Re: [MBZ] I just discovered something!
They’ve done this in some form for years. Earlier models like the W140s had a strap with a “T” shape on the end that you place in a slot on the bottom edge of the trunk. W210s have a “handle” similar to this that hooks on the trunk edge. -D > On Nov 11, 2020, at 7:59 PM, Craig via Mercedes wrote: > > Ever wonder why the engineers put that strange lifting handle on the > plastic spare tire cover in the trunk of a W124? > > As the attached pictures show, I discovered the reason today. [MBZ] I just discovered something about the '94 E420 ...
It has non-standard wheels! Here I have been looking for tires of the 195/65-15 size, for 6.5 J x 15 H 2 rims. Our E420 has 215/55-16 tires, which of course means it has 16" rims! Now I wonder what width and offset they are. I also wonder if that means pulling a wheel off and looking for markings in the back. I know from the owner's manual that the E500 has 8J x 16 H 2 rims and is fitted with 225/55 ZR 16 tires. I wonder if someone swapped to those rims. The biggest complaint about the car in the magazines when it first appeared as the 400E, IIRC, was that the carryover wheel/tire combo from the 300E was inadequate for the increased power of the V-8. I'd say you've got a win/win there, Craig. There's a lot more variety available in 16" tires than in 15", and you can always get a set of 15" 300E wheels really cheap to mount snow tires on. I dunno real snow tires are hard to beat. I need to pull the snows off the '83 240D and swap 'em (plus replace 2) to the '78 240D. The all seasons on it are good but a 240D with snows is a stunningly good snow car. I also need to figure out what I want to weight the 190D with. Its not performing like it should. I'm thinking 2x 5 gallon buckets full of sand in the trunk wells will fix it. I used to carry my other set of wheels/tires but that took all my trunk space. -Curt Date: Fri, 31 Dec 2010 17:38:03 -0700 From: Craig To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] I just discovered something about the '94 E420 ... The M+S rating just means "all season" in a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none kind of way. Snow tires will have a "Mountain Snowflake" marking on the sidewall. Those jokos don't seem to have a lot of siping in the tread, which is where your wet and snow traction comes from, and something tells me they're pretty old; any tire over five years old won't grip worth a lick. A Mercedes on Blizzaks will go through snow until it gets so deep the floor pans float the car. It is the best/safest car in all seasons, including on ice. I know there are fans of the Norske tires, but they also cost twice as much as Blizzaks. I have no experience with them. My first set of Blizzaks were still made by Metzler, before Bridgerock bought them out. My SDL with generals was terrible. Sliding all over. I put Blizzaks on the rear and it was an amazing transformation. When I was back in that town the next week, I put 2 more on the front of the SDL. Then it would go almost anywhere a snowplow truck could go. I think I paid about $200 for the set of 4. Four nor$kes will cost you $500 or more. A couple of years ago I put 4 on the E320 for my daughter. I never had to worry about her driving in the ice and snow. I think that set was $220 or 230 on the car The dodge van is really scary (like any FWD) on ice and snow with some tires. I put two of the used Blizzaks on it, and it it is no worry now. Last year the RF blizzak had no tread in the middle, but it still starts and stops on wet, ice or snow like it was on clean dry pavement. The LF has a little tread, but is probably down to the wear bars. I am just trying to see how far they will go and still start and stop well. I'm on my first winter with dedicated snow tires (Blizzak WS70) and they have changed my world. Since Eurotire went away, I've found I can buy tires at local dealers and get them installed for less than any online price + shipping + mounting+stems+balancing. Yea, next time I buy tires I am going to order them from that tire buyer website, they are cheaper and have free shipping. Wonder how long that will last?? Re: [MBZ] I just discovered something about the '94 E420 ...
Last tires I bought were noname from the junkyard for the van. They seem to be ok. Don't know who made them. Before that I bought mostly Bridgerock/Firerock including blizzaks and Continental. Take your best online deal (add in the shipping+mounting+stems+balancing) to the local guy and ask if he can meet or beat the price for the same tire. Generally they will. I think the 124 Blizzaks were about 230 or so installed and balanced. what sort of tires/brands are you buying?
