Depends on what you want. The $150 I spent on our most recent (2008) MBP
was well worth it. (Used, craigslist.) Can only run El Crap, not Sierra,
but other than that it's working very well. I upped the RAM from the scrap
pile.

Should be no problem. The Crucial drive I bought is a 2.5" drive for a laptop,
I had to buy an adapter to put it into my PC.
It came with an adapter to put it in an older laptop that uses a slightly
larger drive.

The two highest rated I saw when I was shopping were Crucial and Samsung.

I put an SSD in my desktop machine (HP XW8600, 10GB RAM, Win7, top of the pops
about 5 years ago, great home machine now) and boot times went from about 1
minute to about 30 seconds. The bios checks take longer than the OS booting. I
got a 120GB drive as I have a pair of 500GB drives for data.

The beauty of an SSD in a laptop, besides making it blindingly fast, is the
increase in battery life you get due to the decrease in power consumption.

If it's a beater, I understand, but if you're going to keep it for a while and
it gets used regularly an SSD is a good investment.

When you're making that big of a jump between revs it's almost always best to
do the delta updates rather then the "combo" or full updates. The combo
updates are what they would be downloading to your machine from the App Store.
You have to go to the OSX support Web site for each rev and download each of
the delta updates individually.

>From that big of a jump I would probably try to do a clean install with the

This is not an Apple issue - it would be like trying to jump from the original
XP version to SP4 in one step. That big of a gap and stuff is going to break.

from the recovery HD image, and it worked. I shut off the sleep and now
it is downloading 10.9 Mavericks about 2/3 there. I am hoping this

It is funny, when it finally came alive again, the apps I had open when
it tried to reboot last night are all open and my file I was using is
there. I guess somehow it saves a "state" so it can be recovered. It
rebooted into 10.3 I think, which was before the 10.8 updates. So it
was trying to go from .3 to .8.5 Whatever, it should be finished in

I am not doing anything of the sort to my desktop machine, it can just
crunch along on its old state.

After doing an Internet Recovery and that not working, then rebooting
several times to try to get to the install where it would actually see
my hard drive, I was able to do that after doing Disk Verify and Restore
a couple of times on the main HD and the recovery? drive. Tried to
install the Lion then, says it is unavailable, which the tubes say is
the next common problem. Anyway, after doing the verify and restore, I
decided to reboot and OH FRABJOUS DAY! it booted right up. Then it told
me that I had some software updates available, one was 10.9 and another
was to upgrade 10.8.4, which is I think what caused the problems last
night. 5.32GB ugh.

So I am now downloading the 10.9 upgrade, will see if that works now. I
declined the 10.8.5 and some other app updates, so maybe this will get
it functioning again. I logged in with my AppleID, I hope that doesn't
bugger things up if my wife's ID is still associated with this machine.
I guess I'll see.

It looks like that 10.8.5 upgrade software buggered the hard drive files
or something. Applecrap software there.

You can boot to single-user mode with Cmd-Opt-S (?), from there you
can poke around disabling things, perhaps.

Boot from a CD with C and something in the drive. That's
the start-over option. If you have an OS install CD/DVD.
Recovery disks are fairly machine-specific. I doubt an
iMac disc is going to be of much use.

Generally the updates are a good idea, and work well enough.
Disclaimer: our newest OS is 10.6 on a MBP. SWMBA hates it.
I've gotta say, it's no Pismo.

[MBZ] OT Macbook Pro S/W update kills it

2014-08-22 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
My wife had this MBP sitting around she hadn't used for like 10 months
(don't ask). Tonight I fired it up and was using it, it kept annoying
me to do a software update, 10.8 something I think. So I did that, was
like 2GB of something. Restarted and it just freezes, gray screen,
spinning wheel, or just gray screen. Apparently this was a major issue
from what I see, but none of the suggested fixes do anything. She
claims that it did not come with a recovery disk, or doesn't have it, or
something. So the question is how do I get this thing working again?

I have an imac recovery disk but it won't boot into safe mode or any of
the other modes with the various key combinations at startup to get at
some sort of "boot off disk." I was able to get it to do a "verbose"
startup, shift command V or something, but that hung too once it got so
far after displaying lines of stuff.

Is this thing totally hosed? Do I need to take it to the mac store and
get them to try to fix it? It's their damn software that killed it...

Re: [MBZ] OT Macbook trackpad and LCD not working but linux is

2012-02-29 Thread Hendrik and Fay
I came across that bulletin whilst searching for the problem and it
makes no difference cleaning it or using a bit of paper.

The trackpad will work fine for 10-20 seconds and then go wonky.

In regards to your rednecks, they say the smaller the mind the bigger
the attitude.
The way I see it there is a small minority of nutjobs in every religion
that gets the press.

I did a job for a Muslim school up north a while back and come 2 o clock

Oy.

I was very impressed with the representatives of the local Muslim community who

Of course we never see such ignorance in other parts of the world, and
I'm sure a guest speaker from a Jewish group would be welcome in the AP
religion class in a Syrian or Iranian high school, eh?

