Can you find a lowballed E350 with 7 speed and bad balance shafts, swap

So here's the thing.  I have this sorta trashed 03E500 sitting here that
has the same engine but a 722.6.  I am guessing that swapping in the
722.6 would be all manner of electronic hell given the transmission
control units are part of the whole car electronics system, but that
would be the way to do it and be done with the "upgraded" transmission

I'm doing some digging, it might be possible to find a used
TCM(VGS)/conductor plate and use my clone XENTRY/DAS to reprogram it to
match the car.  It MIGHT be possible to take the codes out of the old
unit and transfer them to a "new" one of the same flavor.  Apparently MB
decided to make anti-theft part of the TCM too, so every part has to be
speaking the same coded language to every other part in the system or
the car no workie.  Go figure.

My 1979 S class has a rubber trunk mat.
My 1977 Saab was carpeted. One time in the 1980s, when we still had a
lot of pheasants in Michigan (but never saw any wild turkeys), a
cockfight crash landed in the road in front of me. The loser could
barely stand up, but wasn't bloody, just exhausted. Winner wanted to
kill him.
I grabbed the loser, threw him in the trunk, and drove him to the farm
about 4 miles away. SOB crapped on my carpet.

I am not pleased with the honda quality either. Had Acura and honda sedans
that were buzzy. Strict need to service engines or they fail. I was looking
at the Pilot in 2019. It was the right size for my needs, but quality, again,
was just not there. Pricy and not any better than a 1986 Astro van

Put the scanner on it, trans was showing 4 codes which I cleared, then drove
the car. It is in limp mode but otherwise ran and drove fine. Scanned it again
and showed the TCM (called a VGS or something) was uncommunicative. This is a
722.9 and is quite a bit more complicated than the 722.6, the TCM is part of
the conductor plate. I need to learn about it.

Guy was driving on the interstate when it went into limp mode, no warning. I
guess it could be the TCM fried or maybe some other electrical aspect. I will
find out. Transmission shop said it needed a whole new trans and some other
stuff at $7k.

I talked him and management out of wasting time and a decent car by parting it
out.

Yes.

I can probably drive it home (30mph at 5000rpm!), it's not too far away,
or load it on my trailer and drag it home, but I have to unload a load
of compost that is sitting in it (the trailer not the car) now

Trucks are one of those vehicles where when you need one, there isn't a
great substitute. Cheap utility trailers don't take much weight, it's an
extra registration to pay for, and most modern cars have limited (or
zero) towing capacity.

Sure you can generally get along without one, and they aren't super
practical as a daily driver, but if you can only have one vehicle and
you sometimes need a truck, you get a truck.

Just one example, where I live I have to take my trash and recycling to
a county dumpster 5 miles away. I'm not going to want a week's worth of
stinky trash bags in my back seat, and hooking up a trailer for that is
kind of a nuisance. So I use the truck for that. And whenever I need to
haul something large, dirty, or heavy--which ends up being at least once
a month or so--it's convenient.

Trucks are just stupid expensive. Have been for years.

#1 boy is interested in the work truck he is using. Company has contracted
with decline in oil patch work, so there are many vehicles taking up space. He
uses a ten year old crew cab that was formerly supervisor/manager ride, so it
is well appointed. Diesel with big miles. Not been thrashed, but also not
getting maintained either. The ask is over $20k. Pretty much the same as
getting a 15-20 year old smaller PU of the nissan or toyota flavor. US iron is
pretty thrashed and still expensive from private or used lot.

One of those weird memory snapshots of a moment from my childhood is

Ultimately I think the future of these new EVs will be a hard push into
leasing, not owning.

I just watched an Adam Carolla podcast with Henrik Fisker. Fisker is
coming out with an electric SUV they are calling Ocean.

https://www.fiskerinc.com/

Maybe it's a gimmick, but they are planning to offer a lease where you
make a down payment and get a montly payment but you can return it
whenever you want with a 30,000 mile yearly limit. So you don't have
anxiety about being stuck with a lease you can't afford if your
circumstances change. From their website, "Currently, we do not offer a
purchase option at any point during your lease." The lease includes
insurance and all servicing.

With EVs that are completely computer controlled, there's not going to
be a lot a home DIY mechanic can do. Why own the car at that point? At
least that's what they think is going to be appealing.

If all cars are leased, they can be refurbed or recycled when they are
returned, and manufacturers are no longer on the hook to maintain a
parts supply for decades. Mercedes won't need to worry about spare
hyperscreens.

Last Chevy I owned was an early '90s era Blazer (the SUV version of the
S-10). It was a RWD version. Over the years we owned it, it had some
annoying electical gremlins but no major mechanical problems.

Last Ford I owned was an F150 crew cab it was about a 2001 model. Also a
RWD model. Zero issues with it, though a friend had a slightly older
Expedition and he had repeated coil pack failures.

No experience with anything newer than my '04 Frontier, which I bought
with insurance money when the F150 was totaled. It is very true that
trucks depreciate less and prices can be surprisingly high even on older
ones. Toyotas and Nissans hold value better than domestics but these
days I'm not sure they are objectively better vehicles.

