Re: [MBZ] GL Adventure

2023-02-22 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
It seemed to be a bit of tail wag dog although I thought I had the load
distributed ok. Not too bad but I could feel some instability. The ML doesn’t
feel that way when I tow cars with it so maybe the longer wheelbase or
something. I don’t know if it has a built-in brake controller or not but I did
notice the light on the brake box on the trailer was on when I got home (was
getting dark) so maybe it does have one in the system. I’ll have to look into
that more. That would be good. I’ll look at the brake rotors and see if they
were worn down any.

Hot fluid goes to the input of both X-valves. Cold gas comes back.
If the line's not cold coming back, fluid's not flowing. A clogged X-valve
is one of the more likely causes.

I would replace the expansion valve.

For the stud, get a screw of the right threads and length, cut off the

valve.

I would also replace the rear expansion valve.

Re: [MBZ] GL bumper

2022-08-05 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
In that case, modify my previous post to say... Find a plastic welder...
I could not determine from the pic what it was.. sorry.
Plastic can be successfully welded and that could save you both time and
money. Since I learned how to weld plastic, I find I'm repairing all kinds
of things that would be expensive scrap.

[MBZ] GL front bumper replacement

2022-02-28 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Looking like it the other guy's insurance will be paying.  Will get
estimates but I am sure it being a X164 it will be expensive.  Goal will
be to get check from insurance then fix it myself for 1/4 the price.
Not seeing a lot of used white bumpers in car-part, but see rock auto
has cheap primered bumper covers.  This one has parktronic and headlight
washers.  They have bumpers with one or the other for $120, but with
both is $450.  Thinking about deleting the washers, does anybody really
care about that?  Then would require painting at a body shop (or maybe I
buy a spray gun and do it myself).

Re: [MBZ] GL fuel tank capacity

2022-02-06 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
My kids did that constantly. So annoying to go out to the car, needing to get
somewhere, and find the "low fuel" light on. Worse because the closest fuel
station is also one of the most expensive in the area.

The usual justifcation was "well the computer says 20 miles until empty" so
there was enough gas to get back to the station. I told them when they were
stranded with a burned-out fuel pump they were on the hook for the towing and
the repairs. Fortunately (?) it never happened.

battery tested bad, so I replaced it with a new AGM battery. It seemed
to turn over faster the other day but still not as fast as I figure it
should. Starter still drawing about 300 amps. Yesterday the wife left
and it was probably around 20 outside. She said it cycled thru 2
keyless go starts but timed out. Took the button out and used key and
started it. Earlier today with it around 30 outside, she left, and it
turned over very slowly with first cycle before timing out. 2nd cycle
it finally started. I am thinking I am probably going to have to go
ahead with the starter replacement anyway. As mentioned before, I can't
really even see it from above, or below while its on the lift. Looking
at the procedure in WIS it basically appears as if you have to get it up
on the lift, support engine with engine support fixture (which I don't
have), remove engine mount and engine mount arm? This is going to be a
 whore of a job. Jono?

if you think they might be getting slow in the future, you have a reference
number. Hmmm - I did that for the airplane, I'll go and do it for the car

Re: [MBZ] GL 642 starter

2022-01-21 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
On my Volvo XC90 the battery is in the very back of the car, under the floor
just in front of the tailgate. Even with a brand new battery I think the
starter sounds slower than what I am used to in other cars. I think part of it
is that with only 12V and a 10 foot distance (maybe more, allowing for routing
of the cable) you're just going to have some losses unless your cabling is the
size of a garden hose.

It would basically be impossible.  The starter would have to be removed
and readjusted (pointed down) to get at the connections on the starter
to check or remove.  Battery is inside the car so I guess you could do
it with a super long cable assuming you could somehow get to the starter
connections.

There are at least three high-current cables involved, and all
should be tested for voltage drop while starting:

Bat+ to starter
Bat- to frame
Frame to engine

You can do it with two tests:

Bat+ (center post) to bolt end on starter
Bat- (center post) to engine block

You'll almost certainly need more than one set
of hands to do these tests correctly. Hint: none
of the contacts you make with the meter should
be to any part of any cables in question.

You need a fast-reading meter, one that can track
voltage fluctuations well. An old-school analog
meter is ideal, but a Fluke (with its analog auxiliary
scale) will do.

If you're losing anywhere near a volt in any of the
cabling, that's way too much.

[MBZ] GL 642 starter

2022-01-21 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
So you all recall I did some testing due to car turning over slow.  I
had figured it was time for a replacement starter but the 2 year old
battery tested bad, so I replaced it with a new AGM battery.  It seemed
to turn over faster the other day but still not as fast as I figure it
Jono?

of his "work" on this GL.

On the ex Hoovie GL if the car sits for 3-4 days or so without being started
battery is too low to start. I am checking amp draw right now and pic is what I
am getting after everything shuts down. Is this normal or too high for one of
these? Seems like it should be something like .05 but not sure I recall. With
this car it’s got something like 3-4 fuse boxes so it seems like it could be
hard to narrow down

0.01 = 1/100 of an amp, that is acceptable and sounds like normal. 0.06 is
also not too bad.

Sure hope this isn't "fixing" itself while you are looking. Follow Jim's
advice, put some remote measuring device on it so you can close up all the
doors and hood, and then let it sit for awhile to see if it goes away.
Probably need to start the car up and drive it around, then park and leave
it alone to see what happens.

