[MBZ] Update

2023-02-03 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I am not sure if this will come thru or not, but I have had a server space
issue which appears to have prevented emails from flowing. Periodically I have
to remove the list archives and scrubbed attachments or they clog up the system
after a while. This is still ongoing as the web host support has been slow to
resolve this.

Re: [MBZ] Update on the GL starter

2022-12-26 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
On my 98 Jetta the starter is the front motor mount, or they share a bolt
anyway.
The engine ground also shares that bolt. I didn't realize it the time I took it
out ...

Tank is installed back in the car. I probably should have ordered new hoses for
the line out of the tank and from the pump to the supply line they do not
appear to have been leaking, but they are also stiff as a board. I will see
what they cost and how soon I can get them. The return lines and vent lines are
dry rotted and need to be replaced but it’s just regular hose by the foot.

Yes there is, as is always true: elsewhere. Surely you're familiar with it?

I've always enjoyed working for the smaller companies most. It depends on
the kinds of BS you prefer.

Owner placing ignoramus in charge of other people shows that he has no
sense whatsoever. Successful family-run businesses start the kids at the
_bottom_ of things, so they learn the ropes. One that does otherwise is
probably doomed. Failure to keep promises is equally fatal. What you have
there is an example of a bad small business.

I don't recall if offer #2 salary was better than offer #1? Even though he
plans to decline it, if the salary is more he could maybe use it as leverage to
get #1 to to bump up the starting salary.

No time better than on the way in to get as big a raise as you can. It's COLA
after that in many places.

Re: [MBZ] Update on Hildegard, 1982 240D

2020-11-20 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
They need a copy of the factory service manual, and they need to properly
adjust (and perhaps repair) all the throttle linkages first. If they can't
do that, you'll need to take the car to a garage that can do that. The
service manual is free online (but painful to use to get to the proper
pages).

https://www.startekinfo.com/docs?cat=MB%20Workshop%20Resources

I do hope, for your sake, that they have not tried to adjust the pump
timing!

Very very rarely is the problem in the injection pump. Usually a rough
idle is due to a bad injector or two, unbalanced injectors, valves out of
adjustment, or a leak in a fuel line allowing air into the system. Rough
idle at start-up (while engine is below operating temperature) can also be
caused by a bad glow plug or two.

The only parts of the injection pump that may contribute to a rough idle
are the delivery valves. The copper sealing rings (and perhaps the
springs) need to be replaced every hundred thousand miles or so. I would
not trust anyone other than a certified Bosch shop or a long-time Mercedes
Diesel mechanic to attempt this job, because if you screw it up, the pump
needs to be removed from the car for adjustment, rebuild, or replacement.

Actually, it’s 20mm to get a 10mm clearance. There’s a hole in the middle that
a pin on the vacuum valve goes in.

One word Contract It puts the deal on a professional level right
from the start.. You write the contract with performance clause that
clearly states what is to be done, the delivery time for finished
work, inspection, and most importantly, Value... with clear language to the
quality of work and what is acceptable to you before you sign off on the
job in exchange for a dollar value, to be accepted by worker as payment in
kind in so many days of rent, clearly stated on a per day value..

Then, when you go to court, should you go to court... you have a document,
signed by all parties, to bring to the judge... and you have a leg to stand
on for claim.

He said.. She said... verbal claims hold no legal value in court... put it
in written form.. signed and dated..

It's life as a landlord.. or you get to lose..

Contractor to do work in exchange for rent. Sounds like another dead beat loser
situation. Don’t fall into that trap. Screen your renters well. Do credit
check, proof of employment etc. If that area doesn’t attract non loser tenants
then sell the house.

OSB can take a certain amount of short-term moisture. After all, it's
common for houses that are under construction to get rained on before
the roof is on. If you can get it properly dried out and it's still
solid it's probably OK.

I understand the temptation to have the contractor fix the place up in
lieu of rent but accounting-wise it may be cleaner if there's a clear
paper trail of him paying the rent and you paying him for his
services. Same difference in the end but when you deduct all your
business losses on this rental from your taxes next year, the
documentation may be helpful.

