I read somewhere the US housings are plastic - and cannot take the heat
of higher output bulbs found on euro cars which have metal headlight
housings. Does that sound right?

I think the plastic housing is a limitation, but the main limitation is
the *horrible* optics of the US headlights. If you put in a brighter
bulb, you'll do nothing but blind oncoming drivers. The euro headlights
have a sharp cutoff pattern so you won't blind anyone.

Here's what I found on ebay - item 400032189812 which supposedly shows
the US and Euro side-by-side.

Looks to me like they are just different action shots of the euros...

Re: [MBZ] European Headlights

Hi John -
Thx for that info. You lights do look much better and no doubt
perform better also. I went to the next photo and saw the lower
bumper damaged. My was similar - looked like the little door for
the tow hook was ripped out. Bought a new one and black insert for
~$150 IIRC and painted it - the match was perfect (on the 3rd try)
;-) but now it looks like the factory did it.

The bumper I bought was no doubt an aftermarket one as the ones
Rusty sells are over $400 I believe. But it looks really good.

Thx agn for the info and photos - I'm going to have to spring for
some of these soon. My wife drives home at 8PM 2 days a week so
good headlights would be welcomed.

Re: [MBZ] European Headlights

2009-02-23 Thread LarryT
Thanks to all who replied - I hadn't considered the difference in
RHD Vs LHD light pattern - I remember well watching videos of
european 911s driving in UK with bits of black tape on the headlight
lens to modify the pattern. I should have known.

Anyway - I was thinking about a pair of european headlights for my
1991 300D W124. Although they look better I believe the lights
provide better lighting also.

What's needed probably is the european metal headlight unit so
higher wattage bulbs can be used and not melt the plastic used in
the US units.

But I'll sure you are right about any UK wrecker with some RHD
headlights will likely almost give them away.

Any list members in UK want to find some inexpensive HLs for me? ;-)

Thx agn -

Speaking of European headlights, I just retrofitted my C140 (S500
coupe)
with a brand new pair of European OEM Bosch Xenon headlight units.
With the
help of WIS and a little ingenuity, I now have probably the best
upgrade I
have ever done; that includes the W126 Bosch euros I installed in
my 300SDL.

Overall, it was a fairly easy install and the city light hookup
was similar
to that of other European headlights. The one downside is that the
city
light bulbs (W5W) still give off that yellow glow even with the
Xenon's on.
In an effort not to look ricey, I will probably have to live with
it;
although I do have a pair of Philips BlueVision W5W bulbs on the
way from
the UK. Hopefully they are tasteful and pure white but if they
look even the
slightest bit blue, I will keep the original W5W bulb in. I know
the whole
blue tint argument, but these are 5W city lights we are talking
about so I'm

hardly worried about lumen output.

On the subject of comparing European headlights in a RHD vehicle
versus LHD,
the only difference in the two units is the lens. The refractory
pattern on

the glass is different for the aforementioned setups. For European
headlights on a W123, W124 or W126, the lenses are fairly cheap
compared to
a W140 or C140. If you can get the headlight units for a steal, it
still may

be worth buying them and changing the lens.

On another note, if anyone needs a complete W126 headlight switch
bezel with
vacuum adjuster switch, I have two available. It definitely
compliments the
complete W126 European headlight setup and is great when actually
used for

the level adjustment.

I also have 3 European warning triangle brackets available for the
W126 and

3 available for all other models (W123, W124, W140, etc.)

Inquire for prices.

OK, that problem solved - what I was thinking, maybe I could by a

shipped
here? After seeing prices around the US a set runs around $300
or
more. They must have plenty of these in UK - as long as shipping
is

acceptable maybe I can get a set and save some $$s.

If a wrecker in the British Isles has a car with LHD headlamps,
I'm sure

they'd
be glad to get rid of them. (or maybe they just sell them to the
French and

Germans)

They definitely look better and have a MUCH better beam pattern! Since
the US beam pattern is so horrible, I wouldn't worry about spending the
$500 for a pair of proper Bosch or Hella euro headlights from Rusty.
Instead, check out eBay and get TYC or Depo brand headlights. They are
probably 90% of the headlight, but at 50% the price. I have the ones

They definitely look better and have a MUCH better beam pattern! Since
the US beam pattern is so horrible, I wouldn't worry about spending the $500

check out eBay and get TYC or Depo brand headlights. They are probably 90%

Rusty wrote business sucks

No kidding - it's like that all around I fear - at least it is for
me. This must be the change so many voted for. Anyway, I'm sure
$450 is a great price for some great headlights - but when I compare
them to the ones John recommended at $225 it would be hard to
justify spending $450.

But for me, I think I'll hold on to both my $225 the $450 for the
time being. Maybe I'll get a bailout?

