Re: [MBZ] Boston Marathon bombs: the early theories

2013-04-17 Thread Gerry Archer

While pressure cooker controls would be helpful, their complete elimination
would be more effective. Few people other than food faddists use them
anymore, so their disappearance would hardly be noticed.

Since these types of amateur bombs are nearly always a mixture of diesel
fuel and fertilizer, banning these two noxious substances as well as
pressure cookers should completely eliminate homegrown terrorism.

Think of all the benefits the banning of diesel fuel would provide.

Thousands of marriages would be saved since diesel widows would no longer
spend their weekends sitting in front of the TV while their husbands worked
on their diesel cars or sat at the computer discussing the merits of various
lubricants.

Replacing manufactured fertilizer with natural fertilizer (from horses and
mules) could easily be accomplished since horses and mules would have
already replaced diesel farm machinery.

The nation would return to a simpler and more natural way of life for which
many of us yearn.

[MBZ] Boston Marathon bombs: the early theories

2013-04-16 Thread Gerry Archer

Investigators and experts in terrorism are following two main early theories
about who might be behind the Boston bombings.

The first is that domestic right-wing extremists were responsible. The
second is that Islamists, either foreign or American, and linked to al-Qaeda
spiritually or practically, were to blame. A third possibility is killers
with no ideological agenda whatsoever.
President Barack Obama, in a statement from the White House on Tuesday
afternoon, said: We do not know whether this was an act of an organisation,
foreign or domestic, or a malevolent individual, or individuals.
He added: We don't have a sense of motive yet.
Bill Bratton, a former head of Boston police who is now based in London,
said there are no shortage of potential suspects behind the explosions.

Supporters of the right-wing theory point to the timing of the attack. April
15 is tax day in the United States, when the whole nation is expected to
file tax returns. It is an ominous day in the calendar for anti-government,
anti-tax activists.
It is shortly before the anniversaries of two other terrorist attacks, the
Oklahoma City bombing on April 19 and the Columbine High School shooting on
April 20. Some terror experts have speculated that right-wingers could have
seen the Boston marathon as a liberal, multicultural bonanza somehow worthy
of targeting.

There has also been huge growth in the number of anti-government Patriot
groups during Barack Obama's presidency. The Southern Poverty Law Centre,
which monitors hate groups, reported last month that because of the prospect
of gun-control legislation, the threat of violence appears to be looming.

The SPLC said that the number of Patriot groups reached record levels in
2012 and had grown by 813 percent over the past four years.

Monday was also Patriots' Day in Massachusetts, a public holiday
commemorating the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord in
1775, the first battles of the war of independence, which would be cause for
celebration for such groups.

Patriots' Day has been a lightening rod for extreme anti-government
activists. They see Patriots' Day as hijacked by the government and that its
values are debased said Bruce Hoffman, director of the centre for security
studies at Georgetown University.
He added: From people I've been speaking to in law enforcement, the gut
feeling is this seems more anti-government domestic extremists, but everyone
has got these things wrong before, he said.

In the immediate aftermath of the Oklahama bombing, it was assumed to be the
work of jihadists but right-wing terrorist Timothy McVeigh turned out to be
responsible for the worst act of terror in America pre-September 11, 2001.
The Gulf War veteran and militia movement member claimed to be seeking
revenge against the federal government for its handling of the Waco Siege in
Texas.

Working against the domestic terror theory is that fact that such attackers
have tended to choose targets relevant to their ideology, such as a federal
building or tax office. But the marathon could have been selected as a
maximum attention event.

Peter Neumann, professor of security studies at King's College, London, said
most of the discussion was currently focussed on the choice of target and
the modus operandi.
Islamist terrorists, who have been foiled in numerous plots against New
York, may have thought Boston an easier target.
Some groups used a particular kind of attack. With the IRA it was car
bombs. With al-Qaeda it has almost become a cliché but multiple explosions
in the same place are regarded as hallmarks of Islamist terror, he said.

The crude explosives used, he said, gave little clue, suggesting amateurish
right-wing, or amateurish al-Qaeda.
A bomb with ball bearing seems home made, the type of thing you would build
if you don't really know how to build a bomb, perhaps with some instructions
or guide on the Internet, he said.
Explosives with ball bearings have however been used often by insurgents in
Iraq and Afghanistan, which would add weight to the Islamist theory.

