You can mix it with something else to rid the itch.
Last year I bought a pair of wool longjohns. They're actually only like 40%
wool and 60% cotton, actually I just looked it up and its more complicated:
https://coldpruf.com/products/authentic-wool-plus-mens-crew/
Anyway they're amazing. I wore them all through hunting season, they're warm,
they wick the moisture away from your skin and they don't stink. They're more
expensive than polypropylene but absolutely worth it.
The only complaint I have is that they seem to run a little large. Either that
or I'm shrinking, see my previous post about the gym.

paper bags with the votive candles) placed along the trails every 20-30 feet or
so by the park rangers.

My standard getup was jogging pants, a t-shirt, all covered with an Army field
coat that went down to my knees. It was also referred to as my “Captain
Kangaroo” coat because it had large, square pockets on the front that were
ideal for holding bottles of cold, locally produced adult beverages, usually
from Sprecker. As I would push along the bottles would jingle in my pockets,
scaring off the local wildlife but alerting fellow skiiers that I possessed
libations. Every quarter mile or so there would be a park bench, which we would
sit on to take a short rest and consume said libations.

This is one of the examples of the excellent quality of life that exists in WI.

Good excuse to get on the treadmill/elliptical/weight bench etc.  The
difference between looking like a slob, and being dead can be highly
motivating. Dr. "If you don't lose weight and exercise you're not going to look

On that note, it's time to get on the NordicTrac.

There are splatters of stuff everywhere, even worse on driver side
carpet on the tunnel.  I don't even know what all that crap is, it is
more black than brown, it is like used diesel oil was slinging off a fan
or something.  I really have no idea how it was done, or what it is, it
is not like just a spill.  It's kind of a minimal issue at this time but
at some point I'll want to clean it.

Definitely one of the things I do on a “new to me” car maintenance list. All
fluids get replaced. That way I have a point of reference.

For some reason I was thinking I saw 60k for differential oil, but I’m not 100%

It looks more of a gold color than what I think of as beige.  It
actually is kinda nice all cleaned up, which surprised me when I stood
back and looked at it.  the interior is kinda bland but I guess some
people like a lighter color that isn't white.

[MBZ] SC Covid shots

2021-01-15 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

The local Medical University of SC where I am in the trial

--FT

Dear MUSC Health Patients and Families,

MUSC Health
 remains
focused on the safety of our community, patients, families and care team
members. With COVID-19 infection rates rising, we want to continue to
provide you with information and updates about services, including
COVID-19 testing and vaccinations. Here is this week's update.

   COVID-19 Vaccination

This week, we saw major changes to our vaccine administration, which has
now expanded to health care workers in Phase 1a and community members 70
years of age and above. This has been a huge coordinated effort across
many areas within MUSC to ensure the accurate, safe and timely
administration of vaccines to our community, and I want to thank our
incredible team working tirelessly on this massive undertaking to
engage, inform and schedule vaccine appointments. View information and a
video with directions on how you can schedule a vaccination appointment.

To date, MUSC Health has received many shipments of the COVID-19
vaccine and we continue to vaccinate care team members and community
members over the age of 70. As of January 14, MUSC Health has delivered
17,680 first doses and 5,110 second doses of the vaccine.

Our plan is to continue vaccinating as many people as possible based on
our vaccine supplies. We still do not have an exact timeline for when
the vaccine will be more widely available. We're working with public
health authorities on the prioritization of the vaccine. There is still
no need to contact your provider about scheduling a vaccine appointment.
We will alert patients through MUSC Health MyChart as soon as vaccines
are available. Please visit our MUSC Health Information on the COVID-19
Vaccine
 webpage
for updates and information about eligibility and scheduling.

We’re using a centralized registration system by CDR Maguire. They’re doing it
at the state level across the country as well. We’ve been told that the state
is going to take over all aspects of the distribution and vaccination in the
next week or two and establish one site in the county to handle everything,
both testing and vaccinations. This will be good for us, as we’ve been handling
everything within the county across multiple sites since this started. It’s
been a logistical and staffing nightmare for us.

Re: [MBZ] OT Joke - What Your Husband Needs

2021-01-15 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

Reminds me of a "husband-wife" joke I heard the other day:

So my friend Rocky swung by the house and caught me as I was getting
ready to leave to get a few things at the supermarket. He wanted to
talk so I told him to hop in with me.

Now Rocky is blessed with a cheerful disposition and cursed with the
face of a man that has just been released from two decades of prison
hard time even though he probably doesn't have a parking ticket. In a
way he reminds me of Danny Trejo, the actor that specialized in
slasher films and plays convicts. He's also pretty big.

Anyway, we were entering the supermarket but were well clear of it. I
had just donned my mask and Rocky was fishing his out when some Karen
snapped at him that he had better get his mask on.

Rocky is generally pretty fast on the uptake. He's kind and cheerful
but doesn't take a whole lot of shit. He's fast but I was faster.

"Lady, that my WIFE you're talking to," I snapped. You better give the
love of my life an apology before she bitch slaps you across the
parking lot!"

