[MBZ] St Louis fest? Preliminary thoughts and ramblings

2005-09-28 Thread tom savage

Hi everyone,
I've been thinking a bit more about the idea of a St Louis get together,
and I've come up with the following ideas:

Date: I am thinking that perhaps October 22 might be good. It is still
far enough in advance to make arrangements (hopefully), but the weather
should still be decent, with fall colors still in bloom. Our
illustrious leader can likely make the trip all the way from Oklahoma
this weekend, as well. Would this date cause any problems for any
interested parties?

Actvities: The Kemp Auto Museum (http://kempautomuseum.com/) will of
course be the centerpiece of the event. It isn't huge, but we could
easily spend hours there. Afterwards we could stage an impromtu
concours d'oilleak on the museum forecourt. What else we do depends on
the desires of attendees, ie carcentric, familycentric, raucous
hellraisingcentric, etc.

There are many great winding country roads through the wine country of
nearby St Charles county that would make for a nice senic
tour/rallye/inaugural run of the Chesterfield Valley Grand Prix (to be
contested under Formula Diesel rules; SL owners must first sign release
form).

There's also the St Louis Science Center (http://www.slsc.org/) and City
Museum (http://citymuseum.org/) if you're looking for something more
family-oriented (and fun for kids of all ages). And of course there's
this big arch-shaped thing downtown.

St Louis also is home to a great Italian district with many excellent
restaurants (http://www.diningstl.com/TheHill.htm).

The "what do we do" is pretty malleable, depending on how many people
come from out of town, how long you wish to stay, and so on. The date
is fairly flexible, too, if a lot of people have conflicts that weekend.

So please let me know if you're interested, or if you have any thoughts
about what to do, or when to do it. This sounds like fun.

2005-09-28 Thread Peter Frederick

Tom:

Sounds like fun, I'm only a couple hours away, so can make it an easy
day trip, provided fuel isn't $50 a gallon by then. Might drag my
brother and nephew along, too -- we'd have to flip a coin to see which
car to take, we have six Benzez between us!

Kemp museum, scenic wine country rally followed by an
Italian dinner sounds GREAT. I will come and imagine
that 2 other MB dieselers I work with will come too.
Now do I bring the SD or the TD? Wife's new TD is

Hi Chris,
Well, No one has written with any conflicts yet, so the 22nd looks good.

So far the "interested parties" list includes:
Peter Frederick (and family?)
Deneal Schilmeister and Miss Bee
Kaleb and Regina Striplin
Christopher McCann
Jim Vogel (I hope!)
Chris' other coworker (Justin?)
OK Don
Rick Knoble

Still waiting to hear from Mike Piles and LT Don.

Even this early and allowing for the usual party correction factor of
.5, we should still have enough people for a pretty good gathering.
I'll call the Kemp Museum and see if I can finagle a group rate. And
the weather is absolutely gorgeous today; I might have to go "interview"
some wine country roads. :)

You can get decent BBQ here, but we're greatly overshadowed by KC. I
like to think of St Louis as a beer town - by which I mean Schlafly, not
the Budweiser swill :)

Well, I can't call it "for sure", but I can probably make it.

One of my favorite road sections is MO94 from Dutow (MO47) to about 4
miles west of Defiance - as long as there aren't too many slow-pokes...

Another decent, shorter section is Cnty "W" from Eureka to House
Springs.

Or IL3 from Chester to Cairo - though I suppose that's a bit too far
from STL.

MO79 from I70 to Louisiana - or even all the way to Hannibal can be
nice.

IL100 from Alton to Grafton is also a pretty drive.

That's all I'm thinking of that are kinda close to Metro St. Louis.
(not counting IL3 - that one's not close...)

Philip, who has been on a small road or two.

2005-10-07 Thread Christopher McCann
My wife is due on the 31st...so that is probably still
an OK date...she was only early once, by six days, so
I think I'm OK, esp since I'm only going to be 4 hours
away...not like I couldn't get back in a pinch if I
had too.

Jim is out that weekend, unfortunately as is Jason who
will be in CA for software training.

Maybe my wife will be interested in coming
along...anyway, I am in. Another friend just got a
nice 240D and will ask him if he wants to come. The KC
Old MB Oil Burner Club is growing by leaps and bounds!

Hi Chris,
Well, No one has written with any conflicts yet, so
the 22nd looks good.

So far the "interested parties" list includes:
Peter Frederick (and family?)
Deneal Schilmeister and Miss Bee
Kaleb and Regina Striplin
Christopher McCann
Jim Vogel (I hope!)
Chris' other coworker (Justin?)
OK Don
Rick Knoble

Still waiting to hear from Mike Piles and LT Don.

Even this early and allowing for the usual party
correction factor of
.5, we should still have enough people for a pretty
good gathering.
I'll call the Kemp Museum and see if I can finagle a
group rate. And
the weather is absolutely gorgeous today; I might
have to go "interview"
some wine country roads. :)

Another decent, shorter section is Cnty "W" from Eureka to House
Springs.

You have excellent taste! Most of my experience with the widing roads
of Missouri wine country has been behind the wheel of a Brown, alas; I
was probably one of those slow-pokes. Sorry about that...

Or IL3 from Chester to Cairo - though I suppose that's a bit too far
from STL.

Well, IL 3 does run right up next to the river through East St Louis and
the Sauget strip club district. Very close to St Louis, but perhaps an
area we would be wise to avoid.

IL100 from Alton to Grafton is also a pretty drive.

It is, and it goes on seemingly forever. But there's just something
about the straight and flat that leaves me wanting.

Still whittling down the choices for next weekend.

first ever was definitely a LARGE, 40:1 compression,
gasoline powered 1 cylinder. It blew up.

I meant to say Busch's first diesel, though I've never had it confirmed.
Is that the one you're referring to?

See you soon.
