That looks a little like my yard in Niceville FL after a small cat 1 storm.
The only government assistance was from the county; they contracted to haul
off debris after you piled it at the edge of the street. I had 110 ft of
frontage piled up to the CATV cables (except at the driveway) after several
storms. It was chain-saw serenade from sunup to sundown for a week. I live
inland in NC now and I don't miss those days. I must be getting old.

Re: [MBZ] Sandy

2012-10-31 Thread John Reames
I've got an old 220H that's been converted to run on kero; I keep a few gallons
of that and mineral spirits around. Iirc the big secret is to downsize the
orifice--the cleaning needle and the orifice out of a single mantle in the
generator body of a 2 mantle... I've also got a somewhat newish 2-burner that
seems just fine running vm&p.

Is it worth picking up an old sportster?

I was asked if we (I?) had a spare full cylinder for the gas grill... I also
got a couple of over-priced quarts of shelf-stable premix for the chainsaw.
Picked up a couple of 5 gal cans of #2 as well as ensuring everything had full
tanks...

I wired the generator in on a temp basis, and picked up a new DVD for little
dude. He ended up wanting to play scrabble instead!

He put the Q to good use (twice!), as well as the Z (off a triple word!) and
managed to pick up two more triple words. (Darned good for a 6 yr old!)

Needless to say the longest outage we had was 40 secs. Previously it's been
longer--emptied the fridge and freezer thrice in 18 mos!

2012-10-30 Thread Randy Bennell
You should get a backup pump. I bought one on sale and it is in the box
under the laundry tub. If the one in the sump pit quits, it won't take
me long to swap them (assuming I am home of course). We rarely have
water issues so I have not done an install of a battery backup unit.
Friends did as they had water issues and a very nicely developed basement.
We have had water in the basement twice in 31 years but I know how to
prevent it. Downspout extensions to move the water further from the
foundation seems to prevent the problem.

Not much to report here, some shingles blown off the house, neighbor lost a
spruce tree he didn't like anyway, thats firewood for me. Another neighbor lost
an above ground pool they'd foolishly drained the water out of.

Never lost power, never even had a serious blink that I saw. Some heavy wind
but our town basically sits on top of a hill so strong wind is nothing new here.

We've got patches of blue sky and some sun although CNN is indicating theres
more storm to come. The Google crisis map shows more rain coming. I'm going to
run out and see if I can't do a wheel bearing on my 240D before it rains again.

You'd suspect wrong.

It all started back in 2008 when we had the ice storm. I was moderately
prepared, Coleman stove, firewood, a little food.
We lost power for a day and a half on that one. I got nervous because we didn't
have much food or fuel, had to go for camp gas during the outage, paid through
the nose, much stress and anxiety.

This storm was smooth sailing because of good preparations. We'll continue this
way...

Re: [MBZ] Sandy

2012-10-30 Thread Curt Raymond
T'weren't nothin. Apparently the float has to be able to slide on its arm to
properly trigger the pump. Some bugs had gotten in and built a happy little
home inside the float (which is basically donut shaped) so it couldn't slide
once they were evicted proper pump action was restored. We had maybe 1/4" of
water in the corner of the basement where the sump is until I realized that the
pump wasn't running. I've got a manual override (a string attached to the float
arm) so I can get it going if I need to.

We didn't have any water in the basement until about dark when it started to
really rain hard. I'd done some landscaping last spring to help run water away
from the house. It seems to have made a real difference, time was anytime it
rained we had a least a little water in the basement...

Things are just starting to ramp up as darkness falls. The rain is
getting serious and the wind is starting to gust. I'm not seriously
worried, we get some pretty good wind anyway.
I bought a gallon of camp fuel, I usually keep 2 gallons on hand so
this is just a backup, I've got 3 gallons of kerosene, 1 gallon of
mix gas for the generator and a half dozen 1# cans of propane plus 3
gallons for the grill. I put the battery charger on my 110ah battery
that will run lights and laptops, it was charged, which reminds me I
should put it on my spare group 49 battery, suspenders and belt
after all.
The woodstove is lit, the wood room is about 3/4 full, the outside
rack has a half cord under a tarp.

In a minute I'm going to roast a chicken for dinner, bake bread and
cook some turkey cutlets for lunch tomorrow.

No, correct that, my niece who works for A Government Agency had the day

all the hype and attention, Sandy might just throw in the towel and
head out to sea.

Re: [MBZ] Sandy

2012-10-28 Thread Rich Thomas
Here on the coast of the Lowcountry we got some much needed rain
yesterday with a bit of breeze but not much. Tide was VERY high
yesterday morning and this morning, a bit of surge due to the storm, and
full moon time too. The dolphins were enjoying it in Capt Sams Inlet
this morning so did not disturb them. I did not go over to the beach
but someone said there was some good surf going. The cold front is on
its way, quite breezy today and will be getting chilly the next few days
and nights.

My son is in DC, and my niece and family -- my boy said he was going to
fill the bathtub (you do this when a storm is coming!) and my niece
stocked up on wine and cheese as the grocery was out of TP and other
less-important staples. Track looks like it headed north a bit now from
what it was yesterday. On my cycling adventure this morning I met a guy
who said he was from Connecticut, must live on the shore or something as
he said storms like that flood his house. Not sure why he is here, but
he seemed both worried and glad not to be there.

Our local electric utility (TECO) is marshaling their people in anticipation of
some serious damage and outages. I was driving by one of their depots last
night and I could see the crews getting their stuff ready.

Was driving up I-71 last night and passed a convoy of 50+ tree service
trucks heading north with plates from down south.

Someone is expecting a lot of damage.
