Re: [MBZ] argh, Wimmins!
Back in my days as an undergrad at the University of Texas (early 80's), there were 10 women in a class of 300 something. Later in grad school, there were 2 out of 65 (and of course both of them were from the Pacific rim somewhere). My EE class (-of) had three, as I recall. Pure white bread, though. I don't recall that there was much in the way of PR types there at the time. A fair number from India, though. My roommate was Samoan. A lab partner (F) was Icelandic. Mostly I didn't/don't pay attention. Or particularly care! I knew one of the three women fairly well, as I dated her roommate for a time, and we had nearly identical intra- and extra-curricular schedules for four years. Engineering wasn't in her soul, for her that career choice was a business decision. Most of the rest of us were geeks, doomed to the field, and she'd look at us like we were under glass. I did enjoy that one of my friends, a callous handsome fellow that left a wake, had a crush on her. She looked at him like he was a bug. I couldn't help but think he deserved it! Ahh, mam... err, MEMories! -- Jim

Actually, doesn't Danika have a team of men changing her tires? Yes Jim - no interest in changing the arrangement. It's one of the subtle ways they exercise their power. Like when they ask you how they look. Funny how they want your opinion on how they look before you go out, but she thinks that she has to dress you because you're incompetent to do so. Brian - 1st, keep in mind that I am retired and an early riser - and enjoy the physical contact. #1 My bride of 32 years would rather stay up late and sleep until noon, but has to leave for work by 7:30 AM. One of the things I have done for her is become her alarm clock for a time - only I use a back rub. 10 - 20 minutes every morning. We both enjoyed it enough that it lasted for a year [4 months out now because of botched surgery and a fall breaking her humerus in 5 places, and she still can't relax on her stomach]. I'd suggest a week to start. I also found lotion with the fragrance of her favorite perfume [pretty cheap on eBay], but that does start to cost. #2 Another cheap and appreciated thing is flowers. Where I live there are flowers in the yard year around [had to take a foot off some Impatients last week], and one in an appropriate container in her car in the morning is a nice touch. That won't work this time of year for many because of that pesky white stuff that tends to drop from the sky, but a stop in a field of flowers on occasion when you can is also a nice touch at other times. #3 I assume you already pre-warm her car on cold days - which is even appreciated down here when it drops down below 50. #4 Once more, being retired makes it easier, but I take flowers to her office every week, and we date every Friday, complete with my asking her out like I did when we were dating. Sometimes that is at home with a nice set up and a dinner I cook or one we cook together. As many have discovered, what you invest your time and interest in becomes what you love [that is even biblical...]. That investment in your spouse is even more important than the invested time / energy / money in your Benz. To turn around the often used phrase, when momma is happy, everybody is happy - especially me. By the way, I'm getting mine an immersion stick blender. Not especially romantic [I think I have that convered already] and cheap enough, but something she wants [I listen to her], and a hand made card is easy and cheap, and means you cared more than walking into a store and buying the first card you saw. Re: [MBZ] argh, Wimmins!
Sure, each gender tends to play a role, and responsibilities are worked out within the relationship. I take out the trash and she changes the sheets on the bed. We never verbally worked this out. We each really cook for ourselves, but I hate to tell you, she (wifey) shows more proclivity for cooking, and I have none. If she finds herself cooking for me, she gets very defensive, but she still finds herself doing it once in a while despite the fact that I have NEVER asked her to do so. Gender differences is all I'm sayin' - like it or not. But I'm speaking to the ineptitude that women naturally have for understanding the way mechanical things work. Yes, physical strength comes into play, but setting that aside, the majority of women literally do not know how to change a tire. Fun stuff. And yes, with everything working properly (glow system, fuel, battery) I still believe that 10 seconds is plenty long enough (I get concerned if I don't hear the engine fire up after 3 revolutions, which isn't very long at all). My JD4100 (1 liter, 3 cyl Diesel) which doesn't get run often in the winter, may take 5-8 revolutions to fire up, which still is probably only 5 seconds or so! The car is a 300D, we don't have a garage, so it sits by the curb. It was 8 F (-14 C?) and had not been plugged in at all, should the 5-10 second crank before still hold true? The fuel is from the same location as the OM606 that started without issue, the GP relay was replaced within the past 14 mos (due to the old one being filled with water--the O-ring between the two halves of the unit was broken along the side where it mounts, so it could pull in water via cappilary action), and the GP's were replaced shortly before the relay. I suspect a couple of valves may be tight. I put the battery on charge (but did not plug in the block heater) and went out ~8-10 hours later, when it was up to 18 F and it did start, although it did require cranking while firing (approx 20-30 secs) until it ran smoothly. I'm going to check the valves this weekend. -j. - Original message -- From: Werner Fehlauer [EMAIL PROTECTED] I would think that an engine requiring more than 5-10 seconds of cranking is in need of something else - like properly operating glow plugs, or ungelled or not ice-blocked fuel. I'm assuming you've been regularly putting decent fuel in the tank, so that should be winterized in this zone; that leaves glow plugs - fuses, controls, and lastly, the plugs themselves.
Re: [MBZ] argh, Wimmins!
I know this thread is supposed to feed into a larger gender stereotype about chicks not getting car stuff, but having worked as a mechanic in the past, I can tell you that there are a vast vast vast number of men out there who are equally or more clueless about these matters. In some way they're actually worse, since as men, they feel social pressure to know car stuff, but lack the capacity to adequately hide their ignorance, and come off sounding really stoopid in the process.
