Re: [MBZ] Question For Craig

2019-12-14 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
the advantage the powered ones have is that they will work at any
speed.  The Sav-A-life ones (made in Germany) need air moving at 45 MPH
or more before they work. The powered ones are probably better for
motorcycles.   The passive ones need 2 to work, because they generate
sound at different frequencies, thus create a beat like a twin engine
plane out of sync.

(are we still allowed to use the word frequencies?  Or is it supposed to
be hurtzencies)    kilocycles and frequencies make sense.   Hertz and
kilohertz just hurtz my mind and ears.  Everyone knows hertz rents cars,
not cycles.

I've used passive (ram air operated) deer whistles for years. Hard to
quantify things that don't happen but I haven't had deer problems
while many others have. Like the powered version the whistle is
supposed to alert deer before they get startled and bolt into the
road. I live on a rural road in NC, by the way. I frequently see deer
in my yard, especially after acorn fall, and have to remove dead ones
from my road a couple times a year.

Re: [MBZ] I hate windows

2019-12-14 Thread Russ Williams via Mercedes

Max the link that was posted works.
Last night I did a Win 7 to 10 upgrade using a USB drive created with
the M/S app.

This was the 15th I've done in the last 2 weeks.
If you run the setup from a running system it will keep all your
programs and data in place.
If you wipe the drive and do a New install of 10 you will need the Win 7
product key from

your system.
So far I've only had one system that the upgrade would not take. Kept
giving me a "System

Security Issue" message.
Remember the up date will be lateral. Home to Home Pro to Pro.
Any questions send me an email.

It's unfortunate that some of you hate Windows. I've used it since it was a

Win 95 tried to be compatible with everyone. Win 98 was good. Win XP was really
good. Rarely used Win 2000. Win 7 was extremely stable. But I like Win 10 best
of all. I get periodic updates that load at night with no issues. I run it with
Norton antivirus provided to me free by Comcast. Norton co-exits with Windows

I just saw it in a trucking magazine and thought someone here might be
interested, so I posted the information.

The information they present is quite convincing, though the "How It
Works" section is, in my opinion, somewhat lacking.

We don't have a deer problem here (though we might in North Carolina), so
I have not purchased one yet.

Invasive plagues?

Maybe relates to climate change, but I have noted an increase is
nature attacking. There was a story in the paper about a deer out
clubbing in the nightlife district a few weeks ago. Middle of
downtown, rollicking Friday night around 1am with drunks, hookers,
club bands causing a ruckus, and Bambi is right at home.

Last summer had a massive incursion of fluffy tail wabbits with no
fear of humans. Middle of the day hopping slowly and munching on
gardens. Nights were worse, with marauding packs of the beasties on
sidewalks and streets. Beady little eyes all aglow when you hit them
with headlights. And all manner of raised gardens enclosed in wire cages.

A few years before was the plague of snails. Non native sort. Escaped
from chinese flower pots? I had not seen the sort in 40 years of
playing in the gardens. Slugs abounded, but these new mollusks were
gathered in crowds under all sorts of shaded areas. Lots of weird
shell designs, makes you think they were following the gender confused
vibe.

Now, I am seeing a creeping moss overtake the gardens and walk ways.
This stuff is not the slow growth type that I would pressure wash
every decade or so as it slowly thickened. The new stuff is fast
growing, velvet smooth and not the emerald greens of the native type,
but a vibrant kelly green. Comes on in mats on pavement and retaining
walls. In two months! Very much like the plague of disposed junkies
and other un-homed in Seattle.

Just got home with my latest addition to the fleet: the 1994 E320 wagon
that Floyd spotted on FakeBuch. The lady was asking $900, we settled at
the usual Kaleb price ($500).

The seller turned out to be the lady's Dad, title was recently issued in
his name, not sure what the story is there. Maybe Daughter was owning /
driving, and when she moved up to something newer, Dad took over?

The radiator had blown out a big chunk on one of the plastic end tanks.
Today I installed a used radiator taken from my '95 Cabriolet, filled up
the coolant and topped up the ATF and also added a quart of engine
oil, but

it didn't need a full quart. Test drove it a bit out near Floyd's Vast
Estate (where he let me store it for a bit), found no fluid leaks and
brakes and lights that work enough to be legal, so I gently drove home.
This coming week I'll get plates on it, and then address some of the
niggling issues like central locking that doesn't stay locked, and add it
to the driving rotation. That is, until I have time for the Cabriolet
resurrection, and then swap an OM603 into this new wagon.

So I'm up to five star cars, and three of them actually move under their
own power. This new cheap wagon actually has working AC! Need to sell off
one or two now.

Re: [MBZ] I hate windows

2019-12-14 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Winders 7-10 is hardware specific.  You'd need a drive from a computer
with the exact same components.  Then it might let you use it with the
mac address on your MB or enet card.

If you buy the HD with winders installed, but not configured, it will
work on any compatible hardware, but will want a valid license and
activation.

NO free lunch AFIK.   Maybe if they release a winders 2020 or 11 or
winders KP or such, they will allow a "free upgrade" period as they did
with 10.

