Re: [MBZ] Whaddya Think?
I don't think the first R129's had the folding hardtop, but I can't find a definitive answer in a quick search. The R129 is based on the W124 and has many interchangable parts. from Wikipedia (YMMV): Designed in 1984, the R129 was based on the shortened floorpan of the Mercedes-Benz W124 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W124[2]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes_R129#cite_note-autogenerated1-2and featured many innovative details for the time, for instance electronically controlled damping (optional) and a hidden, automatically extending roll-over bar. The R107's rather dated rear diagonal swing axle gave way to a modern multi-link axle. The number of standard features was high, with electric action for the windows, mirrors, seats and convertible top. I don't think the first R129's had the folding hardtop, I didn't think _any_ of them did. Thought that showed up with the SLK. Just like 113 (?) and 107, it has both a folding soft top and a separate drop-on hard top. I was thinking $1500. If he bites, I would do it. There's nothing there that's so bad as to make it a money pit. I'm not taking any bets, however. I think the big deal killer is that it's not currently driveable. That will take it out of a lot of people's consideration unless they're nearby. That is the one thing I'm betting on. Very true. However, this is Dad's old car and Dad isn't around any more, nor does there appear to be any sort of sentiment in his effort to sell. Looks like it's taking up driveway space. I sent him a rather detailed note with my concerns and the justification for my offer. If anything, he shouldn't be offended. You can read between the lines in his very detailed description that deep down he knows this is a project car. Around here it' s worth maybe $5000 if it was in good running condition. Right now you can't move it out of the driveway without hitting it with a shot of ether. And if he is offended, well, TS. Dan On Aug 11, 2013, at 6:34 PM, Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] Whaddya Think?
at least you'll find outhow negotiable the price really is. It does sound like lot of work -- and these cars are not very easy to work on with very expensive parts. Also consider the cost of labor - even if you can do some yourself, most people can't -- I suggest you add labor and material to do all the work needed -- no matter what, it will only be worth 12-15K if in spectacular condition - they don't seem to bring much more unless _/pristine/_. Also, there are an awful lot of those cars around - If it were me I'd wait for a next generation SL as they look much more modern than the w107 chassis. Not sure about the late 80s but the earlier 450SLs didn't get very good mileag - a consideration in the day of $5/gal gas.unless you're independently wealthy. ;-) Good Luck -- Larry 91 300D On 8/11/2013 6:19 PM, Dan Penoff wrote: I was thinking $1500. I don't know why people get offended by lowball offers. If someone make me an offer that is too low, I just say sorry, I can't accept that. It's just an offer... not a personal insult! What does annoy me is if somone says something like would you take $1,500 and then if I say yes, they backpedal and say something like they are still looking around or want to think about it. I now ask are you offering to buy it right now for that price? before I answer. Also if I am buying I don't talk about price until I am ready to actually buy the car. Re: [MBZ] Whaddya Think cheapskate?
The M117 engine is pretty good, except that the timing chain guides need to replaced every now and then. This is a KE-jetronic (CIS/E) car, maybe the fuel pump relay going wonky? However it is a reliable system and reasonably simple. Of concern is the 'corrosion' on the engine, looks like it was near nasty stuff, like acid rain. Hate the colour of the interior, I thought they got rid of those colours back in the 70's. Rust! Like an iceberg, you only see the tip of it and rust repair is expensive. Yeah basically if that SL was rust free and had no issues then yeah 6-7k is about right but not in this state, soft top has tear, seats are dried out. Looks to me like it was not loved much. To make this a worthwhile thing, you gotta be able to do the work to get it up to a decent standard yourself. How much is a decent paint job these days? Do you know anything about the KE system? Do you know a good indie who knows these cars? Hendrik who does not own a SL On 12/08/13 08:51, Allan Streib wrote: I don't know why people get offended by lowball offers. I have a third generation (yes, that's third!) MB indie in town. The father (still living), two sons and a grandson or two are the business. They have forgotten more than the local stealerships will ever know. When I had my W112 the old man used to get the giggles whenever I brought it in, because he knew the chassis so well and rarely ever saw them. I can deal with all of the issues it has, except paint. and to be honest I would ignore it. From what the guy is describing the car sat for an extended time under a non-breathable cover in a shaded area (probably a car port.) This will almost always result in the failure of the clear coat, leaving it a milky color that won't come out. No fix for that short of a repaint. The interior is scary, but color resolution in digital photos is not all that great, so I wouldn't worry tht it's as bad as it looks. Well that sounds good then, guess all you can do is put your hat in the ring and see what happens, personally I would prefer a 420SL, 560 is overkilll for places with speed limits.
