even a fire extinguisher would have put it out. Anyway, I guess I should have
sold it previously. That car was a turd from the get go.

Yes, another state would be easier. But there are customers here. And I
don't have much interest in moving at this point.

That is not the only reason to do this. I _always_ use two spaces after
a stop, because periods are not always full stops. E. M. Forster would agree.

Also, in _source_ form many editors, like the emacs I favor, can navigate by
sentences and paragraphs. Without two spaces, it's not a sentence. When
working on the HTML source to my blog, for example, two spaces _dramatically_
eases working on it.

The renderer should not care how many spaces are after the period, it should
be smart enough to do the right thing regardless. But having dot-space-space
be unambiguously a full stop can only help give it extra clues to work with.

I submit that those who argue against the extra space are being just as
parochial
as those who try to center lines on the page by putting spaces on the front.
_Both_
are confusing form with function.

Good catches, Jim, I saw those as well.

I also saw on the “About Us” page in the first paragraph “engrained”, but
surprisingly (to me) that is a correct (alternative) spelling for “ingrained”.

It’s not in the AP stylebook, but most dictionary sites are showing it as a
proper spelling.

Don’t sweat it, Jaime, you got the idea across and only grammar nerds like us
would notice…

On your home page,

Attention to detail

It's our goal to ensure your car performs as it was originally intended.
We use the highest quality parts, follow the manufacture's
specifications, and focus on every detail to ensure each job is done
properly. Our mindset is to ensure long-term reliability so your car can
be enjoyed today and by future generations.

In additional functional repairs, we can cosmetically restore mechanical
systems as well.

As Jim pointed out, "follow the manufacture's" should be, "follow the
manufacturer's"

The last sentence should read,

In addition to functional repairs, we can cosmetically restore
mechanical systems.

Factory Maintenance and Repairs

From spark plugs to valve adjustments and fluid changes we use parts and
procedures that meet Mercedes-Benz specifications to keep your car
running its best.

The sentence should have a comma after "changes" (I think -- Shirley said
I was too quick to put in commas).

Jaime has been fantastic to deal with – he’s a huge car enthusiast and a
very talented mechanic! I have 3 classic Mercedes that I’ve trusted with
Jaime the last few years. He is very knowledgeable, professional and a
man of integrity. Values that are hard to find these days. I can’t
recommend him highly enough.

Having owned 7 classic Mercedes-Benz cars, having the right shop perform
needed work is as important as finding the right car. With my most recent
acquisition, a 1971 113-280SL, I was having an interment issue for over a
year. Three previous shops were unable to resolve the issue, I then
found Jaime @ Classic Workshop. The car runs better than the day I bought
it, wouldn’t consider going anywhere else. Thank You.

On your "About" page,

As sales representative in the medical device industry, my father put a
lot of miles on his cars. And since I was was 4 years old, his car was
always a Mercedes-Benz. He always had so much pride in his cars. It was
about quality, reliability, and longevity. How at 300,000 miles the car
still performed as it did when new. This concept of quality has always
been engrained in me. Maintenance was key: prevent failures before they
happen, do the job the right way, and don’t cut corners.

On the web page, in this paragraph, the word "How" is indented.

On the web page, in the third paragraph, the word "Eleven" is indented.

By the way, using typewriters with the constant spacing Courier font, we
got used to putting two spaces after periods. With variable spacing
fonts, however, only one space is necessary after a period because the
font's spacing mechanism is supposed to take care of it.

The traditional gas station repair shop doesn't work for the classic

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] Little Jamie

2023-02-19 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I rented a pretty large space in a commercial building. I had to get a
zoning variance, which took quite a bit of time and money (as Pierre
mentioned).

The traditional gas station repair shop doesn't work for the classic
business. First, they're expensive because they have good visibility and
traffic, which doesn't do anything for me. And they offer no indoor
storage for cars, which is critical to do the work seriously.

One of the latest trends I see are these kids popping up on Fakebook that
somehow decided to buy an old 123 and maybe they put a hood stack on it, or
maybe not. Suddenly they somehow end up being the expert on Fakebook groups
then start a shop. These people think it’s easy to learn all about these cars
then turn that into opening a shop. It’s not easy.

2023-02-19 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Are you renting a commercial shop or doing it out of your home shop? The shop
here at the house is actually a commercial shop. In fact the PO ran a body shop
out of it. If I were to finish cleaning it up and organizing it, I could run a
business out of it. I’m about 45-1 hour north of Tulsa and am not really sure
if folks would make the drive to have their MB serviced. There are 1 or 2 shops
in Tulsa that supposedly specialize in MB but they appear to be rip offs to me.
When I say specialize I mean they work on them but not necessarily in the
business of restoring classic MBs to fully functioning. There is an old German
dude in Tulsa that was just him and a helper. Dude is still going but he has to
be well over 80 by now. He knew what he was doing.

