The diesel Vanagons reportedly do OK as urban cargo vans (parcel delivery, etc) the gearing and low end torque plus moderate speed limits are suitable for that. For a van they are also really manuverable, they have a surprisingly tight turning radius which is good for small european side streets. What kills the diesels in the Vanagon are when people hold them at or above red-line trying to keep up with traffic on the highway. I had a 1959 barn door panel van with the original 36 hp engine. Probably the only vehicle I ever owned that a 240D could outrun. That being said, it was geared in a way that allowed it to do quite well off-road, along with the high ground clearance. And the only thing it *could* pass was a gas station... Yeah, it's called "excise tax." Along with county "wheel tax," etc., etc. Amazingly, it's less than it used to be, at least the way I recall it. There are (legal) ways around this, too. I just bought my son's car last month and only paid $41.00 to put it on the road (not including the 7% sales tax.) That's title and registration. In September it gets titled in Florida for less than that. Allan Streib wrote: In Indiana, to transfer title you pay sales tax based on the bill of sale or stated sale price. You also pay a yearly tax based on the value of the vehicle (determined by vehicle model and age, not sale price) which is part of the yearly registration renewal. Same here in Michigan. Our vehicle property tax goes down for three years and then stays there, with a 3 year old car paying half of new, and a 24 year old car also paying half of new. At 25 years, you've got a pretty good incentive to license and insure it as a historic vehicle. If I were to license my 16v normally, the annual license fee would be more than the sales tax from when I bought it. So every year I license my 1977 Saab for $32, and then pay $8 to transfer the plate to the 2.3-16. Saves me about $95 that way, and the state has to give me a new plate every year. I don't make the rules, I just play by them. Yes, that's right. I used to cruise my 79 240D slush at 80-85 on I 95 all the time-I always said it was a good mid lane car-the OM 602 turbo is fast lane car.
