The much-maligned Windows 8 interface. In 10 it is relatively easy to
ignore, in 8 / Server 2012 it really gets in the way.

The active computers are older (2011/2-ish) enterprise equipment: a
couple Dell Latitudes, an HP desktop, a Dell tower. I believe they
are all 64-bit capable processors.

During the beta I also had W10 installed on my Dell netbook (mini 10v,
32-bit Intel Atom I think) and it ran okay, no worse than XP/7 - but
the screen driver died shortly after. If I were Jim I would have
resoldered it, but I am not Jim so it's been recycled. That was
definitely a hardware failure, it was a long time coming.

Best,
Tim

I have, on all my personal computers and laptops. I like it better
than 7, but mainly because of the family policy management abilities
and improved login - as an OS it's generally the same
relatively-stable Windows experience. I don't care for metro but I'm
used to it from using 2012 at work, so that was not a big issue. No
slowdown or other issues on my older hardware, for what that's worth.

Dan, I don't know about security issues. The upgrade kept my Win 7 settings. I
then went into Security settings after the upgrade and tweaked anything I

I did on the wife's PC - and it works fine overall. I did not notice an
increase in performance. Sometimes "Edge" - the new "improved" browser acts
up and she screams at it - but she did that before the upgrade also. I'm
experimenting with Opera, Iron, Comodo Dragon, Comodo IceDragon, and
SeaMonkey to find an easier, less annoying alternative for her.

I can’t vouch for the Widows files. but the Apple files you reference are
merely caches, or places where files and data are cached during use. The
system saves copies of these if it thinks you’re using them regularly so that
when you re-visit a site it can load faster.

As a point of housekeeping you can easily clear them on a regular basis without
fear or damage. Just do a “Safari > Clear History” and “Safari > Preferences >
Privacy” and click on “Remove all Website Data”.

Do understand that if you remove cookies if you had autofill turned on for
things like credentials that you would have to re-enter this information on the
respective web page.

There are some tools that clean this stuff out automagically, such as a program
I have used for many years called “Cocktail”.

Re: [MBZ] OT winders 10

2016-04-01 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
They've been there since IE 4 or 5, IIRC. They are supposed to speed up
browsing by keeping you from having to download those same files every time
you go back to the same web page. You used to be able to set limits on how
mush space the temp and cache files could use, but since disk space is so
cheap now, I don't bother anymore. The log files are there for tech support
when you call in with a problem. You should be able to limit the space they
have as well - which decreases the time until they are over-written - which
decreases their usefulness.

If your disk is getting full, yes they will effect performance. I'd
recommend running a disk optimizing program - one that defrags the files
and puts them all together after CCleaner does it's thing. Find the
limiters for those things before you clean again.

Re: [MBZ] OT winders 10

2016-04-01 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

Can anyone explain why Microsoft, Apple, and other large providers constantly
and repeatedly load large amounts of "crap" on my Windows 7 computer? I
discovered it while looking for a reason the computer slowed down at times.
Following is an example of the "crap" www.Ccleaner.com removes almost any time
I run it:

Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files 152 Megabytes
Windows Explorer Thumbnail Cache 1 Megabytes
Windows System Temporary Files 1 Megabyte
Windows System Windows Log Files 3 Megabytes
Safari Internet Cache 49 Megabytes
Safari Cookies 40 KB
Windows MS Search 1 Megabyte

At times Windows will have placed as much as 200 Megabytes of crap on the HD,
and Safari as much as 100 Megabytes. Just as soon as Ccleaner removes it, it is
rapidly replaced; depending on the time of day. (Between midnight and 6 am
there is usually not much downloading).

These large downloads didn't seem to start until Windows 10 came on the scene.

Thanks,
Gerry

I did on the wife's PC - and it works fine overall. I did not notice an
increase in performance. Sometimes "Edge" - the new "improved" browser acts
up and she screams at it - but she did that before the upgrade also. I'm
experimenting with Opera, Iron, Comodo Dragon, Comodo IceDragon, and
SeaMonkey to find an easier, less annoying alternative for her.

Windows 10 has a number of serious security issues that would prevent me from
ever deploying it for my or the family’s use. There are some major lapses in
privacy that I would never allow, although I understand you can defeat or

Kaleb,
I've done it on two desktops and a laptop. My only problem was that one of my
old Dells required a BIOS upgrade (free from Dell) in order to accept the Win
10 upgrade. After a little browsing, you equate where things are in the
"settings" section. I really like how it handles new devices, network devices,
etc. I think it's more stable than 7. I'm quite satisfied with the upgrades on
all 3 pcs. And the price was rightFREE.

I did it on my home machine a couple weeks ago and we've been very happy with
it. They moved a bunch of crap around for no reason again but it seems very
stable. Sadly you can't turn the pretty stuff off like you could in 7 but for
free...
