Well, it IS January in Alaska.   If they want more tropical temps, I'd
suggest they move into the tropics.   Someplace with a kindly socialist

Clay via Mercedes

there was all manner of hullaballoo about the weather in AK this past
summer. Much blame given to anthropomorphic climate assault. At the
moment the region is suffering a possible record breaking stretch of
the very colds. Much gnashing of tooth and rending of tunic by the
populace. I will admit there are many vehicles with shattered rear
windscreens. Must be very uncomfortable to drive.

What just was admitted, after somebody bothered to look at records, is
that there have been 30! stretches of extended periods of very cold
(below 263*K for at least a week) in ANC since 1950. That is like
minus temps in F degrees for longer than a week. The most recent
extended stretch was in 2009. Expected over night temps will be in the
-27f range the next two days.

You are correct three satellites are needed to establish a fix, but there

It could be because of satellite position.
GPS [I believe it still does] relies on signal from 3 satellites to
establish it's coordinates.
It could have been a situation where one or more of the needed signals were
over the horizon and your Dash GPS was not getting coordinate information
to do it's internal calculations. Temporary triangulation loss.

[MBZ] GPS

2020-01-09 Thread Craig via Mercedes
Since the BRV's speedometer is recessed in the dash and since it reads
high when it is cold, I have been using our GPS as a speedometer for some
time now.

Shirley had a dental appointment today so we were in northwest
Albuquerque. After her appointment, I programmed the GPS to find the
quickest way to the Fleet Pride store in downtown Albuquerque and we
were off (you have to be off to do this kind of thing! :-) ).

As we were driving east on Paseo del Norte, I heard the GPS saying,
"Recalculating!" several times. Then I noticed I was going slower than
the speed limit of 60 mph -- the GPS said 52. I accelerated and noticed
the GPS said 48. I then looked down at the speedometer (it was after
sunset and I had the lights on so the speedometer needle was easy to
see). It said we were going 65!

I slowed down and push the button on the GPS to return to the map
display. It showed the vehicle about 500' north of the roadway and going
on neighborhood roads instead of on the freeway! When we crossed the Rio
Grande (where there are no neighborhood roads parallel to the freeway!)
it decided we were on the freeway afterall.

We got off on the left side of the freeway, turned right, and went under
the eastbound lanes and stopped at a stoplight with a clear view of the
sky. I looked at the GPS's map and saw it said we were about 500' west of
our actual location. This continued as we headed south on 2nd street.

I thought this was rather odd, having never seen anything like this
before.

It could have been caused by someone transmitting locally on GPS
frequencies, but those are predominantly line-of-sight and we had
travelled a few miles and were on the other side of a freeway
overpass's earth berm. In addition, after a while it started working
correctly again.

It occurred to me it could have been due to the Department of Defense
turning on Selective Availabilty (which has been off for several years).

Anyway, I first noticed the wierdness about 1640 MST (2340Z).

Fewer people are living here. The annual count (7/18-7/19) reports that for
the third year in a row the state has lost population. Births are down, deaths
are rising, the children (18-) are a bit fewer, the 18-64 population is lower
by 1% (younglings leave) and old people grew by 5% (crazy old white
professionals with good retirement accounts). Listening to the codgers
complain about the way it used to be is sort of fun, as they seem to have been
the pioneers whose families came up homesteading in the depression and WWII
era.

Talk about cultural appropriation, they think they are native Alaskans. Some
even wear appropriated fashions. Which I understand are quite warm, but remind
one of large sunburnt white folk in Hawaiian shirts speaking pidgin patois. At
least the retired white folk here retain their professional grasp of english.

I am trying to figure that out myself.

I am exploring a number of continuing education opportunities in hopes of
learning about what sort of crazy is required and how sustainable is living

way for it to be self sustaining at all.

One class is about “Food Security”. For most of the rest of the world, that
means "is there something in your belly?" Around here it would be more akin to
“are you following the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints teachings on
stocking away food?” After the quake a year ago there was a dearth of fresh
food (post Thanksgiving) to the point that the Costco was without perishables
on the shelf and coolers. This past November there was some marine weather
that kept produce from getting shipped, or making landfall in ANC for about a
week.

I learned that in 1955 over 50% of the food consumed in AK was locally grown.
Now only 5% is local. Over $2Bn annually is spent to send comestibles here.
The lecturer and audience of old farts were quite vocal and emotional about how
it was not socially justice enough. Meanwhile, I am thinking that NASA should
be providing grants to use the state as a laboratory for how to provide food to
the future Mars and Lunar colonies. If they can make it work here, there is a
great likelihood that it should succeed millions of miles away from Earth.

There are a few start up indoor grow operations coming online. Herbs and
lettuce. One old biddy was going on about how the native villagers should
convert the abandoned shipping containers into green houses, but that those
people do not eat lettuce.

