Re: [MBZ] OT about when did vehicles become controlled by computers?

2021-10-12 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
To answer your question, sort of.
I just took in a 1988 chevy/GMC suburban that is the first year GM used
electronic throttle body injectors. Prior to 1988 carburetors. The TBI
injectors are triggered by a timing trigger that is part of the
distributor, and an arcane almost computer controls duration of fuel
injection, timing advance, and not much else. I intend to flip it after
cleaning up a few items that need attention. AZ rust free, 454 cubic inch
engine... it will pass anything on the road except a gas station.. 9 pax,
3/4 ton chassis.
I also own 5 [who can own too many?] Ford diesel trucks, 1985, 1986,1992
F450, 1992 F350, which has strictly mechanical injection pumps, mechanical
injectors, then a 1995 [second year Ford used computer controlled injectors]
Then, the Mercedes fleet. All are pre 1985 and Diesel. Mechanical injection
pump, mechanical injectors. No computer anything... 79, 80, 80, 81, 82, 82
My personal view on computer controls for vehicles is that they are fragile
and vulnerable, also, very quickly, replacement computer components are
simply not available, which makes your vehicle a 4,000 lb boat anchor. The
vehicles from various manufacturers, starting around 1988, began to add
more computer controls and electronics, which require more expensive
diagnostic equipment and knowledge of that specific car's systems.
If you elect to buy an older mechanical controlled vehicle, search for the
best one you can find and afford, as your starting point.. my best
suggestion. Then, stock a supply of replacement parts, to keep it running
properly.. [soon, that parts supply will likely run dry, as all new cars
become more electronics dependent..]
[See Kaleb's example of stocking parts cars.. ;)) ]

143k is not high miles.
I'm not sure if 8k is high price these days.
You hear of people paying $5k for 2005 Accords.

Ahh, the "Carmel" of Terre Haute - if there could be such a thing.

Fun fact: In the late 1980s Harley-Davidson was considering selling branded

These use a really weird DIN 13 connector and have 3 kind of weird
video modes. Not knowing for sure if the computer would work I
didn't want to spend $30 for a "real" video converter when I could
spend $5 for a pair of DIN 13 connectors and burn myself soldering
them on to a VGA cable.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/rx4FWRvE6t5r5YTR6Careful, don't get too
close, the jankiness rubs off.
That's actually only the first one, it's a color cable (it carries
color information) and it *probably* works but I don't seem to have
a monitor capable of a 15khz sync rate.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/eUhuBNjqq8DtCp3L8 this one is B&W, I know
it's hard to believe I could make an even more janky cable, it's a
gift. It was hard combining all 3 grounds from the VGA side and
running them into 2 pins and then combining R,G and B and running
those to one pin. The sync signals were easy by comparison.
Anyway, this one actually works for sure:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/nS1keY78ij5n5gxBA
Disappointingly I can't find a PS2 mouse anywhere in my house. I
bought a PS2 to Atari mouse adapter as I was sure I had a mouse
here somewhere. Fortunately I'm sure there are some at the office,
I'll snag one the next time I'm there...
So now that I'm sure the thing works I went online and ordered a
"proper" adapter that does both color and mono. Now I need either a
scan converter or a monitor than can handle 15khz...

Re: [MBZ] Way OT: Dental implant

2021-10-12 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
How much of that was the implants and how much were the crowns?

Two extractions and one implant estimate was $3,400 before insurance.

I don't yet know what the crown will cost as that's back to my regular dentist
to do. I see him again on Thursday.

[MBZ] Way OT: Dental implant

2021-10-12 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
So my dentist sent me to a periodontist to have a "pocket" around my top back
molar evaluated. Its the tooth right next to my wisdom tooth. It's not
bothering me but the dentist says it will become a problem.

Periodontist wants to extract that tooth and the wisdom tooth, do a bone graft
and an implant (basically a titanium post) then my regular dentist will put a
crown on the implant.

This will all run at least $3k with insurance covering some unknown amount but
I'm likely out of pocket at least $2k.

I have HSA savings to cover it but this just seems like a lot of money for one
tooth that's not even visible. Wondering how much I would miss having that
tooth if my dentist just did the extractions and left it at that.

Never mind.

I was thinking the clock was about the right size to try to use in my Ghia but
I think it would be too much effort after I found this:

https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speedway-2-1-16-Clock-Black-Face,231738.html

This is pretty close to the look of the factory clock, the face markings aren't
quite right but if I got ambitious I could probably transplant the face from
the old clock since it's the same diameter.

Most likely I will just keep the old VDO clock in case any future owner would
want to repair it and put the car back to original in that regard.

Re: [MBZ] OT ball valves

2021-10-12 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I have installed valves all over in my house so that I can turn off
parts of the water system without turning it all off. Most are ball
valves as I was looking to have full flow. They are not used daily
obviously but I did periodically open and close them in an effort to
keep them operative. Unfortunately, I don't seem able to get them to
totally stop water flow.

For example, the valves that permitted me to shut off the outside
faucets got to where I could not stop the water. The faucets outside
dripped constantly. I finally took the ball valves out and put in the
old style valves so that I could totally shut the outside faucets off.
The outside valves were gate valves and the ones in the basement were
ball. Now both inside and outside are the old style ( I think just
referred to as stop valves).

Computers took over engine management in the 1980s and transmission
control in the 1990s. Late 1990s/early 2000s you started to see cabin

Computer engine controls were introduced in 1980 on domestic cars (GM). As far

became commonplace. My friend has a 1995 GMC Yukon (OBD1) and the ABS system is

Yep, BTDT. I only suggested it as it's already leaking, so not really anything
to lose.

