Re: [MBZ] Local W108 in MD

2024-07-14 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
108s are expensive to sort out, especially 4.5s. They all need all the
fuel hoses, timing chain, wiring harness repairs - none of these things
impact the 6 cylinder cars. Running 4.5s in nice cosmetic condition are
worth mid to high teens, but often sell for more at auction.

I often recommend 6 cylinder cars over 4.5s, unless someone really wants
the extra power and has the means to spend an extra $10-20k to sort out the
car.

I have two 4.5s right now... gotta sell one at least

All 108s, including 4.5s, could be had with leather and MB Tex. I current
own one of each with a 4.5, both short wheelbase.

Even a 250S could have leather. Only exception might be the odd ball
108.015 300SE… the steel sprung M189 powered car…. They might all have
leather. I have one in the shop now, it’s quite a machine!

Re: [MBZ] Tires for my 1980 300SD

2024-06-08 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Vredestein Sprint Classics in 185R14 are a great choice for a 300SD, and
it’s the original size.

195 70 14 works, but the choices are getting worse and worse. Except you
can now get Pirelli CN36s in that size.

I just put a set of Michelin MXV 185R14s on my 300SD… pricey but super
cool. I put them on a lot of customer cars so I wanted to experience them
myself.

Yes, I has two Brandon’s I got off eBay. They’re excellent professional
cleaners, mostly designed for lab use. I use them frequently for carbs and
other smaller things.

They make a great line of cleaners for them include one that will strip
rust and leave you with bare steel!

You do need to split the box, but that’s not the hard part… getting it out

Overall it’s not a horrible job, it’s just something the internet loves to
complain about.

I’m about to do one in my 4.5, the blower died last winter :(

Re: [MBZ] CIS pressure gauge?

2023-02-28 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I make a lot of pressure measurement setups myself with parts from McMaster
Carr for fuel pressures, transmissions, etc. D Jet is very easy - simplest
solution is a gauge with barb hose adapter installed in place of the cold
start valve. You can get fancy and T off one of the longer fuel hoses if
you want to keep the cold start injector in the loop.

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] Little Jamie

2023-02-19 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I rented a pretty large space in a commercial building. I had to get a
zoning variance, which took quite a bit of time and money (as Pierre
mentioned).

The traditional gas station repair shop doesn't work for the classic
business. First, they're expensive because they have good visibility and
traffic, which doesn't do anything for me. And they offer no indoor
storage for cars, which is critical to do the work seriously.

I drove them a bit when they were new. I thought the B class was a really
neat car. Not really what you'd expect from a Mercedes, but very useful
space in a small car and well designed. And fun to drive. The low range
is not an issue around town.

Re: [MBZ] MBZParts

2023-01-03 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
They're been asking for money from people in various forms for a while now,
calling it an "investment". They bit off way more than they could chew
last year when they bought a warehouse full of classic parts and had no
means to store or move them, resulting in a fire sale.

I buy a lot of classic parts all the time and their site never comes up for
me when I google part numbers - I'd guess they're doing something wrong.

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] CIS

2022-12-17 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Ok, so you mentioned that if you put some fuel down the intake it will run
for a few seconds, correct? If so, don't have enough fuel, not too much.
If this is the case for sure, then you need to turn up the mixture screw in
the fuel distributor housing with a long 4mm wrench. Keep track of how
much you turn it - start by turning it in 1/2 a turn and see what happens.
This might get you closer to an idle. If it dosen't help, put the screw
back to where it was - no need to add additional variables which will
cause issues in the future.

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] CIS

2022-12-17 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
The pump should only run 1-2 seconds when the key is turned on then stop.
If its continuing to run, there is an issue with the relay or elsewhere in
the electrical system. And, injectors should not spray when the engine is
off - perhaps the fuel distributor is stuck. With the engine running, they
do spray constantly (whats what the C is for). The flow is controlled by
the position of the air flow metering plate. What position is the plate
in? It should be roughly even with the narrowest part of the bore it sits
in. If press down with the fuel pump on there should be some
significant resistance and it should return up immediately. With the pump
running you should hear the injectors scream as they inject fuel.

Some versions have a position switch in the distributor housing that
triggers the pump when the metering plate moves down, although I can't
remember which ones. A seized fuel distributor control piston would cause
the symptoms you describe in this case. Especially if you pushed it down
and it didn't return.