It’s so tempting. I’m honestly not sure what we are going to do at this point.
We had a guy come over who is a contractor that was originally scheduled to
view the house to lease when we were showing it but had to cancel due to a
family deal. We got him over together to work up quotes for the utility room in
order to sue the past renters. We also sent him over to my dads house to do
some work. When we discovered the bathroom issue he came back over to look at
that as well. He was interested in possibly working out a deal with him doing
the work and us taking a portion off rent for a certain amount of time till
whatever number he comes up with is paid. Waiting on a number. The other
alternative is to simply do the work ourselves as originally planned, carry the
mortgage for a couple of months then relist it again and start from scratch.
Could probably actually charge more as I think we had it priced too cheap in
the first place.

I went and bought a fan and crawled back under the house and set it up to dry
it out from underneath. As I said the floor joists still seemed solid and even
the OSB subfloor didn’t appear to be weak like it was about to fall thru. If we
simply dry it out and do not take up the tile in that bathroom and replace, I
am wondering if once it dries out it doesn’t start crumbling down the line.

Re: [MBZ] Update on the rental house

2020-08-09 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
The folks we signed a lease with that were due to move in next weekend were
told of the situation and it would probably be end of month at the earliest.
They wanted to come out and look. After a lengthy discussion and full
disclosure they said they still wanted to lease the house. We gave them the
option to refund their deposit. Later on they messaged us and decided after
thinking about it they decided they couldn’t move in there. I can’t blame them.
So now in addition to all the damage the old renters cost us a months worth of
time and the new renters. Will have to start from scratch.

2020-06-02 Thread Mitchell Haley EA via Mercedes
It might have been more fun if the 240D were manual, but this way you can
just build a 300D in a 240D donor body. Every part you need should be on
the 300D. I might be wrong, but I think the 240D auto is mechanically the
same, might have lower hydraulic pressures. 240D box with the valve body
from the dead 300D box might be an option.

You'll probably want to use a 300D differential.

I forget, is 1983 the last year for cheap license plates or the first year
for expensive plates?

[MBZ] Update - Engine swap 1984 300D to 1983 240D

Phase one is complete. I have removed the donor engine from the 84 300D with
a bad transmission. I am in the process of replacing the the front seal and
checking other components and replacing as needed.
Next phase is removing transmission from 2nd donor car. (83 300D). I’ve been
told by several that the 240D transmission won’t hold up to the additional
torque of the turbo engine.
I will need a new/used exhaust system. Does anyone have any information on a
used stainless system that is for sale. Rick was able to provide one for my
last project (85 300D) that is currently in Texas and being used as a daily
driver by my daughter.
Mike

I have a rust free 1983 240D with a worn out engine and a rusted out 84 300D
with a strong engine. Looking for a write up or link to any information on
moving the engine from 1984 300D turbo chassis to 1983 240D chassis
Both are automatics The 300D transmission is trash, will the 240D transmission
matchup to 300D without modifications or performance issues?
The 240 has manual HVAC that I want keep.

I’ve already moved the differential from the 300D to the 240D and like the
better highway performance however the 240 engine is pretty worn out and
showing its age.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

[MBZ] Update on Corona outbreak

2020-02-21 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Feb. 21, 2020 at 9:48 p.m. EST Washington Post online
Refresh for updates

For the third time in eight days — and the second time in 24 hours —
Chinese public health officials made changes Friday to their criteria for
counting coronavirus cases, once again sowing confusion over the widely
fluctuating figures
.
In a further sign of potential inconsistencies, an official in China’s
Hubei Health Commission suggested that agencies were not being transparent
and accurate in their reported case numbers.

Another death amid a surge in coronavirus cases in South Korea — many
traced to a church — also provoked fresh alarm Friday, after Chinese
authorities reported hundreds of new infections at prisons, undercutting
Beijing’s effort to show progress

in containing the deadly epidemic.

The prison outbreaks underscored the high transmissibility of the virus,
officially called SARS-CoV-2, in confined spaces. People on board the Diamond
Princess cruise ship

docked in Japan also have been hit hard by covid-19, the disease caused by
the virus.

