Re: [MBZ] OT: How to divide my IMac
Applications can run from anywhere, so not putting them in the Applications folder is fine until you need access to them from a different user. Only apps in the proper folder show up for other users unless you search for them. Glad you got it fixed -- I find the Mac so much nicer to use than a PC precisely for this sort of reason. As a matter of fact, this isn't a trivial question. My son did this for me on another iMac, and he had to partition the hard drive. _Had_ to? I can enter the grocery store by stopping outside, bowing thrice towards Mecca, pirouetting once widdershins while singing "la-la-la", and then striding purposefully in. Of course, I can just walk right in, too. _If_ you partition, you do so for reasons _other_ than just adding another user to the machine. Unix (and derivative) operating systems were multiuser from Time 0. (That would be January 1, 1970!) Adding users has always been nearly trivial. Every one of our OSX Macs has at least four user accounts on it. One is partitioned, so that I can boot both Yosemite and the Leopard of Mobility Challenged Water, which is required to run my photo processing program. (SL still has Rosetta.) FYI, 6GB RAM and a SSD has really awakened this MBP. Totally satisfactory at the moment. Still only 8yo. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT: How to divide my IMac
I think there's some confusion in the wording here. You say "divide my Mac" yet you address a need for a user account that has write privileges on the machine. If you need a guest account that has write privileges, simply log in under whatever account you have administrative rights with, go to the "Users and Groups" preference pane, and create a new "regular" user (one without admin rights). That account will be able to create files and save them to their home folder on the machine. Now If you want to create a completely separate partition on the hard drive for use by another user, yes, that would require partitioning of the hard drive. Considering that the permission structure on Macs is pretty robust, I'm not sure why one would make the effort to set up another partition for a user's storage. That's mighty extreme and not a good use of real estate. Hard drive partitions has _nothing_ to do with user and group permissions, and _nothing_ with creating a user. Within Mac OS, the user "guest" may have unchangeable limitations, but any other user should be able to be added to any group and given any privileges. A hard drive partitions would change none of that. Maybe both were done at the same time - but there should be no tie between the two activities. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

No, it wouldn’t. However, you can certainly dual boot if you chose to, which is what I suspect was being attempted if someone was going to the trouble to create separate partitions. You'll notice he did not say "tech savvy". I gather security theater goes a long way in DC. To the original question, obviously the best way to divide the iMac is to donate it to a worthy charity. Then its benefits can be shared by all. Re: [MBZ] OT: How to divide my IMac
Wha? That makes no sense. Each user's data goes into their own users folder. I suppose that when you write "partition" you really mean he reinstalled the OS and he might have done that because the system was installed in some kind of dopey demo mode and nobody knew the correct password to fix it. If you've got an administrator level login adding another user is a trivial task. -Curt From: "astrasfo...@gmail.com" <astrasfo...@gmail.com> To: Curt Raymond via Mercedes <mercedes@okiebenz.com> Cc: Curt Raymond <curtlud...@yahoo.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 15, 2015 1:45 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: How to divide my IMac As a matter of fact, this isn't a trivial question. My son did this for me on another iMac, and he had to partition the hard drive. How can I create a second user rather than a "guest" so that they can log in independently and keep/save their work when they log out? System Preferences Users and Groups + If it takes you more than 60 seconds you're doing something wrong. And you're not 'dividing' anything. Total disk space will be freely shared. In other words, either user can run you out of disk space. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
