Re: [MBZ] OT: Sunlight calculator

2020-08-27 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Go to Home Depot or any hardware store.
Buy a bundle of 2 ft long grade stakes.
Drive a grade stake in each location you think you want to mount the solar
panel.
Starting at sunrise.
Every two hours, measure the shadow length of the grade stake, and the
angle.
Enter the reading on a notepad for use later using a pictograph drawing for
each stake.
At sunset, compare the day's readings.

The path with greatest sun exposure will have the shortest shadows.

At sunset

Direct observation is a great way to do it. You do not, however, have to
sit in the yard the entire day. You should already have some idea of how
the shadows progress across your yard throughout the year, but there are
ways to quickly show you that information in a readily understandable

What you need is a chart like the attached picture (without the
background blue and green) printed on a clear transparency. Then you go
around your yard, face south, and look through the transparency to see at
each spot what the objects which will block the sun are at that location.

I totally agree about the purple beans. They age quickly to become stringy.

Q: I need a specific kind of wheeled chair thingy, where can I get one?
A: We sell all kinds of wheels and structural steel, you can weld up exactly
what you need.
Q: Great. Where are the detailed instructions?

Umm, that _is_ the problem. If flanging together some of the many Maker-bait
bits that are currently out there is not something you already know how to do,
or want to teach yourself first, then perhaps that is _not_ the right way to go.

I think there _are_ tutorial courses/products that would help you to get there.
But I have not investigated this myself.

Basically what you want is a watt-hour meter hooked to a solar cell of a known
size.
That will integrate the power available to the test cell, and give you a single
number,
which you can scale by the ratio of test cell size to final cell array size.

I don't know where to get one that works on 12V DC, though. (I have not
looked.)
This would be a Kill-A-Watt device for DC battery systems, rather than
household AC.

We are getting great harvests of Aji Amarillo and Thai peppers, as well as
orient wonder beans - like green beans, only 1 - 2 feet long. Okra is doing
great as well. Just cooked up a combination of green beans abd okra in
harissa sauce - very yummy!

Use a 12V solar panel big enough to run the VDO Quartz clock from
an MB instrument cluster. (W114 or newer.) No battery, clock runs
when there's sunlight, doesn't when not. There's your data logger.
Just remember to read it every 12 hours so you don't drop a stitch.
You might need to mask off part of the array, and/or use a bleed resistor,
so that the clock does not run in indirect sunlight.

[MBZ] Fakebook

2020-08-27 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
There is a kid on various fakebook groups who supposedly has some sort
of business making hood stacks for morons who want to cut a hole in
their hood.  I think he also sells used parts.  Lems or something like
that.  I noticed a post on some group about parting out a 240D.  Pics
looked like the car was fairly straight and rust free, looked decent.  I
asked him why it was being parted out, here is his response:

"Just too many little issues to make it worth the while. I also really
want to tear an entire car down and learn about everything. I also need
parts for my 81 240D with a manual trans and good running 616. It needs
a fender, door, seats, misc trim and a few more."

He can't find a rusty or wrecked car to tear down to "learn about
everything"?

Re: [MBZ] cookbook

2020-08-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've found that the purple beans need to be picked when they're quite small,
they get woody quick. This year I grew yellow beans, I can't remember the
variety and one variety of green beans I also can't recall. The green beans are
terrible for getting woody, probably made worse by the drought here. The yellow
beans are much more tolerant, I can let them get quite large before they're
inedible.
We grew beans all over the place this year, in the garden, in the flowers,
around the edge of the house. Angie was skeptical at first but I think she's
come to accept my "grow food everywhere" mantra.
The front of our house has an asparagus patch on one side and Angie's flower
garden on the other. I snuck beans into every open inch of her flower garden.
Her flowers have never looked so good. ;)

Re: [MBZ] OT; GAS HOT WATER HEATER

2020-08-27 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
yeah a 5 and 10 yr WH (or ever how many years) is the same unit with a
longer warranty you pay for, so there's that.

As far as on-demand, I have seen these little tanks like 2-3 gallons you
can put at the point of use which will allow you to do hand washing,
dish rinsing, etc. without triggering the main unit and giving you a bit
of pad to use for those tasks.  Kinda makes sense even with a big unit
that might be some distance from the point of use.  They aren't much and
can sit under a sink and plug into a 110V circuit like your disposer or
dishwasher, basically a big hot pot there with hot water when you want
it Right Now.

At the time I asked a few questions here, and someone said that there's
really no difference in build quality between the 6 or 10 year
warranty. They just charge more to offset their risk on having to pay
out. You can probably find the thread in archives or your old list

I would not do the on-demand (assuming that means tankless) if your
house didn't orginally have that. They can be OK if your demand pattern
is long showers or filling large baths. For handwashing, etc. you end up
running a lot more water down the drain before you get hot water at the
faucet. And if your clothes washer is like my LG Front Loader, it fills
in a series of short on/off cycles and you'll never get hot water from a
tankless heater that way. They also can have different venting and gas
supply requirements from the typical tank heater.

[MBZ] The 2.5 turbo I accidentally bought from Copart

2020-08-27 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Picked it up today. It’s a little on the turd side but has potential. Body
decent with no rust. Looks like somebody bypassed the vacuum control stuff for
turbo and put in a regular waste gate. Does start and sounds OK but they
somehow got it idling up way too high. Non of the gauges were working so I
messed with the fuse and got the oil pressure gauge working. Fuel and temp
gauge do not appear to work. Feels like it might have a slight miss in it which
might be why they jacked up the idle. Engine sounds fine though. Does smoke as
in gray diesel smoke. Appears to have a new radiator in it but the expansion
tank appears to be dry. It is possible they didn’t get it filled up properly
when doing the radiator swap. I am betting on blown head gasket though. I will
hook my vacuum filler up to it and just fill it with plain water and see what
it does. Not going to run it though until I have a working temp gauge. Also
found a trunk full of spare parts such as several ACC PBUs, spare instrumental
cluster, a new timing chain, filters etc.

Put them in a bowl, drizzle olive oil, then add some salt pepper
chopped/crushed garlic (and maybe some garlic powder) and coat them well
with that.  Add any other spices you might like but that is pretty
good.  Throw on a grill with a grill pan/grate so they don't fall
through, get them a little blistered and cooked soft, then eat them as a
snack or horse doover or side with your meal. They are very mild (you
might occasionally get a surprise!) and quite tasty.  Good finger food.

Gonna grill up my batch tonight with some green beans and okra too (use
the same marinade)! Maybe a piece of fish.  It's quick and easy, esp in
the summer if you cook outside on the grill.  I have a grill unit on my
cooktop so mostly just do it there, easier than running outside to do it.

Bradford White used to be considered a bit higher quality than AO Smith,
my uncle screwed BWs together for a good many years here in Michigan. Ask
for the country of origin, if it's still USA, the BW name itself might be
worth something extra, if it's Mexico, who knows, but a Mexican BW
probably beats a Chinese whatever by a good margin, if we're importing
full size water heaters from China now.

Besides that air cleaner on the Weber being just wrong, there might be
trouble in hot temperatures. Needs to be able to draw cool air from the

[MBZ] 280 C on BAT with sunroof

2020-08-27 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Arizona car in an attractive silver/blue. Seems like an honest car,
whatever that means. Has some issues (e.g., missing door pockets) and
probably won't break $10K.
