It probably would have started immediately but the connection at the
bleeder was leaking so it was sucking air.  I knew I was not getting it
bled properly and suspected a leak somewhere but could not tell where
till after it ran.

Tomorrow I will try to get the 220D to run.  I did try it afterwards but
my battery was too low.  It turned over but sounded like it did not have
any compression.  I tried it again and that time it did sound like it
might try to fire so I have the battery charging and will try it
tomorrow.  Worse case I have an engine for it but would prefer to get
this one going.  The story with it was they had it rebuilt and within a
short period of time it started making noise.  So who knows.

Find a cheaper locksmith is my vote. $65 is a crazy price to open a simple lock
that you are bringing to them. I could maybe see it if they had to drive out
somewhere.

Here’s the deal based on the EPC:

The key and lock are sold a a unit, meaning they don’t source the key
separately, nor could they identify it. So your choice is to find a cheaper
locksmith, or just spend $50 to buy the whole shebang at the stealership.

163 890 02 89 - Cylinder and keys

That or drill it and find a generic replacement lock and key. I’m sure it’s
pretty generic.

I wonder what the price is for a Chevy instead of a Mercedes?

I am not sure about how the blasting with water might affect the metal,
but suspect it would be about the same ass basic sandblasting. It  will
require that you use something to etch the surface of the metal. If you
don't the paint will not stick properly. I don't recall a brand name but
I have a bottle of fluid that I use to wash down areas that have been
blasted.

For fine restoration work on valuable cars, chemical paint removal is better.

Well I just swapped the failed Norton wire wheel at Lowe’s for a DEWALT which I
had better service from. I hope that will get me through the trailer cleanup.
If not I’ll have to get one of those water sand blasters and give that a try.

Yes, no doubt.
Renting a trailer might be too.
I assume you wouldn't want to buy it without seeing it so you would need
to rent locally and haul it both ways, empty if you didn't buy it.

It can be removed , I believe. I was told by a local body shop guy that if it’s
four years or less in age it comes off pretty easily. Older than that and it
tends to get brittle and cracks, making it more labor intensive to remove all
the pieces.

An M112 would probably work well, as the oil filler is just about the diameter

That one is just like what I bought years ago. Amazing, it's about the same
price. Mine has replaceable ceramic tips also. I rigged up a pressure pot
that feeds sand from the bottom instead of sucking it out of a bucket. That
improved the sand supply at the nozzle and resulted in more stripping
faster.

2021-12-03 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I keep a Bosch on the shelf at both locations. Cheap insurance. Last time I
needed one, about 4 years ago, I got the call, the car cooled down enough for
it to start again (temperature is often a failure mode) and got it home. 15
minutes later it was good to go. I was ready to swap it out where the car died,
but since it restarted when it cooled down and it was only about 3 miles from
home, I took the chance.

Re: [MBZ] Speaking of tires

2021-12-03 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
What the shop I went to did was put the wheel on their balancer, spin it
and hold a piece of marking chalk at the tread... The bulge marked itself
very nicely, and the balancer clearly showed the extreme out of balance.
Instantly it was very convincing. I left the marks when I took the tire set
back to Big O... and got stonewalled. Which reminds me.. it's time to jab
another needle in the Big O voodoo doll... :))

The pressure washer is engine driven [6 hp] and puts 4,500 psi at the work

"special nozzle" paint removal from equipment is fast, and nearly painless.
I'm particularly pleased at how it gets all the paint and corrosion around

Dry it off, and it's ready to take paint [soon, because I'm down to clean
bare metal]. Sorry, I will have to go look at it to find the Mfg.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Working the system

2021-12-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
A friend worked for a fish farm, they used Ryobi for everything because they
were cheap and were only going to get ruined when they got dropped into the
fish tank.
Most of the big brands are owned by 2 or 3 companies. The company that owns
Milwaukee also owns Rigid and Ryobi for instance. Stanley Black and Decker also
owns Dewalt and Porter Cable and Craftsman. I don't think that there is really
all that much difference between the brands.

One of the reasons I bought Makita is that they are self owned, not a zombie
brand...

That's for sure.  The (just finished) carport project involved 600
self-drilling screws.  Possible with a drill but only with considerable
pressure.  Stepson's Makita drill-driver was the cat's meow for these.

The small impact is wy better for driving screws than a drill, especially
for Phillips head.I use mine a lot for light mechanicing too. Especially
switching Dad's lawn tractor from mower to snowblower. It's got a spring assist
on the lift and dialing the tension on the spring takes forever with a wrench,
it's easy peasy with that little impact.

I've tried it both ways and haven't seen any real difference, it's the heating

Same. I would have expected it to suck air through the drain hole and start
dripping oil as soon as the vacuum dropped.

Also have heard that you can renew a crush washer by heating it with a
blowtorch and letting it cool slowly.

Re: [MBZ] Speaking of tools

2021-12-03 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Some years ago, I bought an attachment for one of my pressure washers that
hooks to a sandblaster pot and uses the water pressure to suck sand into
the high pressure spray stream. Unlike having to rely on an air compressor
for air sandblast and all the dust and frustration that comes with that.
The pressure washer is engine driven [6 hp] and puts 4,500 psi at the work
end. With a good supply of dry sharp sand and vacuum from the water at the
"special nozzle" paint removal from equipment is fast, and nearly painless.
I'm particularly pleased at how it gets all the paint and corrosion around
weld joints and complex areas.
Dry it off, and it's ready to take paint [soon, because I'm down to clean
bare metal]. Sorry, I will have to go look at it to find the Mfg.

Non original wheels take 15 inch tires, which expands tire selection a
great deal. The ask price demands a purist, however.
I have an 82, with a new set of 14" Michlens, that is the same color and

Re: [MBZ] How to remove the drain plug without losing oil.

2021-12-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
For the copper washer what you're actually doing is annealing it. Copper work
hardens and softens with heat. This is a thing I run into on kerosene lanterns,
there is a flange where the generator meets the lantern body that hardens and,
for some reason, on kerosene lanterns tends to leak. Heat it up to a dull red,
quench, repeat, the brass is now dead soft and will seal fine.