I finished doing the rear fuse box. I’m in the back with all doors closed
lights off and let it settle down a few minutes first. I never came up with any
conclusions. After a while it would drop to .06 and stay there a while. It’s
now down to .01. I am thinking .06 to .01 is probably about normal. The battery
has a date of 12/20, is it possible it’s already going bad? Dead battery aside
it always seemed to me like it turns over slower than it should like it would
with a old weak battery. I supposed I could replace it and see what happens. I
did however load test it and it tested just fine.

SWMBO's Infiniti has an alarm system that stays on high alert if anything
is open, like the trunk or hood. I was diagnosing a high current drain,
decided to ask online in a forum before I spent hours pulling fuses, and
got an immediate answer to close all the doors and trunk and then tape down
the hood switch so the alarm system thought the hood was closed, and THEN
check the current draw. It was normal.

Yes, dynamic behavior makes the chase all the more fun. A likely better first
pass would be to instrument the battery feed, close up the car and let it go to
sleep, then start pulling fuses until the load drops off. Then narrow it down
to what's on that circuit, etc.

Dig online first, figure out what the common reasons are, and try those.
You may get lucky. Maybe some computer somewhere thinks it needs to keep
working day and night. Radio amp staying on, or something easy like that.

Would be nice if someone made a meter adapter for those blade fuses, so you
could pull a fuse, stick the adapter in the slot, and immediately see if
that circuit is the culprit. What would be really madenning would be a
fault such that pulling the fuse will cure the fault, so when you try to
measure the draw on that fuse location, you get a normal (probably zero)
reading.

Did you see if there are any codes from any of the various systems?

[MBZ] GL transfer case

2014-05-04 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I curse the person who came up with the driveshaft connection on these
things. It's easy to get to, but impossible to get the rear drive shaft
to clear the transfer case. I buggered but the end cap that holds the
grease in when removing it. Got it bend sort of straight and was able to
get it back on the driveshaft. Anyway, I got a used care off eBay out of
a 09 GL with 70k miles. When it arrived it looked almost brand new. Got
it wrestled back into place, ended up having to drop the drive shaft
center support mount to get just enough slack to get the shaft back
connected to the case. Got it all put back together and took it for a
drive. No more bad grinding/rattling under acceleration. I was worried I
was going to pick up some drive shaft vibration but I took it up to 60
and seems smooth. I sure as hell do not get why they changed to these
star type bolts, thru just seem cheap to me plus I had to get a new set
of sockets for these. Now on to the next project. I have a good
feeling this was what was wrong with Wilts sons car.

in when removing it. Got it bend sort of straight and was able to get it
back on the driveshaft. Anyway, I got a used care off eBay out of a 09 GL
with 70k miles. When it arrived it looked almost brand new. Got it wrestled
back into place, ended up having to drop the drive shaft center support
mount to get just enough slack to get the shaft back connected to the case.
Got it all put back together and took it for a drive. No more bad
grinding/rattling under acceleration. I was worried I was going to pick up
some drive shaft vibration but I took it up to 60 and seems smooth. I sure
as hell do not get why they changed to these star type bolts, thru just
seem cheap to me plus I had to get a new set of sockets for these. Now on
to the next project. I have a good feeling this was what was wrong with
 Wilts sons car.

Well so far with this vehicle the following have had to be replaced
since I have owned it:

all 4 air shocks
replaced LF air shock again
air suspension compressor
COMAND unit
Transfer case

From working on this vehicle it is nice and all, but it is not near the
quality of the MB of old.

I have a cousin who hit 3 moose about 40 years ago. He was roaring down
a gravel country road and came over a rise and there were 5 moose
standing on the road. He took out 3 of them but had the sense to throw
himself down on the seat so he did not get hurt. Try that today with

gravel country road and came over a rise and there were 5 moose standing on
the road. He took out 3 of them but had the sense to throw himself down on
the seat so he did not get hurt. Try that today with bucket seats and
consoles and shoulder belts etc. Back then the car had a bench seat and no
 seatbelts.

Re: [MBZ] Gl and the deer

2012-11-21 Thread Rich Thomas
I have related this story in the past, which I remember from being a
teenager. We were visiting my mother's friend who was a nurse, and
related the story that she was driving to work one morning at like 5AM
in her VW bug. Comes around a curve and there is a mule in the road,
which she hits and proceeds on a bit until stopped. She gets out to see
what had happened, the mule had rolled up and over the bug and landed
back on its feet, was sorta shaking off the experience and ambled off.
The bug was undamaged other than some mule hair. She was rattled but
given the animal and the car were OK proceeded on to work.

This story made an awesome impression on me.

Initial estimate 11k in damage to repair the gl deer damage. Shop said will
most likely find more damage after they tear into it. Going into a MB certified

Must be a mighty expensive hood and fender. That was little damage
for a bambi. hit on a corner is a light hit.

Some of em are so big and heavy that they require frame straightening
and such, and that generally results in the vehicle being totalled.
The prior van took out 4 bambis. The last one resulted in the van
being totalled. Only one SWMBO got while I owned it, but that took
out the van.

Bambi is nothing, you want damage go hit Bullwinkle. A really small moose is as
big as a really big deer.

Hit a 1200# moose and you don't care about the car, the question is Did