It’s clearly become far more expensive to repair and worth far less as a result
of it now being a non-runner.

I’ll give you $500 for it. OK, in the interest of it being the holidays and
because I’m feeling generous, $1000.

Ok, so you mentioned that if you put some fuel down the intake it will run
for a few seconds, correct? If so, don't have enough fuel, not too much.
If this is the case for sure, then you need to turn up the mixture screw in
the fuel distributor housing with a long 4mm wrench. Keep track of how
much you turn it - start by turning it in 1/2 a turn and see what happens.
This might get you closer to an idle. If it dosen't help, put the screw
back to where it was - no need to add additional variables which will
cause issues in the future.

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] CIS

2022-12-17 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
The fuel pump definitely appears to be running anytime the key is the run
position. Maybe the relay is stuck on, or bypassed because it’s bad. Where is
it located?

I do have a pop tester so can test those if needed. The air plate appears to be
returning to the closed position with the engine off. With the key on and fuel
pump running, there is quite a bit of resistance pushing it down and when you
do, I can hear the injectors screaming. So perhaps earlier the plate was stuck
in the down position. That’s my guess.

I also have the big HF test kit that will supposedly do CIS. I need to read up
on the procedure.

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] CIS

2022-12-17 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
The pump should only run 1-2 seconds when the key is turned on then stop.
If its continuing to run, there is an issue with the relay or elsewhere in
the electrical system. And, injectors should not spray when the engine is
off - perhaps the fuel distributor is stuck. With the engine running, they
do spray constantly (whats what the C is for). The flow is controlled by
the position of the air flow metering plate. What position is the plate
in? It should be roughly even with the narrowest part of the bore it sits
in. If press down with the fuel pump on there should be some
significant resistance and it should return up immediately. With the pump
running you should hear the injectors scream as they inject fuel.

Some versions have a position switch in the distributor housing that
triggers the pump when the metering plate moves down, although I can't
remember which ones. A seized fuel distributor control piston would cause
the symptoms you describe in this case. Especially if you pushed it down
and it didn't return.

You do need a pressure gauge or you're really shooting into the dark. The
factory manual has good coverage of how to test and measure CIS.

The likelihood that the fuel distributor and WUR are working properly after
sitting a long time is nil. Any car I have that sat gets them rebuilt
before even attempting to start it. It prevents a lot of issues.

Do you have a diesel pop tester? You can use it for CIS injectors also,
but the pressure way lower. Replace the gauge with 0-200 psi. You can use
it to diagnose leaking or stuck injectors. Or, just replace them all.
Again, its likely needed.

If the injectors are flooding the cylinders with the key on, you have
multiple issues to resolve before proceeding.

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] USPS

2021-12-13 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
When we moved to FL in 1996 our mail carrier was a good ‘old cracker woman
(“cracker” being a term applied to native Floridian pioneer settlers) who had
done the route for decades. “Miss Donna” knew my kids, me, and all the
neighbors. She always had time to stop and chat a little on her route, was
always prompt, and kept things straight.

Fast forward to 2010, when we returned to Florida and the same neighborhood
from two years in IN. Sure enough, Miss Donna came to the door the first week
we returned and rekindled our friendship. I could do things like leave a note
in the mailbox for her to come to the door and ring the bell because I had a
Priority Mail box I needed to send out that day. That was the kind of carrier
she was. She ultimately retired on disability, I believe, because she had a bad
knee. The last week she did her route she had those USPS white tubs in her
truck filled with gifts from all the neighbors.

I moved a couple blocks away a few years ago and at this house we’ve got the
same setup with a carrier. “Miss Ginny” is a cracker lady who has been doing
the mail in this area for decades as well. Super nice, always pleasant, never
screws up. Comes to the door for my Priority Mail packages as well. She’s up in
years, so I’m not sure how munch longer we’ll have her, but she’s great.
There’s a young man of color who also does the route on Miss Ginny’s days off,
who does a good job and is pretty talkative, but he’s not Miss Ginny.

We’ve got a really good postmaster at our post office, too. I can’t recall the
details, but I had some sort of shenanigans going on with the USPS a few years
back that I had to escalate up to him, and he did a really good job sorting
things out and communicating.

We have a little rural post office a few miles away in Turkey Creek. It’s one
of those places where it’s two rooms, a lobby with PO boxes and another with
the sorting and counter. The person at the counter is the postmaster. I’ll
often go over there if I have to ship something during the holidays so I don’t
have to go to our big local PO that’s always crazy this time of year. The rural
PO you just walk into, do your business and leave.