Same goes for the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. I've seen advice to
open that every month or so to flush out any sediment but often you won't be
able to fully close it again. They are typically very cheap plastic valves, so
if you plan to do that, best to replace the valve with a good one before you
fill the water heater.

For what it’s worth, your buddies over at the US Forest Service have been using

We watched several drones on FlightAware this past summer when they were fire

Orders of sushi, beer and ice cream flew across the Tel Aviv coast on
Monday as part of a government-led initiative to create a national drone
network. The project intends to ease road congestion, improve air quality
and be an economically viable option for the 9.2M consumers around the
country. Flights have also been used for medical purposes, like delivering
donated blood and plasma, though officials must ensure the skies could be
cleared in case of turbulent weather, a war or an emergency.

*Phase 3:* The National Drone Initiative has a total of eight planned
phases, with the latest stage conducting around 300 flights per day above
open areas. The UAVs can currently carry a maximum load of approximately
2.5 kg (5.5 pounds) and have a 5-kilometer (3-mile) radius for missions,
though the Israel Innovation Authority said that by next year the perimeter
will be expanded to 100-kilometers (60 miles). Many of the 16 participating

Just to put the hard cost of this incident into perspective.
Two emergency slides were deployed. Cost per slide [general overview, it
may vary based on exact model of aircraft. This is based on a 737.]
https://consumerist.com/2016/04/08/unnecessarily-deployed-emergency-slide-could-cost-united-airlines-as-much-as-3/
Add to that, landing fees, parking fees, and crew transfer costs, passenger
transfer costs, etc..
The aircraft now sets with missing components for the Required Equipment
List [working escape slides] and can only be flown to a repair facility to
be "repaired" ... which requires a special ferry permit [FAA issued] and a
"Ferry pilot crew" to be flown in to fly the aircraft to maintenance shop,
before it can be put back in service. More costs.
Ground handling fees... a tug has to tow the aircraft to temp parking
[parking fees for an airliner are not cheap]...
Possible emergency response fire,Medical and police costs... [yep... there
will be some].
This is just a short list, I'm sure other costs have been overlooked.

Re: [MBZ] OT water heaters

2021-10-12 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
These tanks generally have two heater elements: upper and lower. The lower
element has a simple thermostat (disk type) that turns on and off near the set
point, with some hysteresis. The upper thermostat is more complex; when off
(water warm enough) it routes power to the lower thermostat. When on (water at
top too cool) power is removed from the lower element and the upper element is
powered. The thermostats can be replaced without removing the heater elements
or braining the tank.

Seems unlikely to me that the original one and a replacement one would fail
that quick. Old water heater was there 15 years and never had a valve fail. I
wonder if it’s not shutting off when it should and heats the water too hot.

Also, if someone "tests" the P-T safety valve by manually "burping" it, there
is a chance of suspended solids getting stuck on the valve's sealing surfaces
(causing a dripping leak).
On the plus side, these valves are (relatively) cheap and easy to replace.

Still not right. The Karen was another _passenger_. I mostly blame
the airline staff for overreacting based on the unsubstantiated word
of a passenger. Karen was just another idiot, nothing too special
about that. I kind of feel sorry for her, her world is just chock full

There was no bomb threat. Just a guy playing with his camera, which 'Karen'
didn't recognize,
and subsequently pulled the fire alarm, so to speak, rather than investigating
further. Flight
diverted, massive delays and inappropriate response costs ensue, and an
innocent camera
owner ends up facedown on the pavement with knees in his back. And Karen,
aloof and
uncaring, moves along to her next victim...

[MBZ] Sorta OnT -- power ratchet

2021-10-12 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I was thinking about getting a power ratchet tool, I see this one on
Amazon that is not too expensive and seems to get good reviews, about
half the price of a Milwaukee.  I have a ridgid impact (screw) driver
that I can put a socket adapter in that works fine for smaller bolts so
would not necessarily need a 3/8" impact driver of the same sort.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08KGX56D4

There seems to be a whole bunch of similar chinee tools for a bit cheaper

https://www.amazon.com/Cordless-Electric-Variable-Lithium-Ion-Batteries/dp/B07X37XMX3

Anyone had an experience with these things?

IMO if the water is getting hot enough to open the relief valve the tenant
would notice it, being scalded in the shower or washing dishes.

Is it a slow trickle leak from the valve or is it periodically opening and
letting out a blast of hot water?

If a slow leak, might try operating the valve manually with the lever a few
times, if is a bit of debris from the manufacturing or installation that's
preventing it from sealing up properly that might flush it out.

Seems unlikely to me that the original one and a replacement one would fail
that quick. Old water heater was there 15 years and never had a valve fail. I
wonder if it’s not shutting off when it should and heats the water too hot.

It's a Temperature and Pressure Valve, right?
What if the thermostat sticks, or doesn't sense tank temperature because
there's insulation caught behind it?

Re: [MBZ] OT water heaters

2021-10-12 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
It makes me think there is a temp control issue with that heater.
Take your laser digital temp device [everyone has one now, right?] and take
the actual water temp of the water coming out at the leak I'll bet you
have a steam heater instead of a water heater and the temp control is
having random failure which overheats the water enough to blow the valve
open...
The relief valve is built into the heater to give a relief point before the
steam pressure blows the faucets off the walls or breaks pipes...
etc...
Faulty water heater... warranty time for the whole heater, not just the
relief valve
