I have to admit I don't miss worrying if my 240D would start in sub zero 
temperatures. I don't think I ever got one to start unassisted below -10F. My 
'98 Jetta TDI started unassisted at -20F once. It's never been that cold since 
I got my '15 Jetta TDI but I bet it would start no problems well into negative 
double digits.

A look at the engine bay would give some indication of corrosion on the 
aluminum bits, but in general the air does not do much to the body or 
underneath stuff, that is due more to road salt (or salt water).  I have 
noticed that the salt air (which is not salt spray, but I guess there is 
some amount suspended in the air) does have some corrosive effect but it 
is not severe enough to degrade things (except for these expensive 
cheaped-out wine coolers I bought, 3 have now had corroded condenser 
units that cause the refrigerant to leak out)

Not really.  Mine got plugs, wires, cap, and coil.  Once, when I got it.
It needed it all by then, but 20+ years is a bit much for high-voltage
components in a harsh environment.  Easy, and relatively cheap.
IIRC, the rotor was NLA, or stupid expensive.  Something like that.
I didn't change it.

Maintenance requirements far more than diesel? No. My parents had an 88 560SEL 
which they bought new. They barely maintained it and they hit 238,000 trouble 
free miles before my mom totaled it.

Later is always better.  Probably needs a full set of hydraulic cylinders, 
since the front locks are a function of the hydraulics.  They go whacky and 
you’re not taking the top on or off without the special wrench.

virtue-signalling and simpler to control electric cars.  A diesel or gas car 
has a goodly range and swift refueling.  A battery car takes almost an hour to 
fill, and you can only go less than 300 miles.  Range becomes 250 miles in five 
hours in your volt, but I could drive 400 miles in five hours in the E300D, and 
still not have to stop, but to widdle.   That diesel had a 650 mile range 
before it needed fuel at 80mph.  For my $0.02, electric cars are only good for 
around town or to the next large city, not for family vacations and trips.

The average Chevy dealer has zero Clean Turbo Diesel Cruzes on the lot. A 
handful of dealers (mostly in California) have 2-3 dozen. I know a guy in 
Florida who drove 500 miles up the coast to a dealer who wanted to sell him his 
2018 diesel, he said they had about 30 on the lot last summer. 
If you want a stick shift you have to buy a leftover 2018, they're auto only in 
2019.

The CTD Equinox (same 1.6L engine as the Cruze) seems to be more popular with 
US dealers and buyers. I'm not sure if I'd want a 137hp SUV, but a Cruze will 
blow the doors off any stock OM602 turbo, 0-62 around 8 seconds. 

The next step up from that AFAIK is the Colorado with four cylinder diesel, 
which is about the size and weight of a 1970s full size pickup. I can't 
remember if it's from the CTD family or the Isuzu/Duramax family, but it's 
2.8L/181hp/369ft-lb. 

Does MBUSA still sell the four cylinder 250 Bluetecs?
