Re: [MBZ] Tracing electrical wiring
It will work either way - it doesn't care which end is connected to what. I've heard them called a "toner" - puts a "tone" signal on the wire, and has a receiver to hear where it goes. Since it goes into conduit (I assume metal?), you'll need to go to all possible termination points to listen for the tone. One possibility that comes to mind is a big ventilation fan somewhere (since I just installed a small one in the hangar). Re: [MBZ] Tracing electrical wiring
Do it the old way? Turn on all the lights and plug a light into every outlet then leave it on and turn all the other breakers off and them look for what still works. Or turn it off and all the others on and see what doesn't work. Re: [MBZ] Tracing electrical wiring
If the circuit squealer doesn't work (you should have one anyway), maybe a metal-detector will? 'Gold-hunt' your way to the end of the conduit? Won't work if there's other conduit at the start point, unless you can open the wall enough to find out where it starts to go. Or if your building has metal studs. Re: [MBZ] Tracing electrical wiring
It might not be an outlet, might be in a box or connected to some equipment. Conduit of BX might block the signal, I don’t know. --FT Sent from iFōn > On Aug 27, 2022, at 12:12 AM, Craig via Mercedes > wrote: > > On Fri, 26 Aug 2022 23:01:15 -0400 Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes > wrote: > >> Hook it to the conductor coming off the breaker and walk around with >> the rcvr, or chase it away from the breaker box through the walls. > > When tracing which breaker connects to which outlet, one puts the > receiver quite close (even on) the breaker. I believe that there is a device that can be attached to the circuit that will put a high frequency signal on the wire, which then acts as a broadcast antenna. A separate device acting as a receiver can be used to trace the wire behind the wall. I don't know exactly what it's called or how expensive it is. [MBZ] Tracing electrical wiring
In looking at the breaker box in the building here for possible installation of a 30 A breaker, I found there already is one installed.