Meanwhile, Lebanon and Israel reported their first coronavirus cases, and
infection numbers rose in Italy. By Friday night, Italy had reported its
first death from the virus: a 78-year-old man. Authorities in Iran also
reported two deaths among 13 new infections, raising the tally there to 18
cases.

Here are the latest developments:

●A second person died of covid-19 and cases in South Korea soared, with
investigators focusing on a church and hospital as clusters of infection in
the southern city of Daegu.

● Hundreds of passengers were disembarking from the Diamond Princess, but
the massive case load left questions about the rigor of quarantine and
testing procedures on board.

● Italy confirmed its first death from the virus Friday night. Earlier,
Israel announced its first coronavirus case — a Diamond Princess passenger
— while Lebanon reported its first infection — someone who had just
traveled from Iran.

● Beijing braced for a potential explosion of infection numbers in the
capital after two hospitals were put under quarantine.

● World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
said that Friday’s “significant decrease in confirmed cases is partly due
to another change in the way China reports numbers.”

Re: [MBZ] update on "Bob Dole" the 123

2019-10-04 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Best way to adjust the Bowden cable is to remove the cap from the ball, pull on
the cable until you feel resistance, and see if the cap on the cable lines up
over the ball on the linkage. If it doesn’t, carefully turn the threaded
adjusting but on the cable jacket end to move the cable so it lines up over the
ball.

In other words, with the slack taken out of the cable, the cap on the end of
the cable should fit directly over the ball without moving the cable.

Be careful turning the adjusting nut, as they can often stick or bind due to
dirt and aging of the plastic. You see a lot of them broken these days, either
from age or mishandling. If it’s broken, the only fix is replacement of the
cable, not a fun job.

The transmission shift points are INCREDIBLY sensitive to the adjustment of
underhood linkages etc. Like, one or two millimetres can radically change the
transmission's behaviour.

There is a detailed set of model-specific instructions in the MB 123 service
manual covering the systematic adjustment of all the linkages, which BEGINS
with ensuring that the accelerator control is set correctly (as its adjustment
affects the transmission).

That procedure also has plenty of photos of the various components, incl. the
Bowden cable and the vacuum controls present on many 123 and 126 models.

Yeah, just pop the end of the cable off the ball on the linkage. You
should pull it and get some good spring resistance, then it should go back
in by itself. If its very easy to pull and/or doesn't go back in, its
broken. Adjusted properly, it should just be under slight tension when the
linkage is idle, so it gets pulled as soon as the linkage moves.

2019-10-04 Thread Don Snook via Mercedes
I think you and Meade are exactly right. I don't think it shifted again
between 20 and 75. It sounded like it was revving pretty high at 70 mph. The
third little sets of dots is around 70 mph. This car DEFINITELY did not shift
again at those speeds. While I was driving here (500 mile trip that was 90%
highway) I don't think it shifted past 30 mph. But, I don't know specifically.
SO, now I need to figure out how to check the Bowden cable. That's the
little squiggly red cable thing, right?

I think you have a broken bowden cable.

Normally the transmission sits in second gear at idle and stationary. It
downshifts to first when you step on the accelerator any amount. When its
adjusted properly, you never even notice. This is to reduce creep.

Since you are starting in second gear and shifting early, It seems very likely
its the cable. That is, the transmission doesn't know you're accelerating.

In L, it will hold first gear unit redline no matter how hard you press the
accelerator. If you move it to S and back to L quickly, you'll be in second at
that point. Shift back up to S and you'll be in third. And D goes to forth if
you're going fast enough. Try winding out each gear like this to ensure you
can distinctly feel each one.

Its very likely you're not getting into 4th and you drove without any issues at
70mph for a long period of time.

You know that when he was running for president it apparently became
quite a joke in the Arab world, supposedly because "Dole" in arabic
means "penis."

Changed fuel filter (secondary big one) and I removed the banjo bolt and
cleaned it out. I am not sure why but I thought the banjo bolt was bigger.
It was definitely dirty. The little hole in the bolt was clogged up black
thick stuff. I did the oil cap blow by test. The cap danced a little. But,
not much. I was watching a video from Kent where he proposes an old diesel
cleanse. He takes vegetable oil and adds a little liquid moly oil supplement
and runs the car from an external tank and uses the whole gallon of vegetable
oil. It did seem to improve the smoothness and he claimed it could help with
blowby. I'm sure it can't hurt. I am going to try it later.