Question on the driver exam is a multi guess of what are required items to have
on hand to be allowed to live in AK. The correct answer is the one with duct
tape. All manner of repairs are effectuated with duct tape here. Shoes,
gloves, cars, even the requisite blue tarps are to be repaired in that manner.

I was at the hardware store yesterday searching for a plastic repair glue. I
had not found a usable product at the grocery store. I did find there is much
space dedicated to duct tape in many flavors. Maybe to match your choice of
potato or corn chip? The hardware store was even more elaborate in gaffers
tape. Must have been five foot wide and tall. From multi color electrical
tapes to standard duct, all the way to NASA certified sealing tapes.

there was all manner of hullaballoo about the weather in AK this past summer.
Much blame given to anthropomorphic climate assault. At the moment the region
is suffering a possible record breaking stretch of the very colds. Much
gnashing of tooth and rending of tunic by the populace. I will admit there are
many vehicles with shattered rear windscreens. Must be very uncomfortable to

What just was admitted, after somebody bothered to look at records, is that
there have been 30! stretches of extended periods of very cold (below 263*K for
at least a week) in ANC since 1950. That is like minus temps in F degrees for
longer than a week. The most recent extended stretch was in 2009. Expected
over night temps will be in the -27f range the next two days.

[MBZ] Progress 300D 2.5

2020-01-09 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I have finally been able to stop the process of tearing things up and
welding on the 300D 2.5.   Today I was able to install the new brake
lines.  I have more sheet metal patching to do, but I'm done welding. If
I had Dimitri's skills and tools, i'd weld in patches, but these are
getting glued and screwed, as they are non-structural, and underneath.

Tomorrow I hope to take Wilton's subframe and the wheel carriers to get
powerwashed and press in new bushings.    After that I will do a trial
fitting of the subframe.   Then I will start assembling the subframe.
Not sure what day that will be, but it is supposed to rain for 40 days
and 40 nights, so I can work on the assembly inside.

I reversed, and decided to order MB hoses for the fuel  in and out of
the tank.   Waiting for those and the prior order from CC to show up. CC
sent the prior order to the wrong address, but the right address was
clearly in the email I sent.   Need the hoses before I can put in the
subframe.   Hopefully within a week or 2 the car will be back together.

Well, actually there is one more spot I need to tear out the undercoat
and dig out the rust flakes, but it is relatively easy to get to; just a
complex shape.  Probably a 6" x 8" patch if I had to guess.

I will order new rear calipers next week too, along with the axle boot
tool and boots.

> Curt wrote:

> How does that work?

Anytime there is current flowing, there is voltage drop. The more
current there is, the greater the drop. So for testing, put a
volt meter with one lead on the batter and one on the heater. It
should read zero. Turn on the heater. If the heater is using
power, there will be some number on your meter. What the reading
is will depend on the resistance of the wire (length and gauge)
and the current being drawn by the heater. Since we expect
somewhere between 10 and 100 A, even with 0.5 m of 10 AWG wire
there should be a measurable DC voltage.

> Or rather how do I do it?

First is to be sure the heater works, and measure the voltage drop
across the wire. A single color LED needs about 1.2 V and be
limited to approx 20 mA. If there is 2V or more drop on that
wire, you are all set! A resistor of about 50 ohm will limit the
current of a 2 VDC supply to about 20 mA. The brightness of the
LED will indicate the current draw. No light means no current
draw - either because there is no power or the heater quit or
whatever.

If the voltage drop on the heater power wire is less than 1 VDC,
it will require additional circuitry to make it work...

I can draw it out with pictures, but step one is to get the heater
working and measure the voltage drop on the supply wire.

> I finally realized that a silent solenoid obviously wasn't
> working. An advantage in the solenoid vs a relay.

A relay makes noise too. So I'm not sure what you are saying.

that Win10 can't accommodate. I have Win 10 Enterprise on a Dell 460 which I

My last 240D had a push button to a Ford starter solenoid that
triggered the glow plugs. One time it failed because the wire that fed
the relay dangled on the exhaust manifold and blew the fuse. Thats

How does that work? Or rather how do I do it?
My last 240D had a push button to a Ford starter solenoid that triggered the
glow plugs. One time it failed because the wire that fed the relay dangled on
the exhaust manifold and blew the fuse. Thats when I found out that the light
was fed off the switch, not the solenoid so I didn't realize, at first, that
the solenoid wasn't triggered. I finally realized that a silent solenoid

Well, trying to measure 10mA with a meter designed to measure 400A
is never going to be ultra reliable. Courses for horses, as they say, and
I have a small-jaw clamp-on DC ammeter for that kind of thing. It's rated
at 60A max, and is labeled a mA current clamp. The jaw opening is
something like 1/4".

But you can also loop the wire through the jaw more than once, and thus
multiply the magnetic field by the looping factor. You just divide the number
it's reading by X to get a more accurate answer.

