Re: [MBZ] argh, Wimmins!

2007-02-12 Thread Jim Cathey

Back in my days as an undergrad at the University of Texas (early
80's), there were 10 women in a class of 300 something. Later in grad
school, there were 2 out of 65 (and of course both of them were from
the Pacific rim somewhere).

My EE class (-of) had three, as I recall. Pure white bread,
though. I don't recall that there was much in the way of PR
types there at the time. A fair number from India, though.
My roommate was Samoan. A lab partner (F) was Icelandic.
Mostly I didn't/don't pay attention. Or particularly care!

I knew one of the three women fairly well, as I dated her
roommate for a time, and we had nearly identical intra- and
extra-curricular schedules for four years. Engineering
wasn't in her soul, for her that career choice was a business
decision. Most of the rest of us were geeks, doomed to the
field, and she'd look at us like we were under glass.

I did enjoy that one of my friends, a callous handsome fellow
that left a wake, had a crush on her. She looked at him like
he was a bug. I couldn't help but think he deserved it!

Ahh, mam... err, MEMories!

Ah, so at our MBCA event tomorrow at the dealer we're going to learn

This might seem rather fundamental but I suspect that a huge percent

Also having a son in Mech Engineering I can assume you that picking

Or is that anti-clockwise... Sad and scary...

PS yes although the eng dept hands out millions in bursaries to women

Yes Jim - no interest in changing the arrangement. It's one of the subtle

Wow. Some pretty amazing tales. Guess I don't have as much to complain (to
myself) about as I thought.

I enjoy asking a woman who has just proclaimed that women can do anything
men can do if she can change a car tire. The cycling group I sometimes
ride

in has some female lawyers and surgeons, etc. They can't fix a flat on
their bikes.

I think that some women are quite happy with this arrangement, but others
literally don't know how to do the task.

she does. Regularly. And she's always so proud of how clean

I dried the spare tire well, and cleaned out the drain holes. (The

pump themselves from flooding, but the wiring still gets wet.)

#3 I assume you already pre-warm her car on cold days - which is even
appreciated down here when it drops down below 50.
#4 Once more, being retired makes it easier, but I take flowers to her

nice touch. That won't work this time of year for many because of that
pesky white stuff that tends to drop from the sky, but a stop in a field
 of
flowers on occasion when you can is also a nice touch at other times.
#3 I assume you already pre-warm her car on cold days - which is even
appreciated down here when it drops down below 50.
#4 Once more, being retired makes it easier, but I take flowers to her
office every week, and we date every Friday, complete with my asking her
 out
like I did when we were dating. Sometimes that is at home with a nice set
up and a dinner I cook or one we cook together.
As many have discovered, what you invest your time and interest in
becomes what you love [that is even biblical...]. That investment in your
spouse is even more important than the invested time / energy / money in
your Benz. To turn around the often used phrase, when momma is happy,
everybody is happy - especially me.
By the way, I'm getting mine an immersion stick blender. Not
especially romantic [I think I have that convered already] and cheap
 enough,
but something she wants [I listen to her], and a hand made card is easy
 and
cheap, and means you cared more than walking into a store and buying the
 first card you saw.

Re: [MBZ] argh, Wimmins!

2007-02-09 Thread Zoltan Finks

Sure, each gender tends to play a role, and responsibilities are worked out
within the relationship. I take out the trash and she changes the sheets on
the bed. We never verbally worked this out. We each really cook for
ourselves, but I hate to tell you, she (wifey) shows more proclivity for
cooking, and I have none. If she finds herself cooking for me, she gets very
defensive, but she still finds herself doing it once in a while despite the
fact that I have NEVER asked her to do so. Gender differences is all I'm
sayin' - like it or not.

But I'm speaking to the ineptitude that women naturally have for
understanding the way mechanical things work. Yes, physical strength comes
into play, but setting that aside, the majority of women literally do not
know how to change a tire.

Fun stuff.

2007-02-07 Thread Curt Raymond
So my wife calls The truck won't turn. WHAT? What in hell could be wrong.
Well, in fact the truck won't start, she ment the truck won't turn over.
Now she claims this is what she said last weekend when the transmission was
messed up.
Anyway I ask her do the lights come on? Sure all lights are a go, the truck had
just stalled and now won't restart. Did she try to restart in the road? Yes but
now she's pulled over in park. Oh, well it won't restart in drive, but now
she's in park. Put it in neutral we've had trouble with the neutral safety
switch but its like once a month so I haven't bothered to mess with it. Truck
starts right up.
We've been through this like twenty times, she knows what the neutral safety
switch is, knows its failing or out of adjustment or whatever, KNOWS the fix
just can't think to do it on her own...

I'm amazed sometimes, its like trying to teach my mother to use the computer.

both had the original shop manuals at one time but mine went with a 83 =

sold.

Any help would be appreciated.

So my wife calls The truck won't turn. WHAT? What in hell could be
wrong.

Well, in fact the truck won't start, she ment the truck won't turn over.
Now she claims this is what she said last weekend when the transmission
was messed up.
Anyway I ask her do the lights come on? Sure all lights are a go, the
truck had just stalled and now won't restart. Did she try to restart in
the road? Yes but now she's pulled over in park. Oh, well it won't restart
in drive, but now she's in park. Put it in neutral we've had trouble
with the neutral safety switch but its like once a month so I haven't
bothered to mess with it. Truck starts right up.
We've been through this like twenty times, she knows what the neutral
safety switch is, knows its failing or out of adjustment or whatever,
KNOWS the fix just can't think to do it on her own...

I'm amazed sometimes, its like trying to teach my mother to use the
computer.

That does sound like tight valves, keeping the compression too low to build
up enough heat to combust the fuel. And yes, with everything working
properly (glow system, fuel, battery) I still believe that 10 seconds is
plenty long enough (I get concerned if I don't hear the engine fire up after
3 revolutions, which isn't very long at all).
My JD4100 (1 liter, 3 cyl Diesel) which doesn't get run often in the winter,
may take 5-8 revolutions to fire up, which still is probably only 5 seconds
or so! And it has no block heater, and the battery is 5 years old.

The car is a 300D, we don't have a garage, so it sits by the curb. It was
8 F (-14 C?) and had not been plugged in at all, should the 5-10 second
 crank before still hold true?

The fuel is from the same location as the OM606 that started without
issue, the GP relay was replaced within the past 14 mos (due to the old
one being filled with water--the O-ring between the two halves of the unit
was broken along the side where it mounts, so it could pull in water via
cappilary action), and the GP's were replaced shortly before the relay. I
suspect a couple of valves may be tight.

I put the battery on charge (but did not plug in the block heater) and
went out ~8-10 hours later, when it was up to 18 F and it did start,
although it did require cranking while firing (approx 20-30 secs) until it
 ran smoothly.

I'm going to check the valves this weekend.

I would think that an engine requiring more than 5-10 seconds of cranking
 is
in need of something else - like properly operating glow plugs, or
 ungelled
or not ice-blocked fuel. I'm assuming you've been regularly putting
 decent
fuel in the tank, so that should be winterized in this zone; that leaves
glow plugs - fuses, controls, and lastly, the plugs themselves.

I know this thread is supposed to feed into a larger gender stereotype about
chicks not getting car stuff, but having worked as a mechanic in the past,
I can tell you that there are a vast vast vast number of men out there who
are equally or more clueless about these matters. In some way they're
actually worse, since as men, they feel social pressure to know car stuff,
but lack the capacity to adequately hide their ignorance, and come off
sounding really stoopid in the process.
