Re: [MBZ] Getting fan shroud out of W124 E300D/2.5 Turbo

2018-03-23 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes

one out back so they're always handy.
I've got a Ziploc bag with 4 pairs in each vehicle and the groomer.
CurtCurrently waiting for the plane to board...

Black, which is more durable, runs at circa $9.

Re: [MBZ] Getting fan shroud out of W124 E300D/2.5 Turbo

2018-03-22 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Harbor Freight blue nitrile gloves, my stock purchase from them nearly every
visit. I would go with the black ones but they last too long, meaning when I’m
done they’re not, so they can get thrown away and wasted.

I glove up for just about every operation on the car, and if I have to use
multiple pairs, so be it. Saves on hands and cleanup.

Blue nitrile gloves are 7 mil thick... Black nitrile gloves are 9 mil
thick. Which I now use, They last much better through the mechanical abuse.

2018-03-22 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
There is another method of securing the fan that was on my 603 diesel that
might be present on yours:

On or near the top of the water pump housing behind the pulley are a couple of
ribs cast into the housing. Using these as a stop, a piece of rod stock about
3/16” in diameter, bent into a short “L” shape with the bottom end of the “L”
being maybe 1/2” long or slightly longer, is placed up against one of these
ribs and the end of the rod going into a hole in the back of the pulley or
flange.

Hope that makes sense *and* it’s something that’s on your car.

I did use a vice grip, but I put a thin piece of wood between the belt
and the jaw of the vice-grip to keep from chewing up the belt.

I also looked up the spec for tightening: 40 - 45 Nm depending on where
you look. I had thought it was 10 Nm and the torque I was exerting on it
with the vice-grip/wood clamp was more than that, but maybe not 45 Nm
(33 ft-lbf).

Re: [MBZ] Getting fan shroud out of W124 E300D/2.5 Turbo

2018-03-21 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
With the fan off you should be able to pull the shroud straight up. You may
have to remove the top radiator hose from the radiator

Re: [MBZ] Getting fan shroud out of W124 E300D/2.5 Turbo

2018-03-21 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
I would describe those holes as on the back of the pulley wheel, and a 5mm (or
so) hex key fits the hole. Once inserted, the hex key will jam against a rib
on the body of the water pump, and then you can loosen the bolt holding the fan
clutch.

I know that's how the M119 is set up, but this one is different. I do
have the appropriate Stahlwille 8mm "screwdriver bit" (short 8mm
socket-drive allen wrench, actually).

I'm not sure how that would be done.

That's for sure! My forearms are rather chewed up.

Thanks, Peter. That's what it looked like to me.

You have to have the holder tool which used to be sold at HF to hold the pulley
while loosening the bolt. With fan off shroud comes right out.

Re: [MBZ] Getting fan shroud out of W124 E300D/2.5 Turbo

2018-03-21 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
There are holes in the back of the clutch and a groove in the bracket. A heavy
wire with a hook bent at the very end will sit in that groove and fit into the
holes, locking the clutch so you can unscrew the bolt. 8mm hex, use a short
one. Some models I think you have to rig a strap clamp to do the job.

Radiator does not need to come out, but it's a pain. Shroud will have to come
out with the clutch and fan.

[MBZ] Getting fan shroud out of W124 E300D/2.5 Turbo

2018-03-21 Thread Craig via Mercedes
Do I need to take the radiator out to get the fan shroud out?

It looks like I shouldn't have to, but you never know.

I tried getting the viscous fan clutch out, but the central bolt only
spins. The shop manual section 20-5660hw shows a counter holder tool,
I don't see how that's held in place.

Section 20-5660ha talks about a union nut to a bearing body and shows an
open-end wrench bit going into an extension handle, but looking at the
car I don't see anything like a union nut.

All this is to replace the power steering pump with one Kaleb sent (at
least that's what is supposed to be in the box -- I haven't opened it
yet).
