Haven't paid attention to the R129, but it seems like you spend four figures

I bet a used R170 is a lot more likely to have undisclosed hydraulic issues than

2013-08-13 Thread OK Don
I don't think the first R129's had the folding hardtop, but I can't find a
definitive answer in a quick search.
The R129 is based on the W124 and has many interchangable parts.
from Wikipedia (YMMV):
Designed in 1984, the R129 was based on the shortened floorpan of the
Mercedes-Benz
W124
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W124[2]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes_R129#cite_note-autogenerated1-2and
featured many innovative details for the time, for instance
electronically controlled damping (optional) and a hidden, automatically
extending roll-over bar. The R107's rather dated rear diagonal swing axle
gave way to a modern multi-link axle. The number of standard features was
high, with electric action for the windows, mirrors, seats and convertible
top.

I didn't think _any_ of them did. Thought that showed up
with the SLK. Just like 113 (?) and 107, it has both a
folding soft top and a separate drop-on hard top.

Say what? 107's got the same IRS system as everything

Aren't the R129 retractable tops notoriously troublesome? I seem to

I suppose you could just keep the hardtop on the whole time. It looks

The M117 engine is pretty good, except that the timing chain guides need
to replaced every now and then.

This is a KE-jetronic (CIS/E) car, maybe the fuel pump relay going wonky?
However it is a reliable system and reasonably simple.
Of concern is the 'corrosion' on the engine, looks like it was near
nasty stuff, like acid rain.
Hate the colour of the interior, I thought they got rid of those colours
back in the 70's.
Rust! Like an iceberg, you only see the tip of it and rust repair is
expensive.
Yeah basically if that SL was rust free and had no issues then yeah 6-7k
is about right but not in this state, soft top has tear, seats are dried
out.

Looks to me like it was not loved much.
To make this a worthwhile thing, you gotta be able to do the work to get
it up to a decent standard yourself. How much is a decent paint job
these days?
Do you know anything about the KE system? Do you know a good indie who
knows these cars?

I have a third generation (yes, that's third!) MB indie in town. The father

forgotten more than the local stealerships will ever know. When I had my W112

the chassis so well and rarely ever saw them.

I can deal with all of the issues it has, except paint. and to be honest I
would ignore it. From what the guy is describing the car sat for an extended
time under a non-breathable cover in a shaded area (probably a car port.) This
will almost always result in the failure of the clear coat, leaving it a milky
color that won't come out. No fix for that short of a repaint.

The interior is scary, but color resolution in digital photos is not all that
great, so I wouldn't worry tht it's as bad as it looks.