What what I can tell, the Euro lights don't look much different from

I read somewhere the US housings are plastic - and cannot take the

2009-02-23 Thread Peter Frederick
I will second that -- the DEPOs I got for my old 300D were a vast
improvment over the DOT ones. Might even have been able to avoid the
damned wood rodent that caused me to get new headlights in the first
place.

May not last as long or be as sturdy as Hella or Bosch, but they work
just fine and have the level adjuster if you want to go to the
trouble of getting the replacement bezel for the headlight switch and
adjuster wheel and running some vac lines.

Re: [MBZ] European Headlights

2009-02-23 Thread Peter Frederick
Don't look anything alike at all at closer than quick glance. On the
W124 (and W018 at least, probably everything else too) there is a one
piece glass cover for the entire assembly, not a headlight with a
plastic ring around it. The reflector is different, giving much more
light spread on the road directly in front of the bumper and there is
a dead zone in the beam to the upper left, where oncoming traffic
is. Far better distance illumination on high beams, but again there
is a dark zone on the upper left to avoid glare into the eyes of
drivers going the other way.

All round much better. Note that 94 or 95 W124's came with Euro
lenses on some models, and these are highly desirable since the
headlight wipers work. Can't use the DOT headlight wipers on the Euro
assemblies, as they are on the opposite side and rotate the other
direction.

OK, that problem solved - what I was thinking, maybe I could by a
set of headlights from a wrecker in UK for instance and have them

Anyone try something like that? I imported MG parts from UK in the

If a wrecker in the British Isles has a car with LHD headlamps, I'm sure they'd
be glad to get rid of them. (or maybe they just sell them to the French and Germans)

Re: [MBZ] European Headlights

2009-02-22 Thread TE
Speaking of European headlights, I just retrofitted my C140 (S500 coupe)
with a brand new pair of European OEM Bosch Xenon headlight units. With the
help of WIS and a little ingenuity, I now have probably the best upgrade I
have ever done; that includes the W126 Bosch euros I installed in my 300SDL.

Overall, it was a fairly easy install and the city light hookup was similar
to that of other European headlights. The one downside is that the city
light bulbs (W5W) still give off that yellow glow even with the Xenon's on.
In an effort not to look ricey, I will probably have to live with it;
although I do have a pair of Philips BlueVision W5W bulbs on the way from
the UK. Hopefully they are tasteful and pure white but if they look even the
slightest bit blue, I will keep the original W5W bulb in. I know the whole
blue tint argument, but these are 5W city lights we are talking about so I'm
hardly worried about lumen output.

On the subject of comparing European headlights in a RHD vehicle versus LHD,
the only difference in the two units is the lens. The refractory pattern on
the glass is different for the aforementioned setups. For European
headlights on a W123, W124 or W126, the lenses are fairly cheap compared to
a W140 or C140. If you can get the headlight units for a steal, it still may
be worth buying them and changing the lens.

On another note, if anyone needs a complete W126 headlight switch bezel with
vacuum adjuster switch, I have two available. It definitely compliments the
complete W126 European headlight setup and is great when actually used for
the level adjustment.

I also have 3 European warning triangle brackets available for the W126 and
3 available for all other models (W123, W124, W140, etc.)

Inquire for prices.

OK, that problem solved - what I was thinking, maybe I could by a set of
headlights from a wrecker in UK for instance and have them shipped
here? After seeing prices around the US a set runs around $300 or
more. They must have plenty of these in UK - as long as shipping is
acceptable maybe I can get a set and save some $$s.

If a wrecker in the British Isles has a car with LHD headlamps, I'm sure
they'd
be glad to get rid of them. (or maybe they just sell them to the French and
Germans)

Re: [MBZ] European Headlights

2009-02-17 Thread LarryT
Thx TE. The Porsche 911 owners manual explains how to align headlights
using a flat surface and some tape ;-)

As far as DOT - I had some lights in a car that a PO had installed some kind
of high intensity blue lights - the state inspector said without the
alignment nubs he wouldn't pass it. Likely another inspector would have
checked to see if they worked and went on but this guy caught it.

Perhaps the Euro lights won't look so odd?

Thx agn -

Inspection shouldn't be a problem. All they look for is to see if they
work,
not DOT markings on the glass. Aiming will have to be done manually, but
the

directions in WIS or on Daniel Stern's lighting page should suffice. (not
sure of the link).

I am considering Euro headlights for my 91 300D - but I worry about them
not

having the DOT alignment bumps for the US alignent machines. I'm sure I
can

align the lights the old fashioned way - a flat wall, some tape and a
darkened garage. But I worry about passing the state inspections.

Anyone know?

Larry,

I put them on my '92 and haven't had any issues with inspection, and PA is
somewhat more difficult compared to VA. When in Charlottesville I saw a
few W124s with euros.

I wouldn't worry about it since a lot of newer cars have a similar beam
pattern. For example, my CDI has a euro beam pattern.