One summer in college a buddy told me that the mail was hiring summer help to
cover vacations and whatever other humannel shortages. So 3 or 4 of us went
down to take the test. I ended up getting another job but one guy got the gig.
Keep in mind we were fairly intelligent and had done well in our studies. Oh,
and we were all 18 or so.

After a few days to get the hang of it, he figured out a better way to do the
route and got it done by noon or earlier. I think he had to be there at 8, sort
his stuff then hit the street. The other mailmen took all day, would finish by
4 or 5. So my buddy would go home, hang out, meet others of us for lunch, do
whatever ( he did not have a gf so that was not a feature of his schedule),
then go back to the facility 4ish, sort some mail, and close out. We were all
quite jealous.

At some point his supervisor got wind of his deal and called him in for a chat.
He explained that letting anyone else know about this would cause problems with
staff and his higher ups etc etc. So basically WTF you doing college boy?

my buddy said but wait, I could help you get this whole operation running
better, get more done, fewer people, save money, whatever. (Remember he was 18
and knew everything at that point in life). The supervisor then had to explain
to my dumbass buddy that the whole point of the operation was to hire people,
spend money, buy more trucks, bigger facilities, more machines, people move up
the ladder, more pay, more staff to manage, all that.

He advised my buddy to keep doing what he was doing and STFU about it around
the office so as not to upset the delicate balance of built-in inefficiency and
bureaucratic budget growth. Oh, and upset his less-perspicacious colleagues
who also yearned to f off half the day but were not sufficiently analytical or
insightful to figure out the scheme.

This was a significant educational experience for my buddy as he learned the
way of the gummint bureaucracy. And he got paid well for it and got to
basically screw off half the summer.

He was not asked to return the following summer.

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] USPS

2021-12-12 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
My postal carrier was apparently not informed of the "can't screw up"
requirement, as I'm constantly getting my neighbors' mail, and can only
speculate about how much of my mail is delivered elsewhere.

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] USPS

2021-12-12 Thread Clay via Mercedes
In the early 80’s I stood the test to be a carrier. At the time pay would have
been great ($10.hr) and the test simple. My fellows in the room were a motley
crew of ESL and high school grads, along with a few veterans. I opted to
continue higher education over putting in marathon strolls in rain. At the
time the postmaster at the local had high volume and competent crew. By the
time I returned to the zip code a few years later it was bedlam and equal
opportunity hires behind the counter. My carrier was one of the guys I took
the test with, who became the postmaster around 2012. Went from a nice guy to
a power hungry jerk who yelled at me when I had issues with the replacement
carriers who no longer spoke english or knew how to deliver or pick up mail.

The job is not an easy one. There was a neighbor a few blocks over who
transitioned from working the state liquor store to carrier when the citizens
voted to disband the bottle shoppes. He dropped 60 pounds and worked himself
to the bones. Finally got a decent route after five years of busting his
backend. Last I talked to him he was not the happy fellow I had known.
Stressed out, hitting the bottle and pretty much screaming about Amazon having
screwed over USPS because he had to get their junk delivered even if it meant
he had to skip the people at end of his route and hope to get their mail
delivered in the next day or three.

GWN seems to run a dedicated Amazon route for boxes, while the carrier has to
handle anything that fits in the mailbox. I have not met the carrier, but the
way he plays at Mario Andretti, I doubt I will.

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] USPS

2021-12-12 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
When I lived in Houston I’d be working in my garage shop and the mail guy would
come by. I’d see him often so we would chat a minute. Nice guy, gay Hispanic
which was kinda unusual as that was not particularly culturally common.

One day I see him coming and call out hello, he’s got this frown on his face
and he kinda shakes his head, and sorta tops it back over his shoulder. I see
this woman back behind him following, clipboard in hand. WTF. So he gives me
the mail and continues on.

This goes on for like 3 days. Then I see him alone a couple days later and I
ask him WTF that was all about. He says it was some evaluation thing and he was
worried about it. Ok.

A week later he is gone and replaced by a succession of incompetents, random
people. Amazing.

Some months go by and one day here he comes again. He was happy to see me and I
him, he stopped and we chatted a bit. He tells me that he got some bad
evaluation, none of it made any sense, so they shipped him off to a bunch of
random routes like these people on my route, none of them have time to learn
anything about the route and the residents on it so they do a $h*t job as one
would expect. He said he was there on such a rotation. He was around for 3-4
weeks then I never saw him again and service was crap from then on out.

I guess I knew at that point the USPS was doomed. Or it just reinforced that
opinion.

That stretch sounds right. If the pointer was close to TDC when you had
the drill bit shoved into the hole, that's not your problem and you need to
pull and adjust the IP.

