to see if there's really no longer any ignition lock tumblers available for this car. Re: [MBZ] The $500E300 did its job tonight
A lawyer friend defended a similar case, driver crashed car, was on scene and wondering around for about thirty minutes. Deputy arrived, noted smell of alcohol, driver failed the field sobriety test and breathalyzer. At court, deputy testified that he did not see driver operating the car, did not observe when the drinking occurred. Driver was not advised of Miranda rights, so any confession was not admissible under the fifth amendment. Government could not prove when the alcohol was consumed, and adequate time has passed between crash and arrival of deputy that driver could have become impaired after the crash. Not guilty. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC On July 16, 2019 12:27:14 PM EDT, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: >On 16/07/2019 11:10 AM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote: >> Is that evidence always admissible in court? We have all these "water" oaks on the Island. I don't know if they are specific type or what, that's what everyone calls them. Haha, yeah "insurance" I do have to call and cancel it though. Woke up a bit sore this morning but my buddy and I went to collect the car, load it on the trailer, which was a bit of an effort but that worked out the kinks. So the car is back home. Couldn't get the hood popped, will have to work on that at some point. Intercooler is all bent up so that part is dead. I don't think much else got damaged, the radiator probably gone. Most of the damage is low on pass side front, and the fender pushed back. I don't think it is fixable so will have to become parts. Good new tires on it so those can be recycled to something. At some point I'll dismantle it and save the good bits and take the hulk to the knacker, get a few $$ for it. It ran great so the engine and tranny are good, I wonder what that would transplant into, get a diesel again! I'm actually reminded of last summer talking to a Canadian friend who is a gun owner. He mentioned something about getting a firearm shipped to his house. "Wait a tick, you can do that?" Apparently you can. In retrospect I don't think I asked if it was because of Canada's national gun registry or whatever. He did mention that if he took his AR-15 out in public, like had it in his car not locked up with the ammo in a different box, I don't even remember all the strict measures, he'd go to jail. Buuut he had another black, plastic gun in .223 that was basically the same as an AR-15 without actually being an AR-15 that he could get away with all sorts of foolishness with. Apparently Canadian lawmakers are just as dumb as those in the USA. Distant cousin was killed about five years ago. Tree fell across a road in the UP in a storm at night, blocking the road. Two of them stopped, Mark got a chain saw out of his truck and the other guy helped, then somebody came along and hit Mark, or hit the tree into Mark, I don't remember exactly. Which is why I gave up having an old car as a daily driver. I go too far too often. I was working on my car every week. As the 123 cars get into middle age it gets more difficult to keep them in really good shape... Well that and I hated driving them into the ground. Cars here don't wear out so much as fade away. -Curt On Monday, July 15, 2019, 10:03:59 PM EDT, Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes wrote: The thing is that car is more than half worn out. If a door won't open, it's toast -- too much distortion in the body to ever get right. And this indeed is why I drive a Benz -- saved my life when a guy ran a red light due to inattention and T-boned me doing 60. Mashed the car all to hell, but I walked away. Wow, sorry to hear about that, and also glad to hear that no ride to the hospital required. Well, those turbo engines have some value if you want to pull and keep that. Looks like the intercooler probably got crunched though. There are some other electronic modules that commonly go bad like the K40 relay and the gear shifter box, and the radio. - Max Charleston SC On Tue, Jul 16, 2019 at 5:08 AM Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > Rode to a community meeting this evening with a buddy. Re: [MBZ] OT electric motor assembly
Despite one part (the extra ring / spacer) left over, the pump ran for about five hours straight with no issues. I'm calling it a success for now. I just re-started the pump after about 60 hours of sitting, and it had held its prime and resumed providing water to my redneck sprinkler system (buried garden hoses, soaker hoses, and one sprinkler hidden so the HOA won't ding me for leaving garden hoses out) with no issues. I did learn that the local Ace hardware store that originally sold me the pump has a resident expert, and if I'd brought him the box of parts, he probably could have told me exactly how it goes together. - Max Charleston SC On Tue, Jul 16, 2019 at 12:16 AM Craig via Mercedes wrote: > > Any more action on this, Max? > > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
