2011-03-21 Thread Rhonald Angelo

Good morning, just wanted let you know that I have been notified of a
suspicious e-mail that some of you might have received. This e-mail references
a money-making opportunity and contains a link with mphTLG in the content.
Please do NOT open anything, delete it. My account has been shadowed; whatever
that means. I do NOT send out messages like this; never have and never will.

Please run a scan on your computer to look for anything suspicious. Please let
me know if you experienced anything. I did NOT open the link, so I have no
idea what it is or where it leads. Anything coming from me would usually
contain a greeting, as a common courtesy as when seeing someone in person. One
would see someone and just start talking on a subject without saying hello.

Again, pls let me know if you got anything claiming to be from me.

Thanks and hoping this has not caused any inconvenience to you.

Re: [MBZ] 300D Water leakage

2009-08-04 Thread Rhonald Angelo

Hey Wilton, I have not checked yet...but the headliner appears dry. I can
check this evening. As for the rest of the possible places...and the other
great responses (thanks) I have gotten in re to this issue. I also remembered
to check my binder I created when I first got the car and joined the list. I
found some posts from 2002 about the drain around the ac evaporator. The AC
does not work and has not for years.

Here is what I am thinking...I am willing to drive as far as NYC and to
Richmond VA and anywhere in between...to connect with somebody who can show me
all these areas and give me some guidance on where all this stuff is, shouldn't
I be able to fix some of this myself? What I cannot fix, I want to be able to
tell the guys at the shop exactly where to go and what to replace. Who lives
within this 400 mile radius of Washington, DC?

Thanks

[MBZ] 300D Water leakage

2009-08-03 Thread Rhonald Angelo

On Sunday morning, about 3 a.m. we got a downpour in the Washington, DC area.
Later that morning, when I went outside, I just decided to check the area
behind the drivers seat...Ias I noticed a bit of water before...back in late
June when there was so much rain.

This time I had about 3 inches of water. On the way to suck out the water with
a vac, you could hear it sloshing around..like being in a boat. WHERE is this
water coming from? The hood drain holes are clear. THere is no water under
the mat in front, and nothing in the front or back on the passenger side. The
trunk is dry. I had the rear drivers door cover off some years ago to repair
the hinge, and read it you don't put it back precisely, water cdan get in, but
the guys at my repair shop say that has nothing to do with it. I had the front
and back window sealed when a bit of water was seeping in during hard rain at
high speed. I was not driving in the rain on Sunday; I got back from Richmond
before it began raining. I don't know where to look.

Thanks

Hmm, so that is what happens...I looked tonight and the little spring loaded
door on my drivers side lock is missing...I was wondering why it freezes and
there is not snow or rain...so can you replace this by itself or does the whole
door lock have to be replaced?

Re: [MBZ] Re Low temp starting

2009-01-22 Thread Rhonald Angelo

Ned, Mine burned out and I thought it was because I ran it all night...I saw it
somewhere that thought 2-3 hours was enough if temps got down around 9- 20
degrees. But I guess in places where it gets to be -30 that would be a
different story. I would need a plug in heater too.

I just left the shop and got a new one installed. I posted an earlier
thread...not being able to start 2 weeks ago and no glow light...from tomorrow
(Friday). The tow truck came and after connecting to the portable batter
charger, it started on the third try.

It started more easily this morning, though a bit rough so I took the
opportunity to go to the shop. I had one glow plug that was bad, but the guys
said they suspect jelled fuel more than anything. They treated my fuel with
the 911 stuff as well. They say it is the best thing going. Should be good to
go now.

Ok, before it burned out, I would just plug it in in my driveway...a few times
I did it overnight, which is probably why it burned out...did not realize it
was not supposed to go all night. I think two hours at the most? Could the
heavy duty extention cord be be hooked up to a timer? to come on say at 6 a.m.?