I test drove a Ford Ranger when I bought the Nissan, and I would have
probably gone with it except it had a standard cab and the Nissan had
the King cab. At the time my kids were small and they thought the jump
seats were fun. Fast forward 10 years and they weren't so useful but
it's still nice to have that area behind the seats for groceries, etc.

You can save money, weight, and complexity by avoiding 4WD if you don't
need it. I'd say a Ranger would be worth a look.

One of the days I hunted last season I took Angie's Golf. The deer considered
how upset she would be with me and didn't show up.
Actually a car would be kind of an advantage in the low deck height to lift the

through it. Last year I went every time it snowed because I was worried that if
we got 2 storms in a row I wouldn't be able to get in with the truck...

Go out and drive them all, you'll quickly find the ones you like and the ones
you don't. Theres a surprising difference between each considering the sameness
of looks.

I don't remember what I didn't like about the Ford, I think it just seemed
bland to me. I suspect that's why its the most popular truck, theres nothing
particularly loveable about it but nobody really dislikes it. I was kind of
bored.
The Nissan Titan I found very exciting and fun to drive. I didn't fit well in
the Frontier although I could never articulate why, I liked the Xterra fine and
they were basically the same truck.
I've not driven a current Tundra but I liked the 2006 model we drove other than
it was way overpriced, like priced the same as the Dodge we bought that was 4
years newer.
Angie hated the headrests in the Chevy so that one was out. The seats are
probably different now.

Our Dodge got its limits pushed this year, especially when hunting buddy Zach
took his Colorado in the snow and got stuck. To be fair the Colorado would
probably have done fine if it didn't have baloney skin tires. With its
aggressive tires, limited slip rear end and my willingness to stand on the loud

Do you have the new-type Ranger or the older 2011 and earlier?
We had a 2003 Ranger that was a really good woods truck. I remember once coming
out of camp dragging the trailer hitch to the point it looked like we were
leaving 3 wheel ruts. Another time I hauled firewood loaded to the roofline, I
can't believe I didn't break a spring that time.
It was a terrible highway truck, bouncy and unpleasant for long highway trips.
Fuel economy was lackluster, it struggled to reach 19mpg.
Worst rusting truck I've ever had...

Toyotas are made from gold. I'm half tempted to get a Tundra to replace my
aging Dodge and plan on buying a new one every 5 years when I sell the old one
for 80% of its purchase price...
When we bought our Dodge I test drove a couple Tacomas, my one piece of advice
is that if he wants a manual transmission avoid the 6spd which is the worst
manual transmission I've ever driven. It was like driving a 1950s vintage 5 ton
truck. Huge shift throws, mushy shifter feeling.
I find the Tacoma very uncomfortable to ride in and hugely overpriced. With a
Dodge/Ford/Chevy/Nissan full size you get way more truck for nearly the same
price.

Go and look at them first. When we were shopping for a pickup, we wanted
low cost, only one row of seats, and space behind the seat. The Dodge and
Chevys had NO space behind the seat, the Ford has lots. I carry tie downs
ratchet straps, tools, oil, etc. back there.
Make a list of priorities, then go shopping to see what meets the most of
them.

From my initial research, which is barely conclusive, the Ford Ranger appears
to be a decent choice. I’m not sold on the Toyota or Nissan, they were just my

Start looking at F150 Fords. If you are looking for used ones, start at
about 2011 and look for the 5 litre V8. Avoid the turbos. Avoid the
earlier model which had engine issues. If you go newer than 2014 it will
have the aluminum body. I think I prefer the steel body. Mine is 2013.
I would suggest the only advantage to the Toyota is resale value might
be higher if you don't keep it until it falls apart.

Bob says:

>Holy crap used Toyota Tacoma‘s are expensive

They command a king's ransom, as do most pickup trucks right now. Small trucks
are in great demand. So are 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton. Shop, shop, and shop. Expand
your search and be ready to pounce at a moment's notice. There are occasional
deals, but they disappear VERY quickly. Consider alternative makes, such as
Ford Ranger, GMC Canyon, Honda Ridgeline, and Nissan Frontier. Do the due
diligence required to understand the potential failure points of each
particular make and model and what your tolerance for repairs is.

Also consider the "work truck" models may be less. Extended cabs, short beds,
and car like amenities make the vehicle more desirable to the general public. A
"work truck" Tundra would not be as desirable as a four door, so will be priced
less. I personally would be looking for one of those, when the time comes, for
the 8' bed and the capacity to properly pull a loaded car trailer.

That said, a relationship with a dealer that will buy a auction for you, would
be a plus. I'm not sure there is that big of a discount at auction though.

Your future son in laws best bet may be to buy new, depending on how old a used
truck he is looking at.

Why?

I will say that the Nissan Frontier is just as pricey. For grins I looked at
Ford Rangers and saw a few that were pretty decent for reasonable money.

You must be psychic.

I started looking at them just the other day as a retirement vehicle. And yes,
they’re stupid expensive.

If you’re shopping on price, you’ll want to go for the basic four cylinder,
standard cab 2WD model, of which I found very few. Even ones from the early
2000s are bringing big bucks with reasonable mileage. Add the larger cab and
4WD and he price goes up exponentially.

I had forgotten about the Nissan equivalent, which would be just as good for
me, so I’m going to start researching those as well.
