Re: [MBZ] OT how bad could this be

Last brake job quote I got for a Rolls ran a bit over $8,500 with the
caveat "We won't really know until we get it all opened up and order the
parts." "It could run quite a bit more."

Rolls Royce: If you have to ask what it will cost, you can't afford one...

I better off using screws or pop-rivets? I don't have a spot welder.

And yes it needs to be sheet-metal not insulated duct board.

Re: [MBZ] People are hoarding chickens now

2020-04-13 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Our neighbor next door has 20-30 chickens now. He started several years
ago. I dont' think he's lost any to the foxes, coyotes, skunks, possums,
raccoons, etc. recently because I haven't seen any piles of loose feathers.
They are "free range" (visiting us sometimes), though he supplements there
food with commercial antibiotic, etc, laced feed - and the eggs taste just
like the factory ones from the store. We don't get eggs from him anymore,
being pure food snobs.

Fear of supply-chain disruptions has prompted the DIY spirit and a

Hens need light and warmth, as well as access to good food. I had success with

I wondered.

I just installed a tubular skylight a couple weekends ago, and used quite a bit
of the stuff after screwing all the pieces of the ‘tube” together. Since it’s
in an uninsulated space (attic) anywhere there’s an opening is a spot where
dirt, dust, bugs or other stuff could get in.

And yes, since I was handling sheet metal, I definitely was wearing gloves.

Fear of supply-chain disruptions has prompted the DIY spirit and a
renewed interest in gardening, swamping online seed companies.
Some have brought the same thoughts to bear on the egg shortage:
Actor Tom Holland (Spider-Man) made news when he announced this
week he had adopted three chickens as a source of eggs. And he’s
not alone.

Diez-Canseco isn’t bullish about backyard chickens.

“We don’t think backyard flocks are great for the birds. There’s
a lot of predation,” he said. “But by all means, plant a garden.”

They do, but you can often get them on demand, that is, when you want to watch
them, or if not, you can DVR them in advance to watch later. YouTube TV has a
very good search interface that allows you to search for stuff you like and set
it up to record future shows or series.

Look at their web site for details.

Maybe $1600?

If the repaint was done well and the seals and rubber aren’t shot, it’s

I highly doubt it or I would expect there would be something about it on the
web somewhere. It’s a common weak point you hear people gripe about any time
Rolls Royce comes up, or so it seems. I have no idea what the deal is unless
there’s something really unusual or unique about the brakes. You would think
they would be something designed and engineered for RR as opposed to an off the
shelf solution like the major manufacturers use.

I would be curious to know just for the heck of it. Anyone out there have any
background on RR?

Question would be does reverse still work?

Description of "stopped workin at the store" sounds like B2
failure. When it goes, there's rarely much warning.

Re: [MBZ] sheet metal glue

2020-04-13 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I used self-tapping screws, metal to metal. Cover the screw head and the
overlap joint with the proper tape. Paint over the tape, overpaint at
least an inch onto the metal, with mastic. Tape on the inside is not
needed. Airtight is the goal, must use duct-rated materials.

Youtube for a video if needed. This is non-skilled labor, except the metal
cutting part, that requires some skill.

Now:

Covid-19: 558,526 cases, 61,201 hospitalized, 22,146 deaths*

*The CDC has changed the rules for what is included in the death count, in
order to include more cases (i.e. increase the death count).

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvss/coronavirus/Alert-2-New-ICD-code-introduced-for-COVID-19-deaths.pdf
"However, the rules for coding and selection of the underlying cause of
death are expected to result in COVID-19 being the underlying cause more
often than not."

In other words, it is no longer possible to make a fair comparison between
then and now. Draw your own conclusions.

In the good news department, it appears that the number of new cases and
the number of deaths have leveled off and are starting to drop, so the
worst is now behind us.

The hard part is getting the metal duct-work pieces right.  Once you have
those cut-out with the correct length and tabs so you can screw them
together, the majority of the work is done.  Make it air-tight with the
tape and the mastic.

I completely re-made all the duct-work under my house a few years ago, was
a lot of labor but only a few hundred dollars in material.

Re: [MBZ] Was the world really a better place 30 years ago?

2020-04-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We noticed that Perry Mason is on Amazon Prime, but you’ve got to pay extra for
it. ??? I just grab the episodes off the air when it airs twice a day and
record them on the Tablo. I’ve got a script that runs on my Plex server that
grabs them off the Tablo and imports them into Plex. I think I have nearly five
full seasons at this point (they did 9 seasons @about 30 episodes a season
total.)

There are a bunch of OTA stations here that air old series, like LAFF, GRIT and
DECADES. I think I get Bob Newhart off of DECADES. These have all those old B
series from back in the day.

