Re: [MBZ] Todays job

2012-11-05 Thread Max Dillon
It's not very clear from my email, so here's a list of what got done.
Disconnected refrigerant lines, electrical power, low voltage lines, and
removed outside unit.
Disconnected same from air handler under house, plus supply air duct and return
air duct, and condensate drain, and removed air handler.
Ran new refrigerant line set ~45 feet under house, after removing old.
Installed new outside unit, brazed refrigerant lines while sweeping with
nitrogen, made electrical and low voltage connections.
Repaired kink in new line buy cutting out damage and brazing in a coupler.
Put new air handler in position, connected supply and return ducting. Had to
fabricate a plate to reduce the size of the supply air duct opening on the air
handler.

That was about twelve hours of work for me.

2012-11-04 Thread Max Dillon
Late start on Saturday, full day today, have only two copper lines to braze to
the new air handler, then electrical connections, then drain line.

Of course, once the brazing is complete, then pressure and vacuum testing of
the new lines.

Yesterday I thought I'd done a good job brazing the connections at the outside
unit, but I had not. Moved the unit a little, joint failed.

Went back to brazing school, read a few articles, watched a you-tube video,
switched to my oxygen-MAPP torch, practiced on a piece of scrap. Figured out
what I had done wrong (not enough heat), corrected that and got those two
joints done.

Re: [MBZ] Todays job

2012-11-03 Thread WILTON

'Nother ATTABOY!
I helped a heating/cooling technician/installer friend in Warner Robins, GA,
install several heat pumps in '67/'68. When I moved to Raleigh in Jun '68,
I bought a house that had gas-fired forced warm air heating system but did
not have cooling. 'Friend in GA ordered cooling equipment from his
wholesaler/supplier in Atlanta for me, and they shipped it to me. Week or
so later, friend came to visit for weekend; he and I installed the equipment
on Sat. Years later, here in Goldsboro after I retired from AF 31 years
ago, I bought a house to "flip;" it had electric resistance heating in
ceiling and no cooling system. I ordered heat pump from wholesaler/supplier
in Atlanta and installed it myself. Also added bathroom and did bunch of
other stuff to the house. BTW, 'don't remember getting permit for them.

Ah, well given that the going local rate is $5k installed, if DIY lasts
about ten years, I'll be happy. I paid $1600 for this unit.

Sorry.

Liebert is essentially the "gold standard" in the raised floor computer
room/server farm environmental and electrical infrastructure. They make
chillers and UPS systems that are probably used in 90% of the computer rooms in
corporate America, if not worldwide.

Stulz, well, suffice to say they're sort of the Yugo of the market, I guess. I
don't know much about them, as I've never seen any of their equipment, but I
have heard stories.

A diversity of feelings - upset with self for "ruining" a good controller;
elation at finding that it's still good, anyway, and not having to order
over-priced replacement; regret for not checking it thoroughly earlier;
disappointment in not knowing why it wouldn't work after the pop, etc.

get a head unit put in after that is done. funfunfun

On a related note, I have this (pricey) fan control I thought I had fried
back in the summer when I tested it out by plugging it into an extension
cord. Heard a pop and then it would not work. So yesterday, wanting to
get that sorted out, I was gonna order another one, but $55, ouch. So I
took this one apart, it is kinda interesting in that it has a push-buttton
power switch that sends power to the fan and the little low voltage RF
transmitter board to tell the fan what to do when you push the various
control buttons. Nothing looked toasted, I put the meter on a coupla
components, they looked OK. So I put it back together and hooked it up
again, this time to a switched extension cord outlet I made up (I don't
have power in the addition yet). SUCCESS Fan fans, speeds up/down,
reverses, lights light, dim, etc. That has been annoying me for months
so I can delete that from my stack.

I don't believe Goodman is related to anything except Amana.
Amana Distinctions = Goodman in beige paint.
Real Amana stuff has some improvements, like their furnaces have all stainless
heat exchangers while the Goodman/Distinctions furnaces have aluminized
primaries and stainless secondaries (all the condensation takes place in the
secondary unless the installer did something very wrong or the homeowner sets
the thermostat below 55°).

Install a new heat pump and air handler for our downstairs, replacing dead
Carrier unit which is 18 years old. Goodman unit going in. Toughest part
will be all the connections to the air handler, working in a crawl space.
