As it was sitting in our Big Room for a protracted time, I did a lot of maintenance on it besides trying to track down the phantom current drain and secure the cooling system. Part of the maintenance was a new Mann filter and ATF. I'd guess it has about 250 miles on the new ATF and filter. I traded a nice ten-speed Schwinn for a Super Beetle. I'd paid $100 for the bike, my brother had paid the same for the car, and shortly after that he wanted a bike and I needed a car, so we traded. It was an amazing car for what it was. I got a year or two of driving out of it before the brakes rusted out. Once it had no brakes, we used it as a woods car (in Wisconsin) and drove it around on logging roads for another couple years. You can't believe what a builder friend of mine told me about houses he was remodeling over there. Some rich dude buys it, his wife immediately wants it completely redone to suit her interests. So they would go in and take out EVERYTHING down to the studs -- granite kitchens with very high-end appliances and cabinetry, stone bathrooms, marble, granite, etc with fancy fixtures, fancy exotic wood flooring, all that stuff. He said he took his son 3000ft2 of solid cherry flooring that was like 2yo in this one house that had been redone then, last time it flipped. He had his guys salvage it. He lived over there too but was kind of a basic midwest guy, had been a Treasury agent doing forensic accounting, then did consulting work on that after he retired and made some good money, not really into a lot of fancy stuff, so he was astounded too. He usually let his crew take stuff and use it or sell it as a perk, unless he knew someone who wanted something (me! me!). I went over yesterday in the $720ML500 (Benz Content!) to drop off some recycling and a bag of trash at the Kiawah Island Community Association place, they have a big recycle bin and a small dumpster there that is about a 6ft cube with a door on the side to put trash in. I opened it to put my bag of trash in it and there was a box sitting right there, looked new, a Sony stereo receiver. I opened it up and it looked like it had never been used, the remote was still in a plastic bag, the unit had been taken out of a foam sleeve but the cord was still wrapped with a wire tie. I threw it in the ML500 (Benz Content!) and brought it home. I have not hooked it up to speakers yet, I have some of those I got for nothing from a garage sale. I need to buy one of those little bluetooth dongles and can use it for a streaming system, play music off the internets or my phone or iPad. I can't believe someone just chucked it in a dumpster. It's probably like a $150 unit, so not a high-end thing, but still... -- --FT ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Folks, We had a vw repair shop that started in the same space as my print shop ... the print shop was the name of the printing and the bug shop was the name of the vw operation We ran that from about 1977 to probably the mid 90s but we were done with air cooled stuff probably by 1990. I drove nothing but VW (busses mostly) from about 1970 to probably 1985 ... then switched to Peugeot then switched to Benz ... and I think I may be getting close to over 123 Benz ... I like the sprinter if I can keep up with the rust on mine Here is a link http://www.javaphoto.com/VWpage.html I thought there were photos, but they are gone as are the cars! Someone has been inhaling aromatics of some sort. Their prices for the Mac Pros are pretty silly, especially the 5,1 as it’s a single processor model. Re: [MBZ] VW Content: Isn't Poos cute?
I haven’t personally owned any air-cooled VW’s, but my Dad owned quite a few. I remember a 1967 Baja Bug with stinger exhaust that would backfire LOUDLY between shifts which scared me as a kid. Years later, he bought a 1973 Beetle for $500 that had rusted floors, and a 1964 Karmann Ghia that was hit in the front end that he bought as a project. I helped him cut the damaged nose off and hold the junkyard sheet metal in place so he could weld it. I also remember starting it with a ratchet which was pretty cool! We drove it around the neighborhood with no fenders as it sipped fuel from a coffee can just to see what it could do. My oldest Sister had a 1962 VW Ragtop Bus, boy would I LOVE to have that one now! I have TSA precheck and the last several trips the line just merges into the regular line. In other words a complete waste of precheck. When they check your ID they tell you to just tell the worker at the scanner belt that you are precheck and they will not send you thru the body scanner deal and you can leave your shoes on. Still make you take computer out of bag which you are not supposed to have to do with precheck. I asked them about why the precheck line has been closed and they said short staffed due to covid. On to Dallas. Seated in first class for this leg and they come over the intercom asking if anybody owned a backpack that was left at the gate, or around the gate, or plane or something. Nobody