Re: [MBZ] Low temp starting

2009-01-21 Thread Rhonald Angelo

Ok, I have not had an issues cutting off, but Friday a week ago, the 300D would
not start, and after two attempts on Sat and Sun...so think I ran the battery
down...I called roadside assistance on Monday, they came and hooked up the
portable battery charger. It started on the 3rd trylots of smoke, some
rocking and finally it smoothed out. I then left, took it down 395 to the Gym.
When I came out an hour later, no glow light, but it started smoothly...what
is happening when the light does not come on? The fuse is fine. Then as I
left, I took it down past Edsall Road, and turned around on the express lanes
for the Italian tune up...but think I should have gone a little farther
out...past Springfied. I went from 0 to 75 and held it there as long as I
could...all seemed well. Drove into Takoma Park, got out ran into the store
and was back in about 12 min. Still no light, but started ok. I got some anti
gel...but it says something about opening the fuel filter...that isn't going to
happen...then it says put it into the tank. I have a bit less that half a
tank...do I just put in 1/2 of bottle, then fill up the tank? Seems to me it
will take a while for the mix to reach the fuel filter. Other than that,
waiting Thursday...it is supposed to be in teh high 40's.

Wow, that is lot for for junk food (exept the water) Too bad you didn't get
some cashback for buying it. I found something that gives me cash back on
hundreds of products I buy everyday. From tools I use in the yard, to 50
sports and fitness stores, things like Turbo Tax, Vista Print, department
stores, computer and electronics, and clothing from Dockers, Timberland Boots,
Eddie Bauer and bookstores like Barnes and Noble and Borders Books, there is a

[MBZ] The Great Outdoors!

2009-01-07 Thread Rhonald Angelo

Happy New Year Kaleb/Listers...I hope this is a good year for everyone. I have
been away for a while so first let me give a big thanks to all of the advice,
comments, etc. I have gotten. My car would probably be in the junk pile by
now.

The '85 300D is doing fine with 310,000 miles+ aside from a bit of rust
starting at the right rear wheel well. Last year, I e-mailed Kaleb to get
permission (original e-mail follows) to mail an off-topic message to you. I had
seen a thread a while back about fishing and hunting, etc. and have lost the
thread. This led me to add some things and to include you in the projects I am
working on. This is the 1st of my ideas to come to fruition.

I thought some of you might like to know more about what I am doing. Log on
and let me know what you like best. All your questions should be answered
here, but feel free to contact me off the list at rhonald_ange...@hotmail.com
This is something you don't want to miss out on. I also have a DVD with other
details and more links. The DVD has to be snail-mailed because a streaming
version is not available yet.

I also have something for the wives and girlfriends who may or may not fully
share this interest.

Ok, that's it for now...thanks. Let me know...

Re: [MBZ] W123 noises/compression?

2007-09-23 Thread Rhonald Angelo

Hey Jim, thanks for the response...this morining I went to the grocery store
and no problems, though I did not take it up to 70 or anything, but I did not
hear all the squeaking sounds and there was no shaking at idle...that seems to
only happen after driving at high speed for more than a half hour or so.

Ok,...Mitch is booked, but maybe I can get one of the mechanics to look at the
below items.

Ok, I will print this and run by to see Mitch this week to have them check
those, but it just seems odd this would happen right after taking it
in...though one cannot predict when things will happen obviously. I might need
to be on the road again on Thurs and I have a training in Richmond to attend
on Saturday. The turbo parts have been working just fine, and they finally got
rid of the whistle...some little wire about 8" long was capped off and that
stopped it. This was last year and I have not had any issues related to the
turbo. I stayed off the road after I got the two tires except that one time
purposely so I would not wear into the tires. I just seems odd that the
vibrations and the steering noises would be connected...and this moriing there
is none of that...just the still existing "loose feeling" generated by the
lower control arm bushings being worn. They showed me and said how the front
wheels could move back and forth; the alignment would not get rid of that.

Bad fuel?? H, I never in a million years would have thought about that; as
I know nothing about this..I just go to the diesel pump and fill it.

Ok, I will have them take a look at that.

[MBZ] W123 noises/compression?