You do need a pressure gauge or you're really shooting into the dark. The
factory manual has good coverage of how to test and measure CIS.

The likelihood that the fuel distributor and WUR are working properly after
sitting a long time is nil. Any car I have that sat gets them rebuilt
before even attempting to start it. It prevents a lot of issues.

Do you have a diesel pop tester? You can use it for CIS injectors also,
but the pressure way lower. Replace the gauge with 0-200 psi. You can use
it to diagnose leaking or stuck injectors. Or, just replace them all.
Again, its likely needed.

If the injectors are flooding the cylinders with the key on, you have
multiple issues to resolve before proceeding.

Not super impressive.

Poor repaint with overspray and orange peel. And even too light of a green
for 291. Rough interior (all the seat pads are dead). Missing rear window
trim isn't easily installed. Wrong wipers (not so big, but shows how much
the owner doesn't care). Belt off the AC. Rust in the floors.

Move along

Re: [MBZ] One For The 116 Guys

2022-12-01 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I agree they do work really well when setup correctly. I put a new servo
in my 116 about 9 years ago (new from MB, plastic body) and it’s still
perfect.

I think this is in part due to the more protected location in a 116. 123s
have them mounted low by the exhaust manifold. Plus, when I installed mine
the mounting holes were not threaded. I didn’t have a tap (it’s a standard
thread, not metric) so I left it hanging by the hoses. It’s quite stable
and this additional protection from shock is likely beneficial, especially
in a diesel.

I’ve been driving the car a lot in the last two weeks and the heat works
very nicely. I just leave the dial in the middle at 75, I never have to
touch it. That’s how it should be!

I’ll be putting it away for winter soon, but they still haven’t salted the
roads yet up here.

Re: [MBZ] W108 heater levers - disconnecting tips?

2022-11-12 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I'm glad my instructions are useful!

As for the clips, there are two... the C shaped clips that hold the cable
housing to the lever assembly can be removed with your fingers or a flat
head screwdriver. They will go flying so be careful.

The second clips are the ones that hold the cables to the levers - the
castelled washers, can just be pried off with a small screw driver.
They'll also go flying if you're not careful.

The outer cables for the lower levers are different - you need to access a
philips head screw from above in order to release the cables. I assume I
talked about this in the instructions on my site (which I wrote 20 years
ago, so I don't remember).

As for any parts that might go flying, you can order them from the classic
center. Its best a send a photo of what you need. There are many many
different variants of these levers and cables and I'm always surprised when
I find another version.

I suspect a new blower motor is in your future. The one in my 4.5 recently
died and I need to replace it also. Its not as terrible of a job as the
internet would lead you to believe. There are more difficult jobs, for
sure.

Good luck
Jaime

I'd say this car looks like a really nice example... but will be very time
consuming and expensive to get back on the road. But still a really nice

Re: [MBZ] 107

2022-09-24 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
For proper diagnosis and tuning of D jet you need these items: the factory
manual, a good multi meter, time, money. You really need to take your time
to diagnose every circuit to ensure its within spec, there are no wiring
issues, connector issues (common), etc. And of course, to understand how
it all works together. When you actually need to replace parts (likely),
injectors, trigger points, MPS sensors, and ECUs are all expensive. You
need to take the time to repin and replace connectors that are damaged or
corroded.

I've been doing a lot of this lately. I just finished a 3.5 that was a
real disaster - lots of incorrect parts and tuning by mechanics who had no
business working on these cars. It would have been much easier to work
with a car not running but in original condition. Ended up taking me about
25 hours of working for a total bill for the customer of around $8000.
That was just to get the car running properly, there is still much more to
do.

On the flip side, my 280SE 4.5 has about 3000 miles on the engine I rebuilt
this spring. On the last tank of fuel I averaged 14.5 mpg, which is pretty
damn good! Took some time to get it really dialed in, especially the MPS.
I've been measuring them and making adjustments on used units to bring them
back to new and it's really successful.

Overall, the 380SL is a better car in lots of ways. The 450SL has more
power, but power isn't everything. But I'd probably buy the one in better
condition cosmetically.

Re: [MBZ] Tool Boxes

2022-09-07 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I have a Craftsman "ball bearing" cabinet I bought on sale back in 2010 or
so and its been excellent, stands up to frequent use and full drawers.

