Re: [MBZ] Phoenix
You have to think about summers here. Summers are hotter than a (wait, this isn't Banned...)...it's stupid hot. The airport is easy to get in and out of. Buckeye (west of Phoenix and west of Litchfield Park where I live) is Okie-esque. What the others have said about the greener grass should be considered. Day to day life here has nothing to do with Disney World, or any of the "attractions" for that matter. Or going to the beach. People who envision some sort of Utopian lifestyle because we live near the ocean or the Mouse are experiencing an altered reality that just doesn't exist. My days here are little different from what they were anywhere else I've lived. I have to go to work, take care of family and household matter, deal with the daily issues of life we all do no matter where we live. it has nothing to do with the beach or going to Busch Gardens, nor is that an option. Dan Yup No mouse, no busch. When people hear we lived in Hawaii, they have visions of "Robin's" Estate in Magnum. Tain't so. Reality is houses stacked nearly touching, an Ohana house in the backyard, either for family members or to help make the payment on the house or both. Keeds play in da street, or at the schoolyard. No room at da house. When we moved there, the avg income per working person was 10k/year, and the average household income was 35k/year. That means 3-4 working adults per household. My first job (60-80 hrs/week) paid the rent in a less than fancy house. We had no furniture except a table and some chairs. The second job bought the food. (16-20 hrs/week) The third job paid for school stuff and clothes for the kids. One guy on welfare with section 8 housing made the equivalent of 40k/yr for sitting on their okole. (look it up, the urban dictionary definition is cleaned up) I've never been to Pearl Harbor, except one trip to the Hickam O club with MBCA. Never had a shave ice at Haleiwa. Never watched the surfas on big waves. We did go to Haunama Bay once, but no snorkeling (too expensive to buy or rent) We did take the kids to Waikiki once in a while because it was pretty easy to get to on DaBus and it was fun to watch the tourists. On those days, we took lunch. Restaurants were out of the question. We did hike Diamond Head 2-3 times. We took Chocolate Chip cookie bars and guava juice and maybe lunch. But the CC Bars are tied to standing on top of Diamond Head. Those memories will last forever. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Phoenix / Relocation
+1 I have made world wide moves. You come out poorer most of the time. The only upside is to lifestyle because you REALLY wanted to be there. The geography, the people, the boon to your career or dreams. Dan left much behind with each move. If you can keep some of what you had (home/property-rent it out) then start over in your new location, there is some flex. Moving your belongings tends to lead to broken stuff. Sometimes it pays to just find new things after the move. Not sure what you would do with your car collection. Maybe Regina stays behind and oldest male child can part out cars for you. If you do move, find a place that suits you best. Not all towns are the same. Some just suck, some feel like home. clay On Nov 16, 2015, at 4:57 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: > No matter how good the deal, you always lose in a relocation. Re: [MBZ] Phoenix / Relocation
No matter how good the deal, you always lose in a relocation. I don’t say that to be negative or discourage anyone from doing so; rather, to make them understand that the costs related to moving and setting up household in a new location will always cost you more than the basic expense f relocation itself. If you plan well and do some good record keeping, the tax benefits can offset some of that expense, but not all. What the motivation is is what really counts here. For example, I have relocated four times. Each time the reasons were different. 1.) Indianapolis to Wisconsin (Kohler). Bare minimum expenses were covered, the better part was out of pocket. Our motivation was career-oriented, so we knew that if we made the move in the long term it would pay off. It did. We both built our careers and incomes substantially by making this move. 2.) Wisconsin to Florida. All expenses covered, professional movers/packers, etc. Nicest, easiest move I ever made. Motivation was to slow down career, spend more time with family, stop traveling. Achieved all of that and more. 3.) Florida back to Indianapolis. Major expenses covered, but we had to do all the work. Brutal, time consuming, took over our lives for several weeks. Motivation was career oriented for both of us. Economy tanked two months after we arrived, as did everything else. Ouch. 4.) Indianapolis back to Florida. Completely out of pocket, finally putting much of that debt to rest these days, thank goodness. Done in stages so it wasn’t a major hassle, but still damned unpleasant and costly. Motivation? Get the hell out of the North and back to Florida. Mission accomplished. I guess my point is that there