2007-09-23 Thread Rhonald Angelo

Morning...ok, this is weird. Recently I replaced the two front tires, as they
had worn badly, the left was worn on the outside. I thought is was because the
upper control arms were worn, which were replaced in Oct. 06. I also had a
service done. I realize that the tires wore because the front end needed
aligned. I took it on Friday, got it done, new belts and oil change. He told
me that he would set the alignment, but that the lower control arm bushings
were worn, which explained the "watery feeling" in the front end.

I noticed a significant difference in how the car drove. Then yesterday, Sat,
I drove to Philadelphia for the day. I was cruising around 60, just relaxed
with time to get where I was going. The woman that I was meeting there to
present a business oportunity passed me, so I thought I should speed it up a
bit. As I attempted to push it up to 70 or so, the car began to vibrate and it
was like nothing was happening...it actually slowed down some, so I backed
off...a bit later on a slight decline on I 95 it was fine, I got up to about
75then it did it again...I had the pedal all the way to the floor and the
car would not increase speedwhat is happening?

Then as I stopped for the 2nd toll, the car was shaking very badly at idle,
which I know is the rack damper screw. I also checked the transmission fluid
which was low, so I added to it. This continued all the way to Philadelphia.
I got there about 3:40. When I left at 9:10 p.m., all seemed fine as I started
out, but then I started hearing more noises coming from the supsension?
Creaking and groaning and I pulled over opened the hood and did not see, hear
or smell anything strange. Then as I turned the steering wheel left and right,
I heard creaking noises. No warning lights come on, and all the gauges appear
normal.

As I got back on the road, again...I never got it past 72 mph, and that was
only for about 8 seconds or so at a time. It was fine at 50 - 61 mph or so.

Now, last weekend, I drove down to the Edsel Road area, and came back on the
express lanes for the "italian tune up" NONE of this occurred..I had it up to
80 -85 most of the way back until approaching the Pentagon area.

When the front end is aligned, are there screws or bolts that are loosened and
tightened? What is involved?
but what would that have to do with loss of power at higher speeds. The timing
chain was replaced in 2001 I think. The last service only reported a worn
injection pump (is this the culprit?) My record file is at the office, and I
don't think I am due for service yet. What do I need to ask the mechanic?
Mitch Cars is booked till the end of Oct. and recommended the guy I took it to.

All I know, is that it was fine before I took it in. I need to go back to
Philadelphia this week, so I need to find out what is going on.

Thanks

Here it is, for all the world and Andrew..

Returning from Gemutleicheit in '94?, on PA Turnpike, w/4 other
Benzes... Went cough, sputter, sputter, die... (Didn't see reserve
light) and created a 10-15 mile backup since breakdown lane was
blocked by Jersey barriers. Tom, a 300SD buddy, went to Breezewood
exit and returned down westbound, jumped median, put 2 gallons in,
pumped primer, started car and I was outta' there. While this was
going on, I ran back down breakdown lane and tried to get everyone to
slow down. When asked, "what's wrong?", I replied "Some AH up there
ran out of fuel!!!" Filled up at truck stop and semi driver looked
down at me and said "You the GUY?"... Then, "Don't worry, you'll be
replaced tomorrow"

still a gem from the mid 80's. MB will never make anything as good as these

Price of my 1985 123.193, purchased new in January '85 was ~$28k. The
price went up maybe 5% shortly after I purchased mine.

Hi Rhonald,

Back before I moved to AZ in 1999, there were several... One east of
Rockville Pike on Montrose Road in Rockville and one in No Va, but I
don't remember exactly where. The Greater Washington Section (MBCA)
held a couple of Tech Sessions at their facilities.

Try doing a Google on "Paintless Dent Removal" and Maryland or
Virginia...

Are you an MBCA member??? Just curious...

Brian,

I've used Paintless Dent Removal several times... aka Dent
Doctor... depends on the locale. Usually $60 + per dent depending
on size... Once upon a time, my 300SD suffered over 80 dents from
falling acorns. Paid IIRC about $600, but they all disappeared. One
caveat is that paint can't be cracked...