Intolerance is everywhere, always has been, always will be. It's a flaw

What was comforting about the whole thing was the number of people in the
community that came out and spoke in favor of the Muslims.

Sadly, the pea-brained rednecks idiots are committed to coming back to every
School Board meeting and complaining until they get their way. The more
intelligent ones in the group have figured out that they would be happy with
some sort of policy that screens classroom speakers.

What I find funny and refreshing is that the chairwoman of the Board, who is
about as WASP-y as you can get, has stood up to these idiots and run logical
rings around them every time they show up.

Go to ifixit.com and see if there is anything on there about a repair.
They have reasonably-priced replacement parts too, at least until your
gummint gets its paws into the deal. I repaired a macbook with a power
board i got from them for $US80, Apple were saying $1000 to fix it
(which is basically "buy a new one"). A few special screwdrivers and
such, and a big sheet of paper to tape all the little bits to, with
numbers of the step, and off you go.

I have already tried replacing some bulging caps, made no difference.
May have gotten onto a cheap power board.
I'll open the Macbook up and have a look, perhaps check the connections

it works well sometimes and then goes wonky. Talked to the Indian apple
techie who got me to put the recovery disc in there and it still flunked
out.
On a brighter note, finally got around to upgrading my Ubuntu OS which
had become very cranky and needed a new install. Got 11.10 which seems
very appely in it's interface, clicked on the system settings and it
looks just about like an apple OS one.
Also my Benq LCD monitor decided to crap out, am trying to source a new
power/inverter board but that is nearly mission impossible. So I bought
a new one to be able to read your words of wisdom and general ravings.

Screen sharing versus screen mirroring.

Sharing makes a giant desktop (also known as an "extended desktop") out of the
two monitors, with the primary monitor having the dock and desktop icons on it.

Screen mirroring is just what it describes. You will have the same image
(desktop) on each monitor, as the new one "mirrors" the main monitor.

This is typical when you are using a projector, for example.

I've been using a Dell flatscreen monitor at work as a 2nd monitor on my
Macbook without issue for well over a year. Recently I've used an Acer
flatscreen at home, also without issue.

The other day I plugged in the dongle with the monitor cable attached and
the Macbook didn't recognize the monitor all. The monitor displayed "no
signal" and the Display Preferences showed only the main display. I tried
"Detect Displays" with no change.

Based on forum postings I'm seeing this is not exactly an uncommon
propblem. I tried rebooting with a PRAM reset (OPT-APPLE-P-R) and a SMC
reset (SHIFT-CTRL-OPTION-POWER) to no effect.

Any other ideas? I've tried two different monitors, different cables, and
tried using the VGA and the DVI dongle, so I don't think it's anything to
do with any of that. Mac OS 10.6.7.

Re: [MBZ] OT: macbook woes

2011-06-18 Thread Dan Penoff
Gerry,

Ports are generic in the sense that it doesn't matter what the OS is, they are
simply the assigned "door", if you would, that a particular type of traffic
will use.

These are pretty much standardized, for example, 25 and 110 are used for mail,
and 80 is used for HTTP traffic.

That's not to say someone can't use a different port for something - they just
have to make sure it's not allocated to something else first.

For reference, there are 65,535 ports available for transport layer protocols,
such as TCP and UDP.

The ports that the Mac Mail program uses as defaults are common to all mail
programs.

The issue is not the software, but that your ISP is using non-standard ports.

Google sounds like a good alternative to fall back on if I can't find a
workaround for Embarqmail/Centurylink.

Have you asked Embarqmail/Centurylink what they want for you to be able
to connect?
Craig

I plan to ask them tomorrow. I've talked to them twice and I think
the ones I talked to simply ask me questions out of a manual and have
little knowledge of Macs. Hopefully someone on the weekend crew will know
more about Macs.

I tried the ports listed on help on the MacBook without success so far.
I searched the web trying to find some reference to port and other possible
fixes since Snow
Leopard has a known problem with their "self select" port program that
doesn't work very well.

(The fix is to select ports manually.)
A lot of people had questions but the only answers I found were suggestions
for trying the

three ports Mac-help lists.

Without notifying subscribers Embarqmail or Centurylink changed the address
for SMTP.

Originally the server addresses were:
Inbound: Pop.embarqmail.com
Outbound: SMTP.embarqmail.com

Now, the addresses are:
Inbound: Pop.embarqmail.com
Outbound: SMTP.centurylink.com

However, the original addresses still work on the desk computer, so maybe
the new addresses

are only for Macs.

It was quite a few days. First a (lightning transient?) knocked out a line
filter which caused
squirrelly computer operation. Very shortly thereafter the infamous XP
antivirus 2012 malware
locked up the computer. Then I got the MacBook (which I use mostly on trips
and at WiFi sites)
off the shelf to use until the malware was removed and found that I couldn't
send on it. This happened in the middle of fixing knotty problems on the
300Ds A/C system.