are a lot of reasons why you might relocate, but don’t do it on a whim or because the position pays more. Salary increases make little difference on your living style, and are often incremental in reality if you’re moving to a more expensive location. A change of scenery or a true desire to live in another part of the country is a good reason, but again, you’re not doing this for personal gain - because you won’t. And if this is your reason, for gosh sakes, please, please do your due diligence and carefully scout out the location and environs. Spend a lot of time researching things, and spend as much time as you possibly can in the area and talking to people who actually live there to understand what it’s like. I say this because you can’t imagine how many people who visit Florida will say that they want to move here after a week at Disney World. Re: [MBZ] Phoenix
The grass is always greener, but in reality, it rarely is. Stay put, enjoy your stuff and family, and when the next notch up the ladder presents itself in your neighborhood, go for it. I can assure you that in relocations like this, no matter how good they sound, how much of the costs the company covers, or how much more money you make, you ALWAYS lose. Sometimes more than others, but you always come out a little less when the dust settles. Take it from someone who has done it more than once. Dan > On Nov 16, 2015, at 6:50 PM, Kaleb C. Idaho or Utah are relatively inexpensive. ABQ is nice, I hear. Maybe Flagstaff. The coastal states are either tax you to death or cost an arm and leg in metro regions. clay On Nov 16, 2015, at 2:22 PM, Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes wrote: > What is the temp in Phoenix today? I have a feeling I would be way out of my okie element in any of these locations. At the end of the day if I were to proceed and did by some long shot get the move up, it would mean a fundamental change of life style. I would have to sell all or most of my cars and parts. In the end I am not sore of the money would be worth it or not. Sent from my iPhone > On Nov 16, 2015, at 5:20 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes > wrote: > > Boise is nice if you don’t mind winter. Grand Junction? Are you nuts? He doesn’t want a nine month ski vacation. Tell him what the temperatures were two-three months ago in your neighborhood. Portland is nice, but lots of clouds and the granola folks. Eastern Oregon is pretty sparse but nice, as is eastern Washington state. Understand that you’re talking about some pretty serious travel if you’re covering an area like that. As for cost of living, if you’re remotely close to a metropolitan area in Washington, Oregon, Colorado, or California, your cost of living is going to be significantly higher. I’ll bet the job compensation doesn’t reflect that? Eastern or southern Colorado would be nice and probably just as affordable as where you are now. However, it’s pretty damned rural, but I’m not sure how that compares to where you are now. Mao and Craig have lived in those parts, but I don’t think it’s recent for either one, so their information might be a bit dated. How’s about Albuquerque, NM? Good location, probably a decent cost of living. If you’re going to be covering an area of that size you would just about have to live near a major airport I would expect. What is the temp in Phoenix today? Just curious. I am thinking about throwing my name in the hat for an open west coast regional manager job at work but would have to relocate to the region which would mean having to live in Colorado, Phoenix, California, Seattle etc. My main issue would be what to do with all my crap, and I am not sure what the money would be if it's worth the additional cost of living in those places. I think living in the west coast would be out as the cost of living is way too high there. I would be thinking Phoenix or somewhere i Colorado. Sent from my iPhone ___ http://www.okiebenz.com High today 57. Locals have on the goose down jacket. My cousin lives in Montrose CO and loves it there. The couple times I've been through Grand Junction, CO, it seems nice. CO is invested by the fruits and nuts from CA, as is Seattle. Phoenix may suck in the summer with 115F heat... but try shoveling sunshine all winter just once and you will change your tune. I have seen temps here inside a closed car [measured] of 180+ at high summer season. Plan accordingly. At the Ranch I've measured ground temps [mid summer] of 190F+. On the plus side... rust is unknown [well, nearly unknown]. Humidity is often below 12%. I was probably stupid enough 35 years ago (that would have put me at age 21) to tackle the quad, and eat it just to prove that I could. By the way, I am not vegan. Vegans can be a bit strange and radical -- especially the ones who refuse to wear leather shoes because the leather came from an oppressed animal. I go to work each day in blue Converse sneakers by choice (and a touch of rebellion) and not due to anything related to vegan pseudo-morality. My watchband and my belt and my wallet are leather.