Re: [MBZ] sheet metal glue

2020-04-13 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I second this, followed by proper duct-rated tape, then covered with
mastic, and then outer layer of insulation. Make a trip to local HVAC
warehouse, they'll set you up with the right stuff. Needs to be duct
rated, so that in a fire it will not produce poisonous gasses and kill you.

Makes sense, you've got a lot more farms around than we do. In the summer I
have a bunch of local producers to choose from, folks with a cooler out in
front of the house. $2/doz seems like the going rate around here. This time of
year the chickens are just starting to really lay again so theres not so much.

Re: [MBZ] People are hoarding chickens now

2020-04-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Commercial eggs are still hard to come by around here (west central FL) but
local producers have all kinds of them. No problem finding/getting them if you
make the effort. We have a lot of rural folks around here that raise chickens
and sell eggs pretty much year ‘round.

I was telling Mitch (MI) the other day about how we’ve got a glut of produce in
the area because the migrant workers can’t pick it. Just south of me is a large
area of tomato growers, so many of them that there are several processing
plants in the area. Because they can’t get the crops to market they’re rotting
in the fields, or if the growers use any sort of mechanized harvesting the
crops are being harvested but just sitting.

A local tomato producer is selling bushel baskets of fresh tomatoes for $5.
Same thing with the blueberry crop that has just come in. I can get a quart of
freshly picked blueberries for about $2 at the growers. Normally, $2 would get
you a pint.

I don’t can vegetables, but if I did I would be stocking up right now. We
bought a boatload of blueberries on Saturday and froze nearly all of them.

see something and then a few days later it'll recommend the very thing I was

Theres still loads of racism around but its much quieter. I'm surprised when
somebody my age rolls out a stupid racist comment and while they'll do it in a
group of white folks I'd bet good money they wouldn't if there was a black guy
around.
I'm not very tolerant of those attitudes, nor sexism. Once in awhile my parents

I'm in south-central Indiana. Abundant supply of eggs at the
supermarkets. $0.97/doz for the non-free-range non-organic factory-farm
eggs last time I was there (middle of last week).

Free-range, cage-free etc. anywhere from near $3/doz to $6 or so.

want you to pay extra for, or so it seems.

If it wasn’t for the wife’s voracious TV consumption, I would go with the OTA

Re: [MBZ] Was the world really a better place 30 years ago?

2020-04-13 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
 Edited shorter.

The "shooting ratio" is the amount of stuff shot divided by the amount of stuff
that actually makes it into the program. Back in the days of film a 10:1
shooting ratio was the high side of acceptable. Today since the "footage" is
much cheaper 20:1 is pretty common. Television is usually tighter because the
shooting schedule is shorter.

Re: [MBZ] Was the world really a better place 30 years ago?

2020-04-13 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Yup, commercial rates haven't risen anywhere near the rate of inflation, the
money for those shows has to come from somewhere.
I know, "I paid for cable" great, that pays the delivery service, it doesn't
pay the network, or the local station. It doesn't pay for the news or the
weather, that all gets paid for from ad revenue.
We've all got to pay somewhere or the stuff won't get made. I go through this a
lot on the Youtube subreddit, people don't understand that ads pay for the
things on the internet that are "free".

About 15 years ago I had about 95% of M*A*S*H recorded off the air on VHS.
Somewhere in the middle of doing that, I realized the plot was there but a
lot of the gags were missing. Like one episode where somebody put soot in
the eyecups of Col Potter's binoculars and turned him into a racoon. I'm
watching the ending credits, see Potter and O'Reilly in the jeep with
Potter's black eyes, and realized that scene didn't exist in the show I'd
recorded, but I remembered it from the first time I saw it in the 1970s.

Then my parents started giving me M*A*S*H DVDs for presents, and I noticed
my tapes were 22+ minutes long while the DVDs were 25+ minutes. So in 30
years, commercials had increased from about 5 1/2 minutes to 8 1/2
minutes.

[MBZ] OT well we just had an exciting morning

2020-04-13 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Strong line of tstorms moved through awhile ago, some tornadoes not too
far away.  Lot of rain here at the vast estate but not too much wind so
fairly lucky.  Power stayed on so that is good.  A little airport west
of here got hit by a tornado and tore up hangers and planes, some houses
up north a little ways got hit. The cell that tore up the airport moved
a bit south of me down toward the beach, some reports it might have gone
over Wadmalaw and Seabrook just a few miles away but I did not hear or
see any evidence here.

Re: [MBZ] People are hoarding chickens now

2020-04-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Chickens roam Ybor City, the neighborhood on the east side of Tampa that was
settled by the Cubans and had many a cigar factory in the day. They’re a hotly
contested topic on a regular basis as gentrification has started and the new
residents aren’t terribly keen about the noise and mess.
