I agree - so my kids learned to drive a standard tranny in the 240D that
their grandfather bought new (just as the Alzheimer's was setting in. Our
son then bought two 190D's from Kaleb, took the manual tranny from one and
swapped it into the other that had been auto. He learned LOT doing that,
much of it what NOT to do.

I agree with a diesel VW as second. The MB will be easier to find the shift
gates on for a new shifter.
Actually a 190D is also a good choice...

Ok thanks will look into the slk etc. I am not confident any of them will
take the torque, but it seems odd that some sort of gwagen or higher

Mom let me stall her 1977 Nova 10-20 times starting out on a hill when I was
15. I didn't want to drag the clutch, I wanted to get it right. When I finally
got it right once I was set for life. I think I impressed the SoS (DMV) tester
that I took my road test with a 3 on the tree. (which was a lot easier than the
F100 with a cap on the back would have been, but harder than my brother's Mazda
GLC that I'd done most of my driving in).

Re: [MBZ] Quiet day on the list

2020-02-21 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I spent all summer every year for many years on a Farmall A cultivating
tomatoes.  You sit about the same level as the clutch and brake petals.
You shift gears with your left hand.  I called it my British sports
car.  I was 9 to probably 15.   It was built in Feb 1942 without
anything electric or hydraulic, except the magneto.  If I killed it
(Very easy to do with the cultivator down) I had to jump down, run to
the front and crank it.   Eventually we got a bellhousing for a starter,
a starter battery box, wiring harness and lights for it.  I was probably
14 when I split the tractor and put in the bell housing, starter and
other stuff.   It was always a fun tractor to drive, although I did get
very sick of tomatoes, and cultivating tomatoes.  In those years, we had
tomatoes every day, and sometimes twice a day.

My suggestion for having the kid shift is to get an old ford truck (3/4T
or more) with the old ford cab ranger 4 spd floor shift transmission
(truck transmission)  1946-66 for sure, maybe later. That gear shift
spans so much of the cab that it is easy to know if the kid has it in
the right notch.   That is why they were called cab rangers.   R is up
by the steering column.  1/2 is in the vicinity of the radio and 3/4 is
over by the glove box door.

Won’t be the last hole I’ll cut in a roof. If it’s done carefully and
correctly, leaks should be the last thing to worry about.

I’ve cut holes in a number of roofs for skylights, exhaust stacks, fans, etc.
Never had a leak to this day.

When I bought my current house, with plans to put in a 95% furnace, my realtor
suggested I tear out the masonry chimney and put in a 2nd bathroom closet.
I thought he was nuts. It's a lot of work to disassemble a chimney, then you've
got a 18" square hole in the roof to fix, then you have to build a closet that's
only a few feet away from an existing closet...

After I switched to an electric water heater, I siliconed a 12" square patio
block to the top of the 8" clay flue and a steel plate over the flue entry hole
in the basement to seal off the chimney. If anybody wants to put a woodburner in
some day, there's a good chimney ready to use.

Stall is all about airspeed (not enough) and angle of attack (too much).
Amazing vertical wind currents are possible around thunder storms.
Downdrafts can be dangerous. I don't see how an updraft would cause a crash
unless the flight crew was disoriented and made bad choices or structural
limits were exceeded.

I am not an engineer or a pilot for that matter but it would not make
sense to me that the plane would stall if the storm was lifting it at
that rate. That would make it sort of like a glider would it not?
Isn't it more likely that the storm in some manner interfered with the
instrumentation so that the pilots were unaware that they were stalling?
Is that not what happened with the Air France plane that went down in

Point well taken. There is an existing ceiling fixture that won’t be removed,
so there is a backup if necessary. It is set up with CFLs right now.

You can get lights to mount inside the tube.

Craig - Lowe’s won’t price match special orders. I ordered it form them
anyway, as I am letting them carry the paper on my Lowe’s account for six
months. Then I’ll pay them….

[MBZ] Quiet day on the list

2015-01-20 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

This being a quiet day on the list, I have a question about the Air Asia flight
that went down.
Todays news websites report that the plane apparently climbed at 600 ft/min,
stalled, and then crashed. That rate of climb is beyond its capability without
stalling according to the reports.
My question is: could the storm the plane was trying to avoid have had updrafts
severe enough to "lift" the plane at that rate of ascent?
The pilot on a blog I accessed described what can happen when a plane gets out
of its "envelope" but doesn't mention anything about the storm itself possibly
having been responsible for the rapid ascent.
Thanks,
Gerry

When clouds are passing over; especially small clouds; the room can annoyingly
go bright-dark-bright-dark repeatedly.
Since the cost of LED lighting is fairly low, I'm thinking of blocking the

While I have been a fan of Solatube, I found that the Velux line that is

Andrew,

Daily commute is about 40 miles, 5x per week. Occasional pleasure trips to
Florida or Asheville NC now and then. My work travel has dropped off to
almost nothing now, had a trip up to WDC last fall. Previously I was
driving all over the south-east and up the eastern seaboard, but no more.