Her look of confusion and fear was something to behold. She was
looking at an angry 70 year old man and a man of about 45 years old
that looked like he had just been released from Sing Sing that was
supposed to be his wife. She didn't know what to do so she went
straight to woman's default.

She instantly turned on the water works and started blubbering out an
apology. "I didn't know he's your wife," she sobbed.

"Well, you knew she's somebody's wife," I shot back. "You owe my wife
an apology!"

She blubbered out a quick apology and fled.

I looked at Rocky who was beet red. He looked at me and stuttered,
"I'm your WIFE? I ought to beat the hell out of you for that little
stunt!" Then he settled down a bit. He shook his head sadly, laughed
and said told me I was unfit to be taken out in public.

What a wonderful compliment!

Locally they are vaccinating those aged 70+ currently, who have
accounted for 86% of fatalities. The state set up a website where you
can register. Not sure of the exact process but somehow that is fed back
to the county health departments who are in charge of the actual
vaccinations. Here, some vaccinations are performed at the hospital and
some at a newly-outfitted vaccination clinic. Sounds like it will be a
while before they are available at any local pharmacy like the flu shots
are.

Yes it is also a lot faster to use xc poles with roller blades - like
insanely fast. Put plastic tip covers and some duct tape on the ends. You
can even buy skis with wheels if you want and wear the xc skate boots.

I worked the front desk at Sun Valley for a season. Some of the best
memories are skiing the golf course alone on skate skis after work under a
big moon. There is an XC trail on the course in winter. Then that little
time in Spring where it melts in the day and freezes at night and you can
skate anywhere the next morning - on trail or off.

Re: [MBZ] NC Covid shots

2021-01-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We had a groomed cross country ski course at a state park just a few miles away
form our home in WI. On Friday nights they had “candlelight skiing”, which had
a bonfire at the parking area for the non-participants and luminaries (? -
paper bags with the votive candles) placed along the trails every 20-30 feet or
so by the park rangers.

Few people who haven’t done it don’t understand how difficult and physical
cross country skiing is. I took it up when we lived in WI, and I will say that
it's right up there with workouts like spinning - and that’s when you’re on
level ground!

The first time I tried it I was appropriately bundled for the weather, with a
Carhart snowmobile suit and such. Within a short time I had stripped that off
and was in my street clothes for the remainder of the run.

Good excuse to get on the treadmill/elliptical/weight bench etc. The
difference between looking like a slob, and being dead can be highly
motivating. Dr. "If you don't lose weight and exercise you're not going to look
good." Dr. " If you get lose sixty pounds and get in better aerobic condition,

On that note, it's time to get on the NordicTrac.

Re: [MBZ] NC Covid shots

2021-01-15 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I talked to my MD/PhD buddy this morning who was involved in setting up
the AZ trial.  He was in the first tranche of those dosed, turns out he
got the placebo.  He said:

   Placebo here was saline.
In the earlier UK trial, they used the non- COVID virus. The
antibody test u took may not have picked up the vaccine antibodies.
I know of one local person in the trial who had a negative antibody
test and had gotten active AZ vaccine in the trial. He found out
   after he was unblinded.

As far as my positive rxn to the doses but no positive antibody tests:

The vaccine and the virus can trigger different antibody profiles
and these tests are not particularly sensitive and results vary over
   time from exposure

So it is then likely that I got the actual dose since the antibody test
is not to be trusted.  The trial was 2/3 got the real dose (which is
encouraging), if I got a rxn, even without a positive antibody test, I
am thinking that increases the likelihood to much greater than 2/3 that
I got it.  I am feeling better about resuming normal programming now.

Also, once a vax is generally available (or to me due to age group or
whatever):

When you can make an appointment for an approved vaccine, they will
   unblind you at MUSC

In some areas, yes. Pinellas and Pasco counties (west and north of Tampa) have
large numbers of retirees. Hillsborough County, which is Tampa, has far lower
numbers. One of the issues is people from adjoining counties attempting to
register for vaccinations here. They’ve gotten pissy when they’re turned down
as the system looks at their address to determine eligibility.

My mother in law registered in Hillsborough County because Pasco’s efforts were
a cluster. I told her she would get turned down when her application came up on
the list, but of course she didn’t want to hear that…

The bottlenecks should all be in supply and demand, not in logistics.
If there's vaccine and people who want it, you need an efficient
operation to put it in them until you run out of people or run out of
vaccine. If you run out of vaccine, you're not the bottleneck.

If a hospital would rather throw out doses as they age out than give

Re: [MBZ] NC Covid shots

2021-01-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The distribution and management of vaccinations here in Florida has been
nothing short of a cluster, mainly because the state (and Federal government)
has left it up to the counties to administer, with little to no guidance on how
it should be done. I can’t get into the specifics for my county, but suffice to
say, the term “clown show” was used by one of our county commissioners in
describing the initial efforts.

Our IT group got involved after the initial debacle and engaged a national firm
who is working with the states to handle the scheduling and distribution, and
now things are going far more smoothly and without incident. The issue now is
the lack of vaccine, as we’ve got far less than we need to distribute to the
groups that are identified as needing it.