I've been researching more professional cabinets lately and have found
Lista, Vidmar, and Rousseau cabinets to be very nice. They're not cheap,
but still a fraction of what Snap On boxes cost, which seem to be more for
show than anything else. Its worth searching these names locally and see
what you find. Its all custom built, but you might find some really good
used pieces for a good price.

Re: [MBZ] Classic Center retirement

2022-09-01 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Is not that they "don't care about" them, its simply a matter of suppliers
no longer willing to make the parts and not finding a cost effective
replacement. If there is a demand, they will try to find a solution.
They're a business, not a parts charity.

Next complaint will be that reworked replacement parts are too expensive.
It takes significant resources to manufacture any parts for any car, new or
old. Engineers, purchasing, business cases, testing, quality control, raw
materials sourcing, tooling, etc. They don't just walk up to a machine and
push the "make me door seals for a 123" button.

Think about how you buy your parts...are you supporting the system by
buying from MB genuine? Or are you looking for the cheapest possible
source regardless of quality? Then complaining when MB support is gone...

Owners of the 60s cars are happy to pay for parts as the value of their
cars are increasing. MB responds by making parts available. (Like 4.5
engine mounts, NLA for a few years, now available again with a new
supplier).

90s car support brings up another issue: electronics. If the chips don't
exist to buy anymore, its simply impossible to make the parts. Period.
But as the value and demand for these cars increases on the collector
market, you will see more solutions appear. If your goal is to keep your
beater on the road as long as possible and cheap as possible, you're not
the target market for these solutions.

2022-09-01 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Try getting parts for 50s and 60s cars. You'd be amazed how easy it is.

You have to be creative in this business to find parts, but having a source
like the classic center is pretty amazing overall. It's pretty remarkable
what they do have.

For example, I just bought a vacuum pod for the distributor of a 300SEL
3.5. Pretty obscure part, still available, under $100.

Is it perfect, no of course not, but be thankful they put so much effort
into it, its still pretty special.

The classic center is alive and well, and even just moved into a new (much
larger) facility inside the Long Beach VPC. Tom retired months ago, but
hes still active online. I get parts deliveries all the time from them,

Re: [MBZ] W108 heater blower motor - accessible through cowl vent channels?

2022-08-04 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
You can definitely reach the top of the blower to clear out debris and see
if it turns by removing the cowl. Its a bit of a reach, but its possible.

Replacement requires removal of the heater box completely. Its not quite
as horrible as the internet makes it out to be, but it is a time consuming
job and care must be taken not to break too many things.

Re: [MBZ] Cleaning out a 116 fuel tank

2022-07-05 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I was able to clean up the tank of my NSU with gravel and acetone... it
worked surprisingly well, but took time and my upper body was sore for a
few days afterwards. It takes a lot of strength to shake a big fuel tank
with gravel in it.

My first stop would be a radiator shop. I've since found one that might be
up to the job around here. I've used others in the past, but the tanks
come back looking so beat up I won't go back

Take a closer look at the other side. The extreme failure is when they
break, but before that the little ball joints on each end develop play and
make knocking noise. That's when they need replacement.

The units with parts needed (linesets, etc) would run about $9-10k
wholesale for all three units (I got some Fujitsu quotes recently). The
rest of the money is labor and the warranty. This is why I installed my
own... I figured the warranty wasn't worth it. I bought all the pro tools
needed, which didn't cost all that much. I'm going on 8 years since
installing my first unit, still going strong. I think the warranty would
have been 7 years.

Re: [MBZ] Garage heating options

I have a minisplit in my garage and find it to be great solution. The
initial goal was heat, but the AC is a real luxury. The dehumidifying
feature is also really useful in early spring

Re: [MBZ] Opinion on W140 series?

2022-01-20 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I love my W140, a 96 S420. So much so that after selling it last year, I
bought it back! The ride and comfort is on par with the modern S class. I
find it to be quite easy to work on as well. The complexity doesn't scare
me, as its nothing compared to modern cars, but is a lot if you're coming
from the W123 mindset. I took it on a 2000 mile road trip in November and
got 23mpg.

Diesels were OM603 and only the early years... 300SD 92-3 and S350 94-5,
but all the same engine. Not many good ones left, they all seem to be well
used at this point. The peanut gallery will scare you about bent rods, but
at this point in the cars life most of them are fixed or not an issue.