Fortunately, everything except the MacBook "send" problem has been fixed

You might need to configure/open port 587. That's for authenticated
SMTP which many ISPs now use. Some actually block SMTP on port 25 as
it's so commonly used by spam bots.

I have had this problem in the past, the fix is to configure port 25
correctly.

Sometimes this is a global setting in system preferences, sometimes

Mail Connection Doctor says: "Connection to server succeeded. Login not
required." Also says:
"Could not connect to this POP server. Check your network
connections...etc. Also verify that server accepts connections on port 25."
I changed the port setting from port 110 to port 25 but it would not send on
that either.
All entries for port 25 and 110 show "KCFStreamSocketSecurityLevel(none)" I
suppose that

means that no firewalls were blocking either port.
The port was initially set at 110
...
Embarqmail said they changed their smtp server from "smtp.embarqmail.com" to
"smtp.centurylink.net", but their pop server is still "pop.embarqmail.com".

Mail Connection Doctor says: Connection to "smtp.centurylink.net" was
successful
and arche...@embarqmail.com connection to server succeeded (this was on port
110),

but when trying to send test message to Mercedes discussion group, a box
came up saying:

"Cannot send message using the server: SMTP.centurylink.net"
I changed my address to "smtp.centurylink.net" to see if that would work but
it didn't.

Check your firewall settings. You may have to open the outbound port (25)
in the event it's turned off.

Resetting the PRAM is always a good start when things are acting up, and it's
not destructive, either. Another thing to do when things are screwy is to
reset the NVRAM, which differs depending on what hardware you have.

The Apple support site will have the process for your machine.

[MBZ] OT: MacBook question

2010-10-23 Thread Gerry Archer
Got the MacBook switched off and called the ISP. Turned out that the ISP
entries for a MacBook are different than those for a PC, which were the ones
I was trying to use.

Mail is working well now.
I was looking for a way to reset to defaults while trying to get mail set
up, so knowing about PRAM will be useful in the future for a MacBook newbie.

Thanks,

You might also want to reset the PRAM. This won't hurt anything - it just
takes all the system settings back to the defaults. You won't even see a
change.

Hold down P-R-Option (alt)-Command (Apple) keys, then power up. Continue
holding this key combination down until the machine does it's characteristic
"bong" tone, and keep holding down until it restarts.

#1. Force quit mail. I forget what the key combination for
force quit is, option-command something, I'm sure Google
knows.
#2. Hold the power button for 30 seconds (feels like
forever) which will shut the computer off. Remember this if
you're in an unintended acceleration Toyota too, press and
HOLD.

I looked on CL and found some fairly inexpensive listed, relative to new
-- if the logic board had been bricked it would have been cheaper to buy
a used one than buying a new logic board. Might be the way to go, then
cannibalize it and sell bits on ebay or something.

I'm at the beginning of a Powerbook Titanium rejuvenation (busted
hinge, of course) -- 1 GHz DVI. I'm going to have to do a video
cable transplant (at least) for the new screen I got since the wires
are partially torn off the plug, and I need to check to see which LCD
I have in there anyway.

That means complete teardown, disassemble the two screens, put the
correct one in the good frame, put the correct cable on, and then re-
assemble.

This is almost as much fun as cleaning watches, and somewhat less
fiddly.

DVI has three flavors. DVD-D (digital only), DVI-A (analog
only), and DVI-I (both).

The analog in a DVI connector is "normal VGA" [xga, sxga] and
can mechanically be converted to HD15.

DVI-D requires digital-to-analog electronics in the adapter, so
it's not cheap to do it well.

All that to say I don't know what the mini display port really
is. And if it is converted to DVI - which DVI is it?

The biggest reason for DVI is there can be communication between
the monitor and the computer so Vista can take full advantage of
the DRM crud it's crippled with.

2009-07-14 Thread Russ Williams

Gerry,

A local Recycler had two on eBay. Auction was over yesterday with No Bids.

You can try to give them a call and see if they will sell the outright.
Only $9.99 plus 7.00

Shipping.

presents, it cost less than anything else I could have bought new,
used, or refurb. Don't think anyone could tell it from a new one.
Ordered it on Sunday morning and completed the order without also
ordering the remote monitor adapter for fear someone else might beat
me to it. It's the cheapest refurb MacBook I've seen and I've been
watching the website for quite a while. It's charging now, and as
soon as several other jobs get done, I'll get an adapter from Radio
Shack and set it up as the main computer.

Just wanted to thank you Apple Mac guys for all the great information
and encouragement. Wouldn't, couldn't have done it without your help.

Gerry

Congrats! I love mine. SWMBO loves hers, 2-3 years older That was
a wise choice.

Now, download Boot camp from Apple, it is free.
Then install XP per boot camp instructions.
After all that is done, you can set, in the OSX startup options, if
you want it to boot into windoze or Mac. The default will be Mac
After xp installation, hold down the option key at startup to choose
the operating system you want to boot. (you will choose the Mac
drive or the windoze drive)

You should be able to buy a video adaptacator on fleabay