In a car, even a small dome light is 1A or so, and my 400A Fluke is just fine.

12 AWG is safe for 30 A, especially in the open. There will be
voltage drop, but if the wire isn't very long it might be just
fine. 10 AWG is rated for 30 A in a wall filled with insulation.

I have found clamp on DC meters to be finicky for small current.
But it should be just fine for measuring the difference between
"no" and "off"

Measure the voltage drop across the wiring. Battery to heater.
That becomes an ammeter. Personally, I would wire an LED to light
up with the voltage drop caused by the power wire.
Light = current draw. Probably still need a resistor for the
current limit.

Are the cheap ones worth having? Harbor Freight has a couple. I mention them
only because I could run over and get one today.I've got their "better"
multimeter and its been good to me. The very cheap ones aren't worth having but
the $40 one isn't bad.

They have them priced between $45 and $100, the only difference seems to be max
current. I can't see my really needing more than 400A capacity...
Hmm, same brand as the multimeter, might be worth a shot.

Apparently someone had gotten into his computer and collected email addresses

The little research I've done mostly turns up stuff for 5.9 Cummins engines.
Those apparently have something more like a toaster, can use 100+ amps and have
wiring to match the power draw.
The 10hp China made diesel engines have a glowplug thing like you describe.
I've also seen reference to some tractors that have essentially a glowplug with
a screen on it to increase surface area.
Guess I need to pull this one apart and see what its got and if the thing
actually works. I'm also thinking I'll add a wire from the heater back to the
cab with a light so I'll know at least that power is getting to the heater.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Intake heater current draw?

2020-01-09 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
On the old AC loader we had, I took off the intake hose and had a gander
inside.   It was not much different from a block heater, only it glowed
like an electric stove element on High.

probably 20-30 amps.   If the relay is 30A, then probably the heater is 20A

Anybody care to make a wild guess at the current draw for the intake
heater on the ASV?I've been displeased with the coldstart-ability of
the ASV for some time now and one of the things I've been considering
is the intake heater. Its aftermarket to the engine, installed by ASV
but I'm pretty sure the wiring to it now was done by somebody else
later on.Its controlled by a button in the cab which runs to a Hella
4RA 003 510-51 relay which my googling suggests is a 30a relay. The
wiring to it is 10 or 12ga, I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure its too
small for 30a anyway.
Its also worth noting that there is no feedback (ie a light) from the
heater at all, you push the button and hope something is happening.
IIRC the way to test this would be to look at the voltage on the
heater since I don't have an amp gauge capable of testing more than
10a and clamp on DC is unreliable.
Thoughts? I should probably take the intake apart and see if the thing
heats up at all...

Good Catch Curt!   The original article said that only a few were
arrested.  Most got off with a hand slap.  That DOES NOT change the fact
that over 200 fars were arson.

Thats pretty slanted. They're basically saying "People have been
arrested for arson, just not 200." Its not totally incorrect, the
details are just wrong...

Re: [MBZ] I guess Clay can quit worrying about freezing rain...

2020-01-09 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
A couple years ago I made inserts that fit our window casements, I covered
them with plastic and put foam insulating tape on the outside so they're a good
tight fit. We have pretty good windows so they don't make a huge difference but
I was surprised that they make a difference in sound too.
I embedded small magnets in the frames and in the window frames so they hold
themselves in. Each one cost about $0.50 to build and have lasted well. A good
project for those cold evenings.

An artcle on Alaska living listed the items that Alaskans keep on hand. One of
them was masking tape used to patch air leaks in the winter among other uses.
It seems like that might help keep moist air from leaking out through the
defective window seals in your house.

[MBZ] FCP Euro Free Shipping

2020-01-09 Thread dan--- via Mercedes
Placed a couple of orders in the last week for E320 stuff, as I need to get
caught up on the wagons maintenance.

I ordered a set of spark plugs a while back, then it occurred to me that I need
to do engine mounts, something that makes replacing spark plugs a real piece of
cake. Getting them out while each side of the engine is jacked up to replace
the mount puts them in a position where they’re easily accessible. Nice.

So I ordered a set of Lemförder mounts, engine and transmission, yesterday. As
I’m under no duress to get this done, I chose their free shipping option as I
usually do.

I got a notice from UPS that I had a package coming from them today, which
would be the OE K40 relay I bought last week in a closeout sale they had.
Surprise! The mounts must have been in a South Florida warehouse, so they’re
coming today, too.

Guess I need to set some time aside to do this now...

EXACTLY!    And the same with the drug money.  How many congresscritters
can you buy with the trillions of drug money?   At 435 + 100 + 9 million
per year, that is only parking meter change to the cartels.   It is no
accident that the majority of the gress of cons want open borders.  They
are paid well to take that position.