These outfits "massage" the dent in the metal from behind using
variously shaped "spoons" and can "encourage" it back into its
original shape. A vertically mounted fluorescent tub is used to
sight indentations/variations in the surface. Most dealerships
employ a "Dent Doctor" to remove dents on new cars incurred during
shipping.

I recall that a set of these tools was available for about $50.
But, I just Googled "Dent Removal Tools" and a whole bunch of places
are selling them. They are a lot pricier now. I know of a few
people that made their own using some blank round stock, with a
hammer and anvil to shape the tool that they needed.

If it's not the fuses, and that's easily verified with a multimeter
(make sure they're _getting_ juice when they should) then it's got
to be the combination switch on the column. Fairly easy to replace,
but not dirt cheap.

2006-02-05 Thread Rhonald Angelo
EveningI turned my fog lights on tonight on the way back from
erands...and something happened then I was without lights...turn signals
work, park lights work, tail lights fine..I think it is fuses...and the
headlights and fog lights have a separate fuseI checked the manual..for
the box..now which fuse is it?

Re: [MBZ] Bike rider, loud pipes

2006-01-27 Thread Rhonald Angelo
What is really dangerous are the speed bikes..the ones that sound like a
bumblebee...and will appear out of nowhere and in 3 seconds will be 2 miles
in front of you..I have seen these guys weaving in and out of traffic on the
beltway with inches between them and cars...scary...I had always said, I
never knew of a Harley that was in an accident..I can always hear them
coming..I must have missed the original post on this one..I guess if one is
drving something that is louder than a Harley, he would not been seen until
it is too late...for me, if I got a bike it would only be a Harley. An
almost silent bike in the drivers blind spot is not good. Sure, at times
and in places they can be very noisy..but in my experice...most of the guys
are easy on the thottle in certain areas...

"could hear him for about 3/4 of a mile away - he stated that cars"

If that thinking is true let us have every vehicle/truck/car on the roads
have no muffler then we would be really safe and could hear each other
coming.

I had a guy (he looked like a Hun, proally why no one wants to mess with
these guys and question this stuff) in Pennsylvania say the same thing to
me. "It is for safety". But with the recent appealed helmet law he did not
wear a helmet. Yeah he was real concerned about safety!!??

Spade a Spade: No it is about making noise, a power trip and "saying look
at me" and nothing else. It is certainly not about humility, God forbid. I
would get out my decibel meter and ticket everyone of the bastards if I were
a cop for disturbing the peace.

By degree I am a Marine/Mechanical Engineer. On a merchant ship (Navy /
Shore side same way) every piece a machinery we would judge by the level of
sound. Excessive sound and loud sound were ussually a sign of
trouble/danger. Most good mechanical types agree optimal design operation
is as quiet as possible.

Subject: [MBZ] Merry Christmas, Friends

My apologies to Mr. Moore:

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the list
Blockheaters were plugged in...cold weather persists.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that packages from Rusty soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of 240Ds (4 speed, of course) danced in their heads.
And mamma in her 'kerchief and a beautiful corsage,
Knew I was getting ready to go to the garage .

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
It sounded like an OM 617 with something the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
I tripped over a jackstand now I'm bleeding from a gash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Made me think the POS cars in the yard could get up and go.
Then, what to my wondering eyes should I see,
But a perfectly maintained mid-'80s 190D.

With a little old driver, I don't need a sleuth,
I knew in a moment it's Herr Doktor Booth.
More rapid than eagles his advice he dealt out,
And he whistled, and waved, and started to shout!

"Change fluids, change coolant! Changes filters, Change fuses!
Replace all those hoses from which something oozes!
>From the highly waxed roof, to the three pointed star!
Now do these thing, do these thing...take car of your cars!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
Which always seem to end up in your garage, my oh my.
So into the garage Herr Doktor Booth flew,
With a bag full of tools and a timing chain too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the drive
Several other listers who soon had arrived.
I went to the car as quick as I could,
But Herr Doktor Booth was already 'neath the hood.

