The adjuster pucks do wear out though. Then you get one valve that stops
behaving. Replace the offending adjuster thing and it gets better. Or, since
you are in there, may as well do them all.

My understanding is that the valve adjustment generally gets too tight
rather than too loose. Too tight means that the valves don't close all
the way when they are cold. Once warmed up they likely expand a bit and
close better so the motor will run not too badly once it warms up but is
difficult to start when cold because the valves leak and reduce the
compression that is needed to get a diesel going. (Boy - how is that for
a run-on sentence?)

Yup - like the others said - classic sign of valves that need to be
adjusted. Why they go to tighter clearance instead of looser I have no idea
- but I usually found both loose and tight valves when I adjusted them on
OM615, 616 and 617 engines.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Check my thinking on something

2018-02-21 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
My understanding is that the valve adjustment generally gets too tight
rather than too loose. Too tight means that the valves don't close all
the way when they are cold. Once warmed up they likely expand a bit and
close better so the motor will run not too badly once it warms up but is
difficult to start when cold because the valves leak and reduce the
compression that is needed to get a diesel going. (Boy - how is that for
a run-on sentence?)