Apart from the modus operandi and target, investigators and researchers in
terrorism will be looking for online boasts or claims of responsibility from
those involved, or those linked to the bombers.
The point of terrorism is to communicate a message through acts of
violence. The IRA used to call a newspaper, and now you often have claims on
the Internet, said Prof Neumann.
So far, he said, there have been no such claims, deepening the likelihood
that the culprit(s) was either acting alone, or part of a small group
loosely connected to a bigger ideology or network.
The silence could also be explained if the police have already got their
man, through camera surveillance and eyewitnesses.

Whatever the attackers' view of the world, they could well have been local,
said Juliette Kayyem, a lecturer at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
She told the Boston Globe: It is probably home-grown, someone with a
political

That part may be fact based.

When the reporter starts quoting Mark Potok's 'research' for the SPLC to fill in
the missing details, that's when the article becomes entirely laughable. Always
a potential problem when somebody on the other side of an ocean tries to tell us

The lies that Potok spreads to keep the federal grants rolling in are what's

Re: [MBZ] Boston Marathon bombs: the early theories

2013-04-16 Thread Mitch Haley
A former militant communist says it looked like a gunpowder bomb (like a pipe
bomb but bigger):
I've been waiting for someone to claim responsibility for this evil
madness. Various jihadi groups have disclaimed it, and the use of what appeared
to be smallish, simple devices of ball bearings and what from the plume seemed
to be a gunpowder burster is not their style, although the target certainly was
-- a gathering of innocents making a suitable body count.

CBS News says:

A law enforcement source told CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton
that one of the explosive devices appears to have been placed in a metal
pressure cooker (a metal kitchen pot with a locked down top) which had been
placed in a black nylon bag or backpack. Investigators also found pieces of an
electronic circuit board possibly indicating a timer was used in the detonation
of the bomb.

A law enforcement official told CBS News that the two bombs that exploded were
made to look like discarded property. It is still unknown if one or both bombs
were in garbage cans. One may have been on the sidewalk.

The bombs were described as low explosive, but with anti-personnel packing.
The official said there were apparently things like BB's, ball bearings and
nails in the bombs. This is consistent with doctors reporting shrapnel pulled
from victims.

I am thinking this would just be common sense. It could very easily be
appended to the gun control legislation, and could protect us from this
kind of bombing. Maybe we could get Elizabeth Warren, the new senator
from Mass, to sponsor this? If we all sent her an email I am sure she
would respond.

Excellent advice, we'll introduce that common sense idea into the debate.

Have you heard if the president has consulted with his good friends who
are very knowledgeable about domestic terrorism, bombs, and such -- Bill
and Bernadine? They might be able to provide some insight into these
events.

I am leading toward the hypothesis advanced by that noted legislative
intellect, (Queen) Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-Imwit, a part of Houston), who
blames the sakester on the bombing. I'm pretty sure she hit the nail on
the head.

Media Blames Republicans, 'Tax Day,' Saudi Man for Bombing
Politically-motivated speculation is rampant. Boston police say no suspects are
in custody

16 hrs ago by Mary Noble

Today witnessed some striking examples of a long-standing American tradition:
groundless political speculation from the media following a terrorist attack.

Chris Matthews suggested a tax day tie-in, implying that perhaps
anti-government could be the motive for the bombings.

The explosion is a reminder that ATF needs a director. Shame on Senate
Republicans for blocking apptment, tweeted the NYTimes's Nicholas Christof.
He's since retracted.

Meanwhile Alex Jones of the right-wing site Infowars suggested the government
might be responsible: Our hearts go out to those that are hurt or killed
#Boston marathon - but this thing stinks to high heaven #falseflag.

The NY Post's report that a Saudi national is being held under guard at a
hospital came under fire from the Washington Post. However, the Saudi in
hospital story has a good deal more credibility than speculations about
right-wing extremists. CBS is also reporting that a Saudi man is being
questioned, and Politico independently reports that a person of interest, a
foreigner, is being treated at Tufts Medical Center. The NY Post is sticking to
their story, which is still live and unchanged on their site.

More questionably, the Daily Caller has attached a photo montage of the 9/11
hijackers to their story, presumably to remind readers how deadly Saudis can be.

Boston police have denied several times today that any suspect is in custody or
under guard.

CNN has drawn ire because one of their experts speculated that right-wing
extremists could be behind the Boston explosions - but in fact the expert gave
equal weight to the possibility of Al Qaeda involvement.
