That or if it’s wintertime put garbage bags over the seats with the car in a
sunny spot. When it’s done the leather will be sort of sticky, but that wipes
off with a shop towel or microfiber cloth.

My 124 has leather rather than MBTex. I’m a real fan of MBTex because it wears
like iron. I suppose leather is an upgrade. The seats are in great shape with
hardly any creasing and no tears. But, the leather is not soft. It’s almost
hard. It is very smooth and I don’t want (or need to) change the color.

I have not ever used Leatherigue. I don’t need to do the crack filler or
sanding or the total restoration. I want to soften and condition the leather.
I think a few folks on here have used it. Is the two step package what I want?
It’s the Rejuvenator and the cleaner.

My wife has an old pair of hiking boots that are starting to dry out and
crack a bit. I was wondering if the leatherique treatment would be good for
them . . .

Re: [MBZ] Leatherique

2014-03-03 Thread Dan Penoff
Sort of.

The R129 seats are really nice to clean, as the seat bottoms come out of the
frames with two bolts. Makes servicing the seat motors and other stuff a piece
of cake.

Removing all that stuff is really only necessary on the older models, such as
the W126, W123, etc. The newer models don't have a lot of trim and fiddly bits
that interfere with waxing and cleaning.

I just spent $500 for two new trees in my yard. I could have bought them from
Lowes or Home Despot for far less, but I went to a local nursery who is well
known for their level of service instead.

The trees cost me about $260, and the balance was delivery and planting. They
planted both today.

My oldest son was home, and they went through all the care and feeding
information with him. When he explained that he wasn't the one who ordered the
trees, they called me and went through the whole explanation all over again.
They also left written instructions on the care of the trees and an assurance
that I could call them at any time, a week, month, year, several years,
whatever, and they would be happy to answer any questions and offer assistance
if needed.

Needless to say, I have two nice new trees in my yard, properly planted and
staked, and no mess or sore back to deal with. Money well spent.

I just read the link. I was a bit confused as to the bit on convertibles.
Does it mean 303 is just for domestic vinyl tops, or as it says it keeps the
top waterproof, is it intended for most imported cars that come with a cloth
top?

I'll have to pick some up, I wonder if it's available at Canadian Tire here

Re: [MBZ] Leatherique rejuvenator on vinyl?

2009-02-01 Thread David Bruckmann
Vinyl is made of chlorine and hydrocarbons, plus some additives for
softness/flexibilty. It is the hydrocarbon and softener components
that I am looking to replenish/refresh. Components of the vinyl mix
will off-gas over time, eventually depositing a hazy film on the
inside of your windshield.

As a small test, the rejuvenator oil seems to have effectively
softened the rock hard pad/donut on the steering hub. I'm a little
reluctant to use it on the dash for fear of causing cracks where none
exist now, pending confirmation that it will/won't harm...

Gang,

The Leatherique instructions talk a lot about using Prestine Clean on
vinyl, but there is conspicuously no mention of vinyl in the Rejuvenator
Oil instructions.

Does anyone have an idea why this might be? I'm reluctant to use the
Rejuvenator in the absence of a specific recommendation, just in case it
dissolves the vinyl. Specifically, I'm thinking of using it on the
dashboard of my W108, which is currently NOT cracked...

why would you want to use the oil on vinyl? The oil is like putting
moisture back in your dried skin. Since vinyl is plastic there is
nothing to rejuvenate.

Re: [MBZ] Leatherique rejuvenator on vinyl?

2009-02-01 Thread Peter Frederick
That's because the restoration oil rejuvenates leather, made up of
tanned protiens, not plastic PVC which is what vinyl is. Don't know
if it will hurt, necessarily, but the oils in Leatherique rejuvenator
will either do nothing or make the vinyl oily, at best.

[MBZ] Leatherique cleaner

2006-10-25 Thread Dan Weeks
Rusty has the leatherique cleaner, but I find a product called
Quick-n-Brite works just as well, and is far
cheaper. It also works on damn near everything else, from trans lube
to the dog--literally! I use it to wash my cars, including filthy
rims, and carpets, upholstry, the whole thing. The only thing I don't
use it for that they claim it works on, and it no doubt does, is
windows, as it's a bit tricky to get the formula just right to avoid
streaking. Other than that, it does everything they say it will.
Non-toxic, biodegradeable, etc. I have no financial interest in it,
but wonder how I ever got along without it. Works great as a followup
to leatherique, in particular.

Thanks for the report Dan -
The leather in the SLC is getting very hard - realy needs the
treatment, and the lether in the SDL creaks and squeeks to the point
of distraction. I need to get onto this project - as soon as I finish
the others!

Follow Rusty's

[MBZ] Leatherique

2006-10-25 Thread Dan Weeks
I've used neatsfoot oil for decades on boots, harness leather, etc
and for such applications it does a great job, and it's cheap. BUT I
would not want to sit on leather that has absorbed a lot of it, as
dry leather will, as it leaves a greasy residue and a smell in my
experience.

I have used leatherique on the seats of my '82 SD and have been very
pleased--they come clean, are softer and more flexible. I put it on
with a spray bottle on a hot day, let it soak in well, and rub off
the excess, if any. On cracked areas, I make more than one
application. On the top part of my back seat seaback, which was
extensively sun-hardened almost to the consistency of cardboard, I
removed the seat and sprayed the underside of the leather
liberally--really soaked it--several times, until the leather
wouldn't accept any more. Saturated the top surface also. Did the
trick wonderfully--the leather there is now as soft as the rest of
the seats. Did the same with the underside of the leather on the
skirts surrounding the front seat with the same results.

Neatsfoot oil may or may not have softened the leather just as well,
but I'm sure it would have left me smelling like a sheep. And I
wouldn't want to risk staining my clothes. Also, the oily residue in
neatsfoot oil holds dirt--I know that from experience. Leatherique
does not, if you use the cleaner afterwards. Follow Rusty's
directions and you'll be very pleased.

I think you'll like the Gliptone I used on the leather seats in my MB. It
conditions the leather and adds a new car smell.

I am not worried about cleaning it. I am more interested in conditioning
the

"leather" so it doesn't crack.

Better yet, just use 409, Fantastic, or any other kind of cleaner.
Leatherique is expensive overkill for vinyl.

Re: [MBZ] Leatherique MB Tex

2005-12-28 Thread Peter Frederick
Leatherique will have no effect at all on MB Tex. Get a good vinyl
restorer and try, but chances are if it's beginning to tear, the knit
backing is rotted a way and it's toast.

Options then are find a used cover or spring (ouch!) for a new set in
Tex or leather as you see fit. I'm making a set for both my 280 SE and
my brother's 75 300D.
