My recollection (and you know what that's worth! :-) ) is the extra
cylinder of the OM617 compared to the OM615/616 was added to the rear of
the engine as far as placement in the engine compartment goes.

The same water pump/pulley/fan is on the same front of the block in all
three engines, though the OM617 does have the thermostatic clutch which
the others do not.

The automatic pool cleaners are great! We have a Hayward Tigershark robotic
pool cleaner. When it is done, all I have to do is rinse out the filters,
reinstall them and it’s ready for another round. This pool has an electro
hydraulic system to roll the cover in and back out when swimming is done which
cuts way down on leaves and debris entering the water. Most of the year, It
requires a cover pump to drain the rainwater. We were VERY lucky to find a
house with a pool here in western Oregon, even rarer, it’s and in-ground pool.

Better change the motor mounts first.   Chances are the engine raised up
so the fan nicked the shroud.   Or the bottom tabs were not secured in
the radiator allowing the shroud to move back into the fan.   300D
shroud is shorter (engine is longer)

Because of the number of pools in the area, pool maintenance companies are a
dime a dozen and do the work for cheap. To have someone come weekly, treat the
water and clean the pool and filter is often in the range of about $20. Much
like lawn maintenance. I can get someone to cut my grass and trim the yard for
maybe $20-$30 a visit. While I currently maintain my yard, once all of this is
over I’m pulling the plug and paying someone to do it for me.

With the screened enclosure there is no detritus that gets into the pool such
as leaves. Sure, there’s airborne dirt, but the filter gets most of that. I had
an automatic pool cleaner at my last house, and boy oh boy, are those things
great! One of the best Father’s Day gifts I’ve ever gotten.

Skeeters are only bad certain times of the year, but yes, when it’s that time
the screened enclosure does keep them out.

The 300D has a wider radiator. I do not know if that affected the shroud;
it's been too long since I converted our 240D to a 300D.

Before I changed the engine mounts on our '82 240D/3.0 they were pretty
bad, but did not cause the fan to hit the shroud.

Did the fan hit the shroud on the bottom of the opening for the fan, or
the side?

You need panels, battery, and a current sink (like a BIG tank of water with a
resistance heater). Power from the panels went to household loads, then to the
battery, then down the sink or, if you hit the sell button, onto the grid.

In "guerilla solar" (unpermitted) installations, the meter ran backwards in
sell mode, something you didn't want to be happening when the meter reader came along. In
simple guerilla setups you left out the battery and current dump, and just ran all the
excess onto the grid. All the inverters on the market had appropriate shutdown when the
grid went unstable.

Looking back on it, I think the dump was needed for wind turbines, not solar
panels. Solar-only charge controllers just let the solar go open circuit if the
power was unwanted.

Mitch.

One would think that a wind turbine could do the same. Just need an auto
clutch to disconnect from the charging unit when power was not wanted.

I personally do not see the attraction. They are ugly boxes.
I would much rather have a big old Mercedes diesel sedan and a newer
domestic SUV with 4 wheel drive,  for a whole lot less money.

So I am thinking to go look at this car tomorrow. For the money it has a
lot of "value" if it could be monetized or somehow used.

No title, no key but it runs? (when my ex took off and left it or took
my key and title?)  Not sure how one could move it onto a trailer if it
wouldn't go into neutral.  Not sure how to deal with it if I was able to
get it.  I'm sure there is a story to it, I guess I need to find that
out, make sure I would not be buying a stolen car or something in
contention somehow.  I suppose getting a solid bill of sale would be a
reasonable step.  But it sounds fairly shady... but who knows...

Re: [MBZ] Nice E430 for Kleb

2019-10-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I would say that about 2/3-3/4 of the homes built in the last 20 years have in
ground concrete pools with the associated screened “cage” covering it. Lack of
a pool here isn’t a dealbreaker, but it can affect the attraction of the house
for certain buyers.

The nice thing about a pool is not just the obvious (swimming) but the
additional living space it affords. In our previous house here we had a nice
deck surrounding the pool that provided a lot of space for entertaining. A
portion of it was under the eaves of the house where 7’ high sliders opened to
effectively make the pool part of the living area during the cooler months of
the year. I had a TV mounted on the wall and patio furniture so it was a nice
place to go and relax while watching the Succaneers, for example.

I failed to mention that part of the cost of a retrofit is the screened
enclosure around the pool - that’s a good $20k, too.

2019-10-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We can handle two houses, so we’ll get the new one in order, move everything,
then get the old house all spiffed up and ready for sale in the spring. Paint,
epoxy floor in the garage, network cabling, etc., will get done in advance
before we move in. It’s in really good shape and pretty much ready for move-in,
so getting it in order shouldn’t take a lot of effort.

And yes, it has a three car garage!!! That was something the wife wanted, too.

I think Kleb has run some E430s and they’re not much worse than the M112, I
think. Definitely more peppy, though.

As for the house situation, this is a continuation of the wife wanting to live
in our old neighborhood and getting a pool, as our current digs don’t have a
pool. Adding one after the fact is cost prohibitive compared to buying another
house with one. A pool only adds about $20k to the value around here, while
putting a new one in on an existing home is easily $50k-$60k. Not going to
recoup that cost when the home is sold, for sure.

Wife also likes pool for therapeutic purposes as well with her hips and stuff.

If it works out, we’ll be living across the cut-de-sac from our first house
that we built in 1996. Being just a few blocks away from the existing hacienda
the move will be easy.

AMG Monoblocks?
Seems like those would cover most of the $500.
And that 55AMG engine should be worth something or drop it in the ML.

This E320 is pretty peppy.  Have not got a fuel mileage reading yet as I
just filled it on Friday.  Would the 430 be even more fun or just suck
more gas?

Re: [MBZ] Tesla Model 3: More "Global Climate Change" than a Mercedes

2019-10-17 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Karl - I like the idea of this one: all the equipment is on the house side
of the meter, so electric company only sees a reduction in your usage. I
did not study their claimed ROI, so economics aside...

If a home-owner installed this DIY or acted as his own general contractor,
and assuming no HOA interference, would someone like Dan in FL be able to
do this without consequence?
