[MBZ] POS W220

2017-02-13 Thread clay via Mercedes
This car is really a rolling polished turd. The cluster just shat itself, so
now a driver can no longer see what it going on regarding speed or other data
while driving. Research shows DBAG knew full well they had screwed up and had
a 10 recall on this. I am not sure the work was done, but if it had been, now
the replacement is dead. Stealership says it is a $2500 part.

I hate this car

Re: [MBZ] POS W220

2017-02-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It also bolsters my contention that the W220 is a veritable snake pit of
functions only manageable if you have a DAS/Xentry system, and even if you do
you’re still pretty much relegated to being a parts changer of very expensive
parts.

I’ve had cars I had little confidence in but my W220, despite being very nice
and everything working just fine, was at the top of my list. I hated driving
it.

And not only that but you will also likely need all manner of expensive
gear and service from the stealer to replace it and get it and the rest
of the car and systems to play nice with each other and actually talk to
each other. Sorta like marriage counseling for a car and it's extended
dependents. You probably gonna have to put the root on it too and hope
that keeps the hags away.

And if even if you do all that it will still be a POS.

And as Clay suggests, there was a recall on the instrument clusters. I don’t
remember the details, but I do remember seeing references to it in the various
W220 forums.

Since it’s a digital cluster, when it dies you’re flying blind as Clay
describes.

Re: [MBZ] POS W220

2017-02-14 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I think in those cars, and Jaime would know the details, everything is
connected to the CANBUS which is like a network in the car, and all the
devices talk to it and receive info from it, so you would need to know
the protocols, device addresses on the bus, etc. then how a particular
component actually turns the data into something that is displayed.
Anything could be brute-force reverse-engineered but it is not easy or
quick. But yeah once you had that it could probably be done. I guess
there is some published protocol for some of it so those dongles can
capture info that then gets sent to an app on your phone to show various
performance info, but that does not go to the actual device level.

Sounds like whoever owns one of these needs a donor out back that might
be still mostly functional. I guess Dan did me a favor on my buddy's
car, but now the ML is getting up in miles and might go past the ext
warranty limits...

Unfortunately it is an electronic toy. As with any electronic toy, when

tree out of the sunroof, and make flowerbeds in the engine bay and trunk.

Does the car still run and drive? If so, drive "by the seat of your pants".
You can judge your speed reasonably well, and use the surrounding traffic -
just match them. I drove my Olds V8 powered MGA for 10 years that way -
never did spend the money to convert/connect the speedo. I did have oil and
fuel gauges though - aftermarket steam gauges would work there.

Just because it's a crappy POS doesn't mean that it won't get you from A to
B.

This in not just the speedo making no data, it is ALL NO DATA, so I can drive
the car until it runs out of gas, because i will not know the tank is getting
empty. That the oil pressure is down, the parking brake is on, the temp is in
the red, or any other host of failures

Yeah, lets take simple discreet systems, a speedo, a tacho, a temp
gauge, a fuel gauge and a handful of idiot lights, (that are relatively
easy to troubleshoot) and turn it into a complicated, non-repairable
mess, just because we can Charge $2500 for it in place of $200.
Then for good measure, run several step up transformers to power some
really stupid fluorescent bubs, (also proprietary)

clay via Mercedes
February 15, 2017 at 6:44 PM
The grossest issue is that the thing runs on florescent lighting. A
bunch of step up transformers to take 12v to 4kv to power three lamps.
The board is a full on logic board beyond what a simple arduino can
defeat. There are a few yootube videos on how to swap in LED, but that
is beyond my solder ability. Then you have to reprogram the whole mess

[MBZ] POS w220 is gone

That car was not worth the scrap metal value. Well, a little more. Sold it
for “rebuilder” price of $1800. Bound to be much more value than that in the
car, but I just needed it gone. No need for four cars, when only three are
actually used on the road.

2018-01-06 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
IT was a post 1995 benz.

Crap on wheels

It needed a computer to be able to diagnose or do any repairs, and I only need
a car which needs wrenches alone to be made good.

As for the technical issue, it has pooped the bed with the Airmatic. The
speedo cluster failed a year ago, the electronics are about to implode, the
circuitry for the lighting has corroded due to being built in china, the
plastic in the cabin is disintegrating, and I am certain that at any given
moment another annoying failure will take place