He was dressed in a coverall , from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with M1 and soot.
A bundle of tools he had flung on his back,
They were so complete..I was taken aback.
He said,"Your engine's so dirty I think I might wretch!
The valves are all wack, look at this chain stretch !

This thing is a wreck, many PMs you have missed
Have you learned nothing in your years on the list?"
.

He was fixing fuel hoses that were all out of kilter,
"I need a hand with this wretched inline filter!".
And then barreling in as if on que,
Were Kaleb, Chris and Casey and the Dons (OK and LT) too !

The work in my garage was making me dizzy,
Everyone was keeping incredibly busy!
Seeing all these good friends from so far away,
Working so hard..made me wish I were...able to serve them frosty brews

They spoke not a word, but went straight to their work,
And torqued everything with the wrench (Nm, of course) with a jerk.
And then waving his hands like the big rappers do,
He said,"Let's roll fellers, our work here is through!"

He sprang to his 190D, all Christmas arrayed ,
And they all piled in like Shriners in a parade.
But I heard him exclaim, as I puffed my Christmas cigar,
"Happy Christmas to all, and TAKE CARE OF YOUR CARS!"

If you've pounded the pavement looking for a clean used Mercedes you can
really appreciate the virtues of ebay, particular when the seemingly PERFECT
car comes along and you can relax and gaze longingly at those beautiful
photos. WIth ebay's far-flung reach, bids from a potentially global array
of potential buyers serve as a better ratification of market value than can
be realized by conventional car selling methodologies (newspaper and
supermarket ads).

Re: [MBZ] Resolved: Sway Bar Bushings on 124 (Clunk)

2005-11-22 Thread Rhonald Angelo
John, I had the same issue in the back with 123 sway bar bushings..I could
not believe little plastic things worn could result in such noises. I think
my cotrol arms are due for replacement, it drives fine but as you say, when
riding over bumps..at slower speeds..the front wheels feel...wobbly, not
really a clunk but kind a rumble or sorts for lack of better words. The
ball joints, bushings, tie rods have been replaced. The control arm on the
right was sqeaking at one time, but it stopped and never returned.

I have to agree with you...I bought my '300D in 2000, and this list has been
invaluable to me. Where on earth would I have learned what I have learned?
I think the ultimate for me would be if Doctor Booth inspected my car. WOW!
Kudos Marchall. I am actually adding a guy later today...he has two..a
'86 300SDL and a 560SL. I keep telling him, and others to connect and
informed. Everyonethanks for all the knowlege..past..present and
future. Happy Thanksgiving!

It looks like it's in very nice shape (it IS leather). If everything
really IS okay $10k is a fair price. The mention of blue smoke when cold
(white yes - blue no) is worrisome. The transmission being sealed is
good (I had my 300TD sealed at about 130kmi), but Stu Ritter says they
are worn out by 150kmi (in Denver). They tend to last more like 250kmi
on average in Pittsburgh.

Hi, make it three! I don't own one either..my eyes are first focused on the

rang...pow! Right into the back of someone's car. Thankfully, he was not
going that fast. When are these people going to learn?

There are OFTEN mid model year revisions. Sometimes it requires the VIN
number to be sure (and that isn't always foolproof) and many of the
smallest changes aren't included in ANY service literature.

Hey Kaleb, I have the original sticker for my 85 300 D, and it shows a

work any longer, I open the door before turning the key to open the drivers

It was an option in Euro cars, but I didn't know it was available in the
US (it was in 126s).

Some '84-'85 OM617.95 engines with Garrett turbos (NOT KKKs) made a
whistling noise that can only be repaired by changing the turbo (TSB
09/4 dated 11/85) or replacing several perts of the turbo. Mercedes
offered a kit for a few years (only available with a core to return - as
the major part in the kit was manufactured from returned original parts)
containing the parts to correct the offending turbo (917 090 00 99).
Modification of the turbo parts required services of a very well
equipped machine shop and a very good machinist. Mercedes did not expect
service facilities to perform the modification so supplied the kit -
until the early '90s I believe.