For gas ones, the 96 later cars are more desirable. 722.6 5 speed trans is
a great improvement, better climate control, lots of smaller updates.

I say go for it, despite what Pierre says.

Re: [MBZ] Air in inline filter?

2022-01-19 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Its normal to have air in the filter, but if you see an active stream of
bubbles coming into the filter then you have a leak somewhere between the
filter and the tank. That section of the system is under suction from the
lift pump, so it could suck in air somewhere

But loss of power is usually related to fuel filters, especially the
primary spin on filter. Change them and you're likely to see improvement.
Also consider changing the pick up screen in the tank and its hose too if
you don't know when it was last done.

Re: [MBZ] M117 Longevity

2022-01-19 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Yep, all comes down to how it's cared for. The problem with high mileage
cars like this is people really start to reduce the maintenance needed. It
should be on its second or third front end rebuild, second or third timing
chain, etc. People don't see the value in doing things like this over
250-300k miles so the cars start falling apart. But, if you keep fixing
them, they'll keep running.

Theres a really ugly looking 300D for sale around here thats been sitting
in a garage for 20 years. Looks like the interior is moldy, body is a
mess. I spoke to the guy and he said "I guess its a 6 digit odometer with
tenths because it reads 572xxx". He also told me there has been lots of
interest in the car so he raised the price. I told him he has a car with
over half a million miles and if someones going to give him anything for
it, take it and run! But to get to mileage like that, it took a pretty
special owner with a long-term view of ownership.

Re: [MBZ] Hey Jaime you’re the expert I think

2022-01-08 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Hm... despite having developed and tested that system for several years of
my life, I'm having trouble remembering the details! (I've worked on too
many in the last 15 years since) but lets try.

If the position information at the bottom of the map is showing 9
satellites, then its probably accurate. Does it change sometimes, and
start out with 0 and work its way up to 9 after running a bit (from a cold,
overnight start)? The lat/lon shown there isn't raw GPS data, but an
output of the dead reckoning module which takes into consideration speed of
4 wheels, gyro, and matching of GPS position to the map data (sticking you
to a road).

If you drive, does the position and vehicle direction on the map move or is
it completely stuck?

Its reasonably possible you have a hardware issue which is causing the DR
module to not do its thing.

In the system menu there is an option to delete all the user data. Try
that (you'll lose all your presets, etc).

Also keep in mind that if the car was woken up from a dead state for a long
time, it might need to recalibrate. That just involves driving around a
bit, ideally city blocks with 90 degree turns... shouldn't take more than a
few miles.

Post a picture of the 5 blocks you're talking about. Is it not phone
signal strength?

Yeah, the video suggests he really doesn't know much about these cars, or
what makes this one special. The velour, the engine protection plate, the
aluminum rear trailing arms, all very cool stuff worth talking about.

And I don't understand how he can't mention that eye sore of an air pump
hacked over the alternator.

Re: [MBZ] Lathes?

2021-12-20 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I'm running a variable frequency drive to power an old 3 phase compressor I
got for next to nothing. Pretty cool device. Not only does it output 3
phase power, but you can completely configure it. For example, you can
ramp up with frequency on startup or shutdown for smoother starts, or run
it at higher or lower speeds overall. There are also lots of external
sensors and triggers you can configure. I have mine setup with a pressure
switch on the compressor tank. It does draw a lot of power on a single
phase line, but that's to be expected.

Re: [MBZ] Lift oil drain bucket

2021-12-11 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I’ve got the big one with the air connection to remove the oil and it’s
quite good, also based on Jono’s recommendation.

Get at least two high lift stands, one isn’t enough. You can support one
end of the car while you lift something on the other end to ensure you
don’t disrupt the balance much. Took me a lot of cautious trial and error
to do work like this when I first got my lift. Motor, subframe, diff
mounts, etc. I didn’t think I’d miss the safety of the floor so much!

Trans fluid change should be about the same procedure as the 300D 2.5, just
easier to work on the W116 since things aren't so tight. Use Febi 08971
ATF. Same for the power steering.

Good luck!

I agree with Dan... A few hints to your manager and/or HR before you get to
the point of looking for another job is a better way to go. If they have
the idea you're a flight risk and they value you, it gives them a chance to
do something without burning bridges and labels.

