It has two engines that will cost around $40-50K each to overhaul, complex
landing gear system - a friend just spent over $1000 replacing the aged out
hoses in the retractable gear system of his Cessna 210.
Twins are considerably cheaper to buy than singles since most know how much
MORE expensive they are to maintain and operate.

I have many years of first hand experience of driving a 123 240D versus
a 115 240D and the 115 version is much more peppy in auto form than the
123 version.  My first experience with driving MB was my grandmothers 76
240D auto (which is sitting in out in the shop).  My first car I owned
myself was a 79 240D auto.  I always thought there was something wrong
with it because it was so much slower than the 115.

I did the direct mail order thing. Sometimes they will give a discount.

Btw, all I could afford at the time was a model 20...

But then it didn't have an issue picking up the front end of a 1/2t RWD 'burb

My only complaint is that it definitely takes more strength to jack with it
than it does with other jacks... But then you can choose to lower things very

I ask because I may be interested, and I saw they have a local rep in Tampa.

There are spots to grease all of the wheels, and it rolls silkily! (I've had
it for several years, and it works as well as the day that I got it)

It wasn't cheap, but then having a car drop isn't cheap either... (I always
use jack stands and/or cribbing, so I'm not depending on a jack to keep the
 car up...)

Jon,
The Craftsman jacks actually don't have the best reputation. Look at the
reviews. They are prone to leaks.
I would consider a Harbor Freight aluminum 2 or 2.5 ton or a Harbor Freight low
profile steel jack. The Costco Arcan jacks are also considered good.

If you want to splurge you can get a Hein Warner American made jack but it'll
be expensive as would be the Griot's Garage jack.

I have a 3 ton Crapsman floor jack that was great until about 2-3 years ago
(it's probably 10 years old).

It doesn't leak externally, but it does leak down in a matter of a minute or
two if it's under load. It also takes a lot of effort and pumping to get it to
raise under a load.

I suspect it's leaking internally.

The sad part is that it hasn't been used all that much.

If you want all that stuff, see what it would cost at Harbor Freight.

Chinese ratchet stands are worth what, $20 a pair?
Chinese lowboy creeper maybe $30?
Chinese 19 lift jack probably $50-60. I paid $40 for mine on sale at HF in the
1990s, still works fine, but I'm always careful not to overtighten the valve and
don't loan out hydraulic jacks to anybody.

We have a crapsman floor jack at work for moving equipment, and it is
a complete POS killer. I don't trust it with anything, and I sure
would never jack up a car with it. It goes up ok, but when you try
to let things down, it just crashes down. When we are moving equip
that needs a jack, I bring mine in from home. I don't want to get
someone injured or worse using the crapsman.

I have a taiwanese farm store jack that is almost 20 years old, and
one from HF (chinee) that is under 10 years old, and they are
virtually identical. Both have relatively high lift, are heavy and
are built for shop service. Unfortunately HF does not sell this jack
anymore. But I would trust a HF jack more than a crapsman. Snears
just sells too much overpriced junk

If you catch the sales, you can get a creeper, jackstands and a jack
for $100 at HF.

27 MPG is not far from reality for a OM617. At least he's not claiming 45 like
some folks do.

Hard starting could just be glow plugs or a long-overdue valve adjustment.

It could be a POS, but it could be a good driver-in-the-rough too.

'93 300D less than 200k miles, $4900. Seems like thats a great deal.

Seems like I ought to go check it out.

Only if the AC is working -- otherwise it's just a good deal. They
get 32-36 mpg on the highway.

Usual W124 caveats apply (in other words, it's due for tie rods, ball
joints, and drag link plus steering damper, and the rear links will
be dead soon, too.)