On OM60x.96 turbos and all other OM617.95 turbos, a whistle is caused by
a leak in the turbo or exhaust system (including the EGR) somewhere.

Diesel Won't Solve Our Gasoline Woes

By Michael D. Tusiani

Monday, August 8, 2005; Page A15 Washington Post

Automakers are eager to sell you a diesel-powered vehicle. One of their
responses to the rising price of gasoline has been to tell American
motorists they can keep their large, powerful vehicles and at the same
time save on fuel by buying a car or truck that burns diesel instead of
gasoline. The new energy bill establishes a tax credit as large as
$3,400 for diesels, matching the break allowed for hybrids.

Diesel-fueled vehicles do afford somewhat better mileage and may not
require as much maintenance as gasoline-burners. But now and for years
to come, the U.S. refining industry simply cannot produce enough diesel
fuel to accommodate a significant increase in the number of vehicles
that burn it.

At this year's auto show in New York, a DaimlerChrysler executive
responsible for research and technology cited the success of
diesel-engine automobiles in Europe while suggesting that these vehicles
could gain a 5 to 10 percent share of the U.S. market. He made those
comments at the introduction of a Mercedes-Benz station wagon scheduled
to land in America in 2006. He did not mention, however, that because of
the popularity of diesel-powered autos, diesel oil prices in Europe are
soaring as demand pushes past the amount refiners can make.

European governments, working with automakers, have persuaded their
citizens to replace gasoline-powered cars with diesel. They set tax
rates to render diesel fuel cheaper than gasoline. But oil companies had
no reason to invest in additional equipment for diesel production.
Demand for diesel therefore bumps against the limit of supply. The
marketplace will remedy such a situation, but it will be slow (because
building new refining equipment takes time) and painful (because
high-cost fuel hurts the financially weak the most).

Refineries can be equipped to make either a high yield of diesel or a
high yield of gasoline, but not both. European refiners built their
equipment before governments started manipulating the fuel market. To
date, they have declined to scrap money-making gasoline production units
worth many billions of dollars and replace them with even more expensive
diesel hardware. But the market flirts with inducing such reinvestment.
On a pretax basis, diesel has become much more expensive than gasoline
in Europe. In five years European refineries may complete the
construction of equipment to significantly increase diesel oil output.
But in the meantime, Europe will have to import ever larger quantities
of diesel -- that is, if it can find supply. Europe has raised its
diesel quality standards to such a high level that very few refineries
in other parts of the world can manufacture an acceptable product.
Interestingly, the United States can. During a few months last winter,
U.S. refiners quietly shipped diesel to Europe. Due to our own demand,
that could not continue.

These exports undoubtedly raised U.S. prices while they lasted. In this
country, we burn diesel mostly for commercial transportation. As our
economy expands, we will need more fuel for trucks and locomotives to
transport goods. In 2004 trucks and other diesel-burning vehicles
required about 150,000 barrels per day more than in 2003 -- a one-year
increase of almost 5 percent. If America continues to prosper, this
commercial use of diesel will keep growing. Like their European
counterparts, U.S. refiners have not seen any reason to invest in
greater diesel production. In fact, they have a strong disincentive to
build diesel-making equipment: Unless refiners can increase crude oil
processing capacity, which seems unlikely, making more diesel will
reduce gasoline production. Furthermore, they have gasoline production
hardware that has only recently started to make solid profits for them
as the price of gasoline rises.

For diesel-powered autos and light trucks to achieve a market share of 5
to 10 percent, American motorists must be compelled to buy 800,000 to
1.7 million of them per year. We do not have the spare diesel production
capacity to cope with the additional demand that would produce, and we
will not have it for quite some time.

Give U.S. refiners about 10 years and they might significantly increase
diesel production capacity. It would take about that long to plan new
projects and run the regulatory and litigation gantlet. Until then, a
motorist buying one will have to compete for expensive diesel fuel in an
increasingly tight market. In the meantime, diesels do not increase
American motorists' practical choices. If the energy
