Re: [MBZ] OT: anyone using an under-counter water filter?

We used to use this
https://www.lowes.com/pd/A-O-Smith-AO-MF-B-Single-Stage-GAC-Under-Sink-Water-Filtration-System/1000576419
under the kitchen sink for both cold and hot water (stainless steel
canister for the hot) when we were drinking city water. It was great, you
can choose what you want to filter for - particles, chlorine, etc. IIRC, we
changed the filters once a year.

We now have two 20 inch tall fitlers with graduated particle filters - down
to 1 micron in the well house - so all of our water is filtered. Taste
wasn't an issue here - the water is great.

It doesn't matter which fuel an engine burns, if you don't get it up to
temp, you deposit water and combustion byproducts in the oil, which starts
to eat the insides of the engine. I use this stuff because we drive maybe
once every other week:
https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/camguard.php?clickkey=4333

However, if Snook is still trading cars every six months, it's a non-issue
for him. We intend to keep these cars for another ten years, if not till we
die, so I try to take care of them.

I'd go the extra mile looking for a turbo 606 - it's really hard to go back
to an NA Diesel after driving a turbo Diesel for a while.

Re: [MBZ] New rubbers

2022-05-13 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
The AWD vehicles I owned (320ML) had no freewheeling of any wheels at any
time. Same with the current Subaru. The donut wheel/tire is for limited use
- just enough to get you to a tire shop, and to be driven at a low speed.
I don't know what the tire diameter difference tolerance is, but I can see
the tire shops not replacing one tire for liability reasons - they don't
want to be replacing differentials.

It's more of an issue with aircraft engines where an overhaul can start at
$25,000 and go up, and where it's quite likely that an engine has been
sitting for too long.
That having been said, I did see one airplane that had been sitting for
15-20 years be started and flown out on a "ferry permit" for it's annual
inspection at an airport 150 miles away.

Unless the cam is sitting in the oil, I don't think the engine design makes
much difference. There is a lot of pressure on the cam from the followers -
when the rust comes off it leaves pits with possible sharp edges. These
will spall the followers and the cam in time. How much time depends on how
deep the rust was. YMMV.

Yes - "Camguard" - but you have to use it before the engine sits for a long
time. I use it in our cars because we only drive them every other week or
so. I also use it in the airplane because I never know when it might be
down for more than a couple of weeks.

Starting a car that has been sitting and having its engine being "OK" are

When you need 800 to say 1500 feet at sea level, 8000 is a lot of runway,
even at 7000 ft. I flew into Los Alamos once in a C172 - interesting
airport - one way in, the other way out - the mountain was too high on the
west side to climb over on departure. I was also surprised at all the 65 -
85 HP NA aircraft parked there - Cubs, Champs, and Ercoupe, etc. 6000 feet
of runway seemed fine for those old low powered aircraft.

Make that Extreme Simple Green -

It's OK for aircraft, shouldn't hurt your wheels. I use it with one of the
air powered siphon sprayer guns and hot/warm water. It takes the exhaust
residue right off the belly of the airplane.

I should add that I bought 65 gallons of regular UL today (sans ethanol) -
cost $250! However, it beats the airport price of 100LL at $6.50/gallon!

2022-04-14 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
You're missing the point of it. It has nothing to do with the longevity of
the car, nor your pocket book in any way. It is meant to reduce the amount
of gasoline burnt that isn't propelling the car. Simply lowering the total
amount of gas burned, not reducing your gas bill or total operating costs
for the car.

standard Linux WiFi setup - IIRC you have to edit a txt file with your WiFi

BTDT, but in a small vehicle. The owners manual for the F150 says to
replace all five tires every 7 years regardless of tread wear or condition.
Being cheap, and not seeing any cracks in the sidewall, and since they live
in a garage most of the time, I'll wait until next year (10 yrs since new)
to replace them. I just replaced the 9 yr old original battery today as
preventative maintenance.

I don't understand the point that you can get caught breaking the law

First, they are bolts, not nuts.
Second, if you would drill and safety wire them, it would be obvious at a
glance that they were loose from the lack of twisted safety wire. Darn -
now I might have to do that to my cars - like I need yet another thing to
do.

A friend had one when we were in high school. The engine would not blow up
if you kept it under 50MPH, go over and it was major overhaul time - again.

Our Amazon drivers seem to be the best of the bunch around here - they
always leave the package where I specified - on the shelf beside the front
door. UPS and Fedex are all over the place, including once leaving my box
at the intersection between our street and the joining one - 400 feet from
our driveway. Amazon and USPS do the best, most consistent job here in the
sticks.

I ordered some tools, checked the delivery status on Tuesday evening at
6:45PM, and it said "delivered to front porch at 8:10PM" - amazing ability
to predict the future, however, the package never arrived. This was DHL.
Got a refund and ordered from another vendor.

I'm thinking it's time to replace the original battery in our 2013 F150,
just in case it dies when I'm away from home. The question is, do I need to
maintain 12v to the car while changing batteries? If so, how - via the
lighter socket or juggling wires with another battery as I change them?
I guess I could try to RTFM, but it's easier to ask here ---
