They’ve done this in some form for years. Earlier models like the W140s had a
strap with a “T” shape on the end that you place in a slot on the bottom edge
of the trunk. W210s have a “handle” similar to this that hooks on the trunk
edge.

I think the 123 and 201 also have the strap.

The X5 also has a webbing strap that lifts the spare wheel out
of its well when you open the tailgate. (If you engage it.) That's
rather handy, and arguably necessary for many.

[MBZ] I just discovered something about the '94 E420 ...

2010-12-30 Thread Craig
It has non-standard wheels!

Here I have been looking for tires of the 195/65-15 size, for
6.5 J x 15 H 2 rims.

Our E420 has 215/55-16 tires, which of course means it has 16" rims!

Now I wonder what width and offset they are. I also wonder if that means
pulling a wheel off and looking for markings in the back.

I know from the owner's manual that the E500 has 8J x 16 H 2 rims and is
fitted with 225/55 ZR 16 tires. I wonder if someone swapped to those rims.

Then maybe I have a '93 owner's manual, since it says the standard size
is 195/65-15.

At any rate, I'm glad I didn't order some 195/65-15 tires! The 215/55-16

According to Tire Rack, a 1994 E420 has 235/60-16
If that's correct, you have a wide variety of truck and SUV tires to choose from
in that size.
What's the doorframe sticker say on it?

Here's an H-rated tire with good snow ratings in the survey:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=Geolandar+A%2FT-S&partnum=36HR6GEOATS

If you can get a 2nd set of rims (15") these are awesome in the snow:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=General&tireModel=Altimax+Arctic&sidewall=Blackwall&partnum=965QR5AMAXA&tab=Survey

If you just want new all season tires, these should be pretty good:
Altimax HP on my Achieva are almost as good in the snow as skinny snow tires
were on my Horizon.

You might check with Wonko if you're thinking about the Goodyears linked above.

That's strange. I went to Tire Rack yesterday and entered the description
for my car. I did it again just now and came up with the same thing:

   Original Equipment Sizes for 1994 Mercedes-Benz E420
   Description Size
   Original Equipment Size: 195/65-15

Good idea! I went out in our 3 deg.F. weather and looked. It says the
same thing as the owner's manual, 195/65-15.

That first one I linked was half tongue in cheek, since it's a all terrain truck
tire. But it had an H speed rating, plenty of weight rating, good owner survey
results, and sure looked like a M+S rated tire. Might look sort of odd on a
Mercedes though.

Those Yokos you have seem to be a Discount Tire exclusive, but they advertised
it as a premium all season tire. Just can't find much about them.

I went outside and pulled the left-front wheel and brought it inside so I

inside surface of the "spokes".

The rims are:Ronal

On one of the spokes there is the lettering Si7 next to a rectangular
box. That box is composed of 13 square sub-boxes. The large sub-box at
the top has the numerals "86" in it, and five of the smaller sub-boxes
have little dots while the rest have nothing in them. I surmise the rim

An excellent upgrade for a W124 E420! The biggest complaint about the
car in the magazines when it first appeared as the 400E, IIRC, was
that the carryover wheel/tire combo from the 300E was inadequate for
the increased power of the V-8. I'd say you've got a win/win there,
Craig. There's a lot more variety available in 16" tires than in 15",
and you can always get a set of 15" 300E wheels really cheap to mount
snow tires on.

500E/E500 rims don't fit an '86-'93 124 chassis car unless you roll
the inside of the fenders. Suspension geometry on the '94-'95
facelifted cars changed a little, but probably not enough to make a
difference.

Indeed. And since it's not available in lower profiles, would probably

They are indeed touted as snow tires, but in 225/55-16 on a '94 E420,
they sure are lousy.

On http://yokohamayk520.com/, if you click on "Links", you get taken to a

So, probably 825-830 revs per mile on the original tires.
205/55R16 would be a +1 for that size, 830-835 revs per mile,
or you could go 215/55-16, 820-825 revs per mile.
I'd probably choose 215/55, and somebody else obviously thought the same way.