We do it pretty frequently... ID those that are a risk if they're lost and
ensure they're not looking to leave for something like more compensation.

Re: [MBZ] A Manual Coupe

2021-09-27 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I owned one and found it to be quite wonderful to drive with a stick.
Noticeably more powerful than a 240D... less issues up steep hills. Very
quick off the line, faster than a turbo as it has no turbo lag.

I recently drove a very late euro 300D with a 722.4 in it and also found it
really nice to drive.

Like any variant of these non-turbo diesels, having everything in proper
tune is critical... linkages, cam timing, injection timing, etc. It's
usually poorly adjusted linkages which make the transmission shift too
early that make the automatics feel so slow. If you can't reach the shift
point on the speedo in every gear, you're leaving power on the table and
you need every bit you can get in some cases.

Re: [MBZ] OT: VDO mechanical clock cleaning/lubrication

2021-09-13 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I've repaired many, but never had one keep accurate time over any
significant period of time. Now I just repair them so they work because I
like how they sound. (crunch, tick tick tick tick tick...). I just set the
time each time I get into the car.

Just get them from the dealer. Most are still available, and ones that

Re: [MBZ] W115 front subframe bushings

2021-08-30 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
The bolts that go through the center of the mounts are the most risky. As
Dan said, soak them. The unique captured nut they spin into can be damaged
if the bolt is rusted to it and you try to remove it aggressively. I don't
find it to be a problem very often. There is a torque spec for those bolts
and it's not very much... maybe 50nm? Don't over tighten them.

Do one side at a time. Remove the calipers and tie them up so you don't
stretch on the brake hoses, or disconnect the hoses and cap them. After
removing the bolts for the mount on one side, the subframe will come down
some but will then be limited by the engine. At this point you can undo
the center bolt on the engine mount to pull the subframe down further. Its
also a great time to change the engine mounts, of course. A floor jack is
useful to support things and move them back into place. And make sure
you're not stressing the engine fan against the shroud.

You can usually pry out the mounts from the subframe with little effort.
Installing the new ones is much easier with a rubber lubricant. I use the
MB stuff, but I suppose you can use soap and water also.

It's really not a terrible job unless there is rust.

Good luck!
Jaime

Re: [MBZ] Well I’m booked to NYC

2021-08-10 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I guess it depends what kind of experience you want to get. The tourist
stuff is all there and well known. Going to the top of building is cool,
but once you go up one you've seen them all.

You can really absorb so much of the city by just walking around, sitting
outside and eating a meal, and visiting some museums. Goto a show or
something. Visit B photo. All stuff new yorkers do.

Best time of year to see NYC is late January or early Feb, if you don't
mind the snow. I remember Janet and I were walking around one cold night
(back when she lived there before we were married) and we walked by
Rockefeller plaza. Some guy at the door was announcing there was no line

Re: [MBZ] Vredestein tires, any good?

I have Vredesteins on several of my cars and like them quite a bit. I run
tubes in the 13" ponton wheels (1959 219) and tubeless in everything else.

Re: [MBZ] Glow plugs loop style

2021-08-03 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Exactly! If you want to get fancy, close the points with your finger and
check the resistance with a meter across them. Should be 0 or nearly 0.
If it's higher, from a few ohms up to no connection, that's your issue.
Check again after cleaning.

Re: [MBZ] Cheap Chinese lifts

2021-06-09 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
The 12' ceiling really held me up for a while until I had an experienced
installer come and look at my space. Some lifts require that height for
the columns, but the Mohawk I have has shorter columns with overhead
hydraulic lines that are adjustable. I have 10.5' ceilings and can raise
any car (I've had quite a few, as heavy and large as a long W140) full
standing height, maximum height of the lift. I can store a vehicle under
if needed, as I did a few times this year during winter storms. A truck or
tall vehicle would be an issue, but I don't own any of those.

I paid $8k installed for a 7k asymmetrical Mohawk. No regrets at all. The
7k isn't available anymore and their next smallest lift is quite a bit more
expensive unfortunately.

Allan,
Trial and error and some common sense!

I have a Mohawk asymmetrical lift and a balanced load isn't always obvious
due to the angle of the columns. But you can determine if you're heavy in
one direction or the other based on the load felt on some of the rollers.