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] 606 ip timing

2021-08-14 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I just pulled the valve cover. Apparently there is a special tool you use to
stick in a hole at tdc. I did not have that so I just used a drill bit of a
size that fits in the hole. It’s not exact but should be close enough and shows
maybe 1-2 degrees of stretch at 207k miles. Looks good to me. I guess next I
need to just pull the pump and put it back like it should be. Will need to
order new gaskets first and really need to try to get that broken off bolt out
of the adjuster and get that fixed properly. What turned into a planned hour
long job will take the car down until next weekend. That would seem to indicate
the pointer is in the right spot, unless it’s off as is the chain stretch

Good idea, and good to know that diesel fuel won't run down into the

All that tells me that the pump was pulled and put back wrong. You need a

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] 606 ip timing

2021-08-14 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
On the peach parts forum, one guy said that he would find TDC (and be able
to reset the pointer) by filling that cylinder with motor oil through the
injector hole. Take that injector apart, remove the nozzle and holder and
all the guts and use the body of the injector to plug the hole, then shove
a clear tube over the end of the injector so it stuck up above the valve
cover a good bit. Fill up the injector and the tube so you can see the oil
move up and down as the piston moves, and then you can move the crank back
and forth to find the high point for the oil. Stop there, set your pointer.

Next, drain / suck out all the oil, probably end up with a real mess down
the exhaust manifold so you may have to figure a way to drain that oil so
it doesn't kill the catalytic converter. Replace the injector guts and put
that back in place.

So if the pointer got moved, but the pump didn't ever get moved, then most
likely the chain is now stretched and the pump is late. So if you just

I see you’re thinking ahead for the MGB. You‘ll get a better price selling

The ride with the taxi springs is more firm.  It also better handles
loads in the seats and trunk.  The RR also give more ground clearance.
I suspect they are similar to the rate of normal springs, but have more
travel.   In other words, RR and taxi are similar, but taxi is stiffer.
Both probably are similar travel.

A guy in the Vintage forum on BW said he had a W111 from Ecuador that shipped

I’ve already replaced one trailing arm bushing, and that was relatively easy as

You can still used the klann spring compressor on the front end... put the
lower plate under the control arm and the upper plate as high up as
possible on the spring. Makes things much less frightening!

If you don't want to mark up the lower control arm (which is an issue after
powder coating), just put some cardboard between the plate and the arm.

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] Finnie Fun!

2018-12-31 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Its not always very clear... the original springs have multiple colors on
them that don't always correspond to what the manual/TDM says. Last time I
ordered replacement springs for a W108 (rear), they came with two red
marks, which made selecting the pads easy at that point.

I recommend ordering the springs, see what comes, then get the pads after
that.

BTW, the front end goes much easier with a spring compressor, but can be
done without.  without, I'd unbolt the 2 bolts on the inside of the LCA
that hold the bar to the subframe, then lower the LCA with a floor jack.

I can get it down to a certain point, then the manual says you need the paint
mark color on the spring for the final determination. I was hoping to be able
to get everything at once and not have to order springs, get them, then order
spring pads.

yes, that is  how the book does it.  are you saying there are no paint
marks left or are you saying you have not looked at them?  The paint
marks have been very durable but it is now 53 years since they were put on.

it all depends on the ride height you want.  When I did the springs on
111s, I went with the taxi version, but that IS higher than stock.  from
what little I remember, I think I used 12-15mm thick.  Stock is in the
8-12mm range top and bottom.  One thing you could do is order 3 pairs
for one end of the car, say 8, 10 and 12 for the front.  Use the 2 pairs
you determine most likely to be exact replacement, and finish that end.
Repeat for the other end.

Otherwise take one corner apart, and look over the parts.  The springs
will be sprung, but you should be able to find evidence of the paint
marks.  On the rubber seats, the markings are hidden until you take them
out.  Without spring pressure, the pretty much fall out.  So if you do
one front and one rear, you should have the info you need.  Leave it on
jack stands until the parts come in or put it back together.  it does
not take that long to drop out a spring, look at it, then put it back
together, but I'd just leave it apart until the parts come in.   The
rear is particularly easy to drop out a spring as long as you have a
floor jack.

I put air bags in the rear springs of my 200D in the yard of a nuns
house in KY in December, on grass without a floor jack.  It is that easy
to drop out the rear springs and put them back.

I can hardly wait for the part where you refinish all the wood. That is a

I put donuts inside my bearing.  Not Krispy, they have too much chemical
and too little donut, but independent shops are usually good and dunkin
is ok.

It is in the chassis manual.  DO you have it.  There are lots of choices