Selection on 215/55 isn't as good as 205/55, and prices are higher on the 215s
for most brands. (I like to sort the whole list of tires by price, and scan for
tires rated 8.0 or higher in the owner surveys)

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?width=215/&ratio=55&diameter=16
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?width=205/&ratio=55&diameter=16

The old standby Altimax is $90 or $99:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=General&tireModel=Altimax+HP&sidewall=Blackwall&partnum=055HR6AMAXHP

The high performance Continentals are $91 or $101, and have a longer treadwear
rating than the Generals:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Continental&tireModel=ExtremeContact+DWS&partnum=155WR6ECDWS

The Goodyears are $113 and $117, with a $40 rebate on four:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Assurance+ComforTred+Touring&partnum=155HR6ACTT

I think those Z-rated Continentals look pretty good for the price, if made in
Brazil doesn't bother you. If you want USA/Canada made, go Goodyear.

So that's how you find things quickly! Of course, you could always sort
by "Reviewer's Avg Rating". When you do that, the Michelin Pilot Alpin

They also have a tendency to throw the tread at highway speeds

I dunno real snow tires are hard to beat. I need to pull the snows off the '83
240D and swap 'em (plus replace 2) to the '78 240D. The all seasons on it are
good but a 240D with snows is a stunningly good snow car.

I also need to figure out what I want to weight the 190D with. Its not
performing like it should. I'm thinking 2x 5 gallon buckets full of sand in the
trunk wells will fix it. I used to carry my other set of wheels/tires but that

The M+S rating just means "all season" in a jack-of-all-trades,

marking on the sidewall.

Those jokos don't seem to have a lot of siping in the tread, which is

A Mercedes on Blizzaks will go through snow until it gets so deep the
floor pans float the car. It is the best/safest car in all seasons,
including on ice. I know there are fans of the Norske tires, but
they also cost twice as much as Blizzaks. I have no experience with
them. My first set of Blizzaks were still made by Metzler, before
Bridgerock bought them out.

My SDL with generals was terrible. Sliding all over. I put Blizzaks
on the rear and it was an amazing transformation. When I was back in
that town the next week, I put 2 more on the front of the SDL. Then
it would go almost anywhere a snowplow truck could go. I think I
paid about $200 for the set of 4. Four nor$kes will cost you $500 or
more.

A couple of years ago I put 4 on the E320 for my daughter. I never
had to worry about her driving in the ice and snow. I think that set
was $220 or 230 on the car

The dodge van is really scary (like any FWD) on ice and snow with
some tires. I put two of the used Blizzaks on it, and it it is no
worry now. Last year the RF blizzak had no tread in the middle, but
it still starts and stops on wet, ice or snow like it was on clean
dry pavement. The LF has a little tread, but is probably down to the
wear bars. I am just trying to see how far they will go and still
start and stop well.

I'd rather not have two sets of wheels and two sets of tires, so I'm
looking for a good, all-season tire with good winter performance.

Here's something intereesting. I checked with Max's new online tire vendor,
Tirebuyer.com. They have very similar customer survey numbers for Altimax HP and
Continental DWS, except the Altimax averages 4.0 on a scale of 1 to 5 for light
snow traction, and the DWS gets 5.0. Then I found out that only one out of 93
people gave a snow rating for the DWS. I guess the other 92 people never drive
in snow or hadn't owned it through a winter before reviewing it.

Two out of 38 drivers both rated the Altimax at 4 in the snow.

With free shipping, they had the lowest delivered price on both tires.

I found a more eurocentric tire review site. Their numbers are on a scale of
1-5, with one being the best.

Nokian WR-G2 1.89 average, 1.6 in snow, 1165 responses.
Altimax HP 1.85, 2.8 in snow, 28 respondents.
Continental DWS 1.75, 2.2 in snow, only 6 respondents.
The low sample size for the General and Continental still gave pretty much the
end result I'd expect after seeing their Tire Rack reviews.

I've used the tubes before too but with the buckets I was thinking I could get
the sand for free and have buckets which are just handy... Of course I'd need
to fill the buckets and take 'em into the basement to dry by the fire for a day
or so. Otherwise I can picture myself needing the sand and having a bucket
frozen solid...

I have two 75lb "tubes" of sand in the trunk of my 300D.  Makes all the

Last tires I bought were noname from the junkyard for the van. They
seem to be ok. Don't know who made them.

Before that I bought mostly Bridgerock/Firerock including blizzaks
and Continental. Take your best online deal (add in the
shipping+mounting+stems+balancing) to the local guy and ask if he can
meet or beat the price for the same tire. Generally they will. I
think the 124 Blizzaks were about 230 or so installed and balanced.
