Re: [MBZ] 617 Fuel Filter Bolt

2016-02-24 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I found the right parts page:
http://www.mbpartsworld.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_assembly=1082553_make=1103_model=16073=1982_category=24396_trimLevel=20574
The bolt in question is item #38. They only show one available seal ring (#41)
so I have to conclude that my old TD had some kind of special bolt or that the
old-style hollow bolt was replaced with a simpler design at some point.

Re: [MBZ] 617 Fuel Filter Bolt

2016-02-23 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Dan, Thanks for your offer but I believe current-inventory bolts are just like
the one I have now. Somehow I missed your link to the parts diagram. Sorry
'bout that. I'm not sure that diagram shows this specific bolt but it is the
one in the center of the bracket that holds the "spin-on" type fuel filter.

Here's a photo: http://kioti.dyndns.org/bolt.JPG

You may note deformation of the bolt head from excessive torque needed to get
that metal washer to seal. In the past I had a '79 300TD and the same bolt in
that car had an additional groove and O-ring that made a perfect seal with the
bracket every time without excessive torque on the bolt. I wish (now) that I
had swapped bolts before I sold that car.

The thing I was curious about was (1) did my 79 have some after-market bolt or
was it a MBZ design change to eliminate the O-ring in favor of the aluminum
washer? And (2) was it possible to scavenge (or buy) an old-style bolt with
the O-ring that seals with the bracket.

I don't plan to remove my current new-style bolt until I must, because it's
such a pain to reseal. That will probably won't happen until my current filter
rusts through. I am mostly curious if others have this problem and if they
have solved it. This is a very small (but vexing) thing in the grand scheme.

You can usually get packages of aluminum or copper washers of various
sizes at a FLAPS intended for oil drain plugs.
That might at least provide a temporary solution unless the washer in
question is something special.

If I buy an oil filter from the local Honda dealer for my wife's car, it
always comes with a new aluminum washer.

Thats true, I do it on old lantern parts often.
However the washer in question is aluminum. ;)

Yeah. You anneal copper exactly opposite how you anneal
steel. Heat and then quench cool quickly for copper.

I know what you’re describing, as my 1982 300SD had the same thing. Is it
possible to “re-anneal” the washer? Didn’t someone describe how to do this a

Look at this drawing and tell me which one it is. I can check and see if my

Re: [MBZ] 617 Fuel Filter Bolt

2016-02-19 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
If it comes with the hollow bolt with the extra O-ring (that seals at the
housing), I'd be interested. Otherwise, I'll just look for a better/new
washer next time I need to mess with it.

What I find odd is the bolt in my '79 617 (with the additional O-ring)
always sealed perfectly without excessive torque but the "newer" design in
my '82 required mucho torque (and several attempts) to stop leaking.

Regardless, thanks for the offer.

I think the real problem is the aluminum washers for the bolt. I tried a few on
my 617s and had to really crank the bolt to stop "seeping" fuel. I returned to
the copper washers and they seal much better with no seeping problems. I guess
the aluminum are cheaper, but more of a potential headache. I got the last ones
I have somewhere on eBay. My Indie also has them, never asked where he gets
them.

Maybe try a new washer, or I can snag you a new filter and housing
with the bolt in the morning. (for a few bucks) Or I can send you

The banjo bolts do stretch. This is a big problem on the auto trans
cooler lines.

This is about the hollow bolt that holds the Diesel secondary fuel filter to
the bracket. On my old '79 300TD (non turbo), this bolt had an O-ring that

Some filters include a new washer but if I'm honest I haven't seen one in
years. A copper washer would do the same job and would be easy to anneal when
it stopped sealing. Dunno where you'd buy such a thing other than McMaster