said it was theirs so they started walking it up and down the isle. Still nobody claimed it. The whole time I’m thinking they need to get that off the plane because it may contain a bomb or something. Yep, or SHMBO can’t put the phone down do you can see at night. Speaking of night driving I am amazed at the number of people now days that drive with their brights on all the time and won’t dim them. I am also amazed at even on low beams most modern cars seem to blind oncoming vehicles. I think people now days need lights so bright it’s like daylight otherwise they get scared. It seems like there are more and more mandates happening yet supposedly the cases are going up. Doesn’t seem to add up. I do know that Tulsa recently added to their mandate where health department can fine a business or shut them down for not properly enforcing the masks. Here I am sitting in a mask in the middle of DFW about to start a sneezing fit. Seems to always happen when I have been wearing one for an hour or more at a time. “Automatic Stickshift”. Never had one, fixed a lot of them for friends that did. Contact on the bottom of the shifter would often get cruddy and no shift results. I also hated how if you rested your hand on the shifter and pushed it down, the contact would open and it would engage the clutch and the engine would freewheel. -D > On Dec 7, 2020, at 10:28 AM, Mitch Haley via Mercedes > wrote: > > Was that automatic the one with the manual transmission and automatic clutch > (touch the shifter and it declutches)? > > On 2020-12-07 10:25, Bob Rentfro via Mercedes wrote: >> I feel most of us cut out teeth on Beetles. I never had an aircooled VW but I've been around them a little. My mother had a Type III fastback when I was born. A friend in high school got into dune buggies but never managed to get one roadworthy. Another friend I worked with in the '90s drives a campmobile. There's a guy around the corner that specializes in 'em. I keep my eye out for a Type III, either wagon or fastback. They're super cool but very rare these days. -Curt On Monday, December 7, 2020, 10:26:22 AM EST, Bob Rentfro via Mercedes wrote: I feel most of us cut out teeth on Beetles. I'm starting to doubt that masks really prevent spread, it seems more likely that summertime, or maybe summertime behaviors prevent spread. The places I go, which admittedly isn't all that often, people seem to be pretty much wearing them. You see a few not wearing or with their nose hanging out but they're definitely in the minority, yet the number of cases keeps rising. I'm going up tomorrow to look at this car, probably buy it. Girl child is going to give me her 124 E320 in swap so I will haul that back and sell it, should come out OK on the deal and keep her mobile. She went and looked at it Saturday, thought it was pretty nice, left the guy a deposit to hold it. She said it was a bit bouncy but not too bad so the spheres are probably not completely shot. Re: [MBZ] Flying today
Flew back from Indianapolis on SWA yesterday and the plane was maybe 1/3 -1/2 full. A flight to Baltimore boarded just before us and there were only 40 people on it. Mask wearing was complied with for the most part, I didn’t see anyone trying to “cheat” as we had on previous flights. Had a guy sitting in front of us on a previous flight who kept taking his mask off. Ratted him out once, after that the cabin crew kept an eye on him and nailed him a second time. They pretty much told the guy that if they caught him with his mask off again that he would be banned from SWA. -D > On Dec 7, 2020, at 9:46 AM, Bob Rentfro via Mercedes > wrote: > > We were flying back from Texas yesterday and I noticed the very same thing. We were flying back from Texas yesterday and I noticed the very same thing. I think I was one of about maybe a dozen people with their shade up. And, the flight from Dallas to Phoenix was FULL. [MBZ] Flying today
I am currently on a flight today and have noticed something that I have actually been noticing for a while. It seems like 90-95% of people on planes these days keep the window shade closed. I guess they would rather stare at their electronic boxes that look at the passing scenery as they fly over. I flu frequently but I still like to look out the window most of the whole trip. I remember years ago when it was rare to see a window shade down. Another big annoyance. Re: [MBZ] VW Content: Isn't Poos cute?
Hmm. Beetles I had: 1966 sedan 1968 convertible 1971 convertible 1959 barn door van 1971 Fastback At least those are the ones I recall. There may have been others. Rebuilt a few engines, did a fair amount of floor pan and rocker replacements. The 1959 barn door van was my all time favorite. Paid $200 for it in 1977. Can’t imagine what it would be worth today. -D > On Dec 6, 2020, at 11:09 PM, archer75--- via Mercedes > wrote: > > On Sun, 6 Dec 2020 10:29:50 -0800 > Jim Cathey via Mercedes wrote: > >>> Wonder how many of us have air cooled engine experience? >> >> >> My parents had a beetle.