It may be simpler to buy a $100 or $200 used box with winders 10
installed and a valid license.

For situations other than Randy's where a 3rd party vendor is demanding
lose10, you can keep running XP or 7 but the winders defender will die,
so in that case I get avast or similar.

Right now, the installed base of xp is so small that I doubt hackers
will attack it.  Some generic hacks and viruses will still work, so you
need AV for that.

You can find people who sell a hard drive with Win10 preloaded on eBay
for not too much money. Check their reviews as sometimes Win10 is
loaded but the license number is not valid. It will work, but
constantly remind you to activate Windows. Or you might try some of
the parts sellers on eBay and email them about a drive with Win10
loaded and activated.

Which may break drivers for hardware you depend on. They get to do that without

Also without telling you they'll replace manufacturer specific drivers with

[MBZ] Cheap Wagon

2019-12-14 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Just got home with my latest addition to the fleet: the 1994 E320 wagon
that Floyd spotted on FakeBuch. The lady was asking $900, we settled at
the usual Kaleb price ($500).

The seller turned out to be the lady's Dad, title was recently issued in
his name, not sure what the story is there. Maybe Daughter was owning /
driving, and when she moved up to something newer, Dad took over?

The radiator had blown out a big chunk on one of the plastic end tanks.
Today I installed a used radiator taken from my '95 Cabriolet, filled up
the coolant and topped up the ATF and also added a quart of engine oil, but
it didn't need a full quart.

No cougar sightings here but there's a wily wabbit who stalks me from my
backyard pepper patch. He lives under the deck. Yet to attack but I feel
vulnerable nonetheless.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Smoldering iron still works

2019-12-14 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

Waytago!    Strong work, if fiddly.    THanks for the report.

Jim Cathey via Mercedes
December 14, 2019 at 8:42 AM
In my travels and travails I somehow managed to end up with
a Canon 10D camera that I purchased for $1. Non-functional,
of course. For an auxiliary Christmas present for my son, I decided
to see if I could fix it. He has a nice phone camera, but those cameras
are decidedly limited on the long end, and the 10D can take all the
glass our family already has.

Canon's cameras seem to be plagued with blown fuses, which are NOT
easy to replace. An older 6MP camera is not worth the price of repair,
but it's built very nicely as befits its original $2000 price tag.
This camera
has a reputation for taking nice pictures, within the limits of its
resolution
of course. It's basically the nice version of the Rebel I have for a
backup.

Anyway, I decided that risking $1 in ham-handed home surgery was not
a bad thing to do. Out came the screwdriver and the smoldering iron,
and in I went.

A couple of hours later the kitchen table was covered with screws and bits
of disassembled camera. The fuse is on the DC/DC board, which is deep
under the shutter button. You have to desolder some flex circuits in order
to remove it, once you can reach it.

With it out, and its RFI shields unsoldered and removed, I could see that
F101 was open-circuit, as expected. I bridged it with solder. ($1,
remember?)

Reversing the process to assemble was harder, and slower, duh. I'm not
sure
all the screws went back in their exact places, but nothing seemed too
out of

whack. I might have been one short, I can't remember exactly. ($1!)

Anyway, with it all together I put on the battery grip (the actual
first thrift-shop

purchase, and what sucked me into this whole mess in the first place) and
installed a CF card and a battery from my Rebel, and it worked!

Of course, now it needs a basic lens to live on it, and batteries and
a charger,
and... I think I'll be in it about $100 by the time I'm done. Single
biggest
expenditure is the lens, but it also will work on any of the other
cameras.

This rig is aimed at taking the telephoto shots that a camera phone simply
cannot do.

I have read reports claiming that cougars can avoid leaving prints or otherwise
somehow are particularly hard to track. I have not had contact with any, so
have no such personal experience, but I do not underestimate the intelligence
of wild critters. We do have frequent credible sightings of cougar in my
neighborhood.

I know this woman who lived in Colorado for some years. She was out with her
daughter walking the dog in the snow, to go down the road a mile or so to get
the mail. When they came back they saw cougar paw prints right in their boot
prints, it was following and stalking them and was not too far behind. It was
using their prints for “cover.” They could see where it broke off to get off
the road. After that she always carried a weapon whenever they were out like
that.

Do like I did and join a company where it is provided for you?

I don't much like it, it's weird, but so far it's been stable. For work I use
W10 and Ubuntu. Primarily both are hosted under VMWare on my Mac,
which is running High Sierra. My other machine, this one, is running
El Capitan. All physical machines are gated through a 4-port KVM to
my 30" monitor.

Regardless of environment, the biggest part of my working day is spent
using emacs and a shell.

I know this woman who lived in Colorado for some years. She was out with her
daughter walking the dog in the snow, to go down the road a mile or so to get
the mail. When they came back they saw cougar paw prints right in their boot
prints, it was following and stalking them and was not too far behind. It was
using their prints for “cover.” They could see where it broke off to get off
the road. After that she always carried a weapon whenever they were out like
that.