BUT, doing the diesel purge and cleaning out banjo bolt made a BIG difference.
Yes, it is still a slow diesel. But, it seemed a lot faster. I think the
vacuum modulator on the transmission might need to be addressed. The shifts
are very smooth. In fact, they may be so smooth I can't feel the second one.
It feels like it might be starting in second and then it shifts pretty early
and then I don't feel the next shift at all. I drove it to work today. SO,
at lunch I will try again to see if I can determine where the shifts occur.

Re: [MBZ] update on "Bob Dole" the 123

2019-10-04 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I think you have a broken bowden cable.

Normally the transmission sits in second gear at idle and stationary. It
downshifts to first when you step on the accelerator any amount. When its
adjusted properly, you never even notice. This is to reduce creep.

Since you are starting in second gear and shifting early, It seems very
likely its the cable. That is, the transmission doesn't know you're
accelerating.

In L, it will hold first gear unit redline no matter how hard you press the
accelerator. If you move it to S and back to L quickly, you'll be in
second at that point. Shift back up to S and you'll be in third. And D
goes to forth if you're going fast enough. Try winding out each gear like
this to ensure you can distinctly feel each one.

Its very likely you're not getting into 4th and you drove without any
issues at 70mph for a long period of time.

2019-10-04 Thread Don Snook via Mercedes
Ok. I took it for a drive for lunch. I think these start out in second unless
it is floored then the kickdown works. So, I left work and floored it. I
think it was still in second and it shifted at about 18-20 mph. Then, I don't
think it shifted again. Really. I never felt another shift. So, I tried
taking a side road. I pulled over and put the shifter into L. I assume that
means it is in first. I let the revs get pretty high and moved it up to S and
it shifted. Then, I went ahead and moved it to D. It still did not shift
again. Could this be starting in second and then staying in third without
getting to 4th or overdrive? When the tach was working on the trip back 75 mpg
was about 3100 rpm which would be pretty accurate. But, when I drove it on the
highway it felt like one shift from 2-3 and then no more shifts. It just
stayed in that gear all the way to 70 mph. I couldn't go faster than that
because of traffic and cops. I pulled onto an on -ramp and floored it. It had
already shifted, but even at 30-35 with it floored, it never down shifted.

To dial in the trans, I recommend you get an actual pressure gauge and set the
modulator pressure by the book. It takes the guess work out of it and really
does hit that perfect balance between soft and firm shifts. There are a few
cheap gauge kits out there and connection is easy... just remove the plug next
to the modulator and connect up the hose to the gauge.

A little (like a gallon) veggie oil or biodiesel in the tank will make the
engine noticably quieter. Somebody told me the reason once but I've forgotten.

[MBZ] update on "Bob Dole" the 123

2019-10-04 Thread Don Snook via Mercedes
I have taken to calling my new to me 123 "Bob Dole" It has to be said quickly
like the old Senator used to do when he referred to himself in the third
person. The reason for the possible name is

1. It is funny

2. I lived in Kansas for 17 years

3. The car is yellow (sort of) like a Dole Banana. ( I suppose I could
call it Chiquita)

Anyway, I took some advice from listers combined with the stuff from Kent
(Mercedes Source) and tried a few things last night. I did a diesel purge.

The corollary is that SWMBA will work twice as diligently to keep space from
becoming filled as the space fills. A balance is maintained until either the
space expands/declines or SWMBA tosses in the towel.

I have understood the theory of nature abhorring vacuums. I sold off my former
Benz parts collection a few years ago. That made all manner of space. Which
has been filled to the gills with more benz parts. Stuff I have no idea I had
at hand. I have spent the past few weeks going through these new finds and
attempting to get them adopted out to people who will actually use them. Where
did that set of M117 exhaust manifolds come from? And the w201 stuff? I never
had one.. how did that make a home here?
