Re: [MBZ] got my 87 300TD!

2005-09-28 Thread Kevin J. Slater
I had almost the same symtoms. I have records from the previous owner but
it doesn't show when the trap was replaced. I had a bad temp sensor in car
(plus other issues) and managed to overheat the engine on the way home one
time. That was enough to start the process of coolant loss. I was only
using the 300TD to go back and forth to the bus stop so I lived with it
for a while, but the clouds of white smoke in the cool mornings were
really getting outrageous and so I went out and found a #17 head. I think
I paid $850 + shipping from TN to PA. And that was my cheapest find and it
took a while to locate. I'd pay attention to what Dave's saying. He may be
overly cautious on this one, but you don't want to have to find a head,
take it from me.

...Kevin
87 300TD 277k miles

Dave M. said:
My 617 also likes to keep some pressure in the system when cold, but
it's not the 15-20psi that I observed with the 603 cracked heads. I
wouldn't worry about it on a 61x engine, or even 601/602, unless there
are other symptoms. On a 603 however I'd be monitoring the situation
 very closely.

Some of you may remember Justin Dobbs from a previous MB email list,
who had the perssure syndrome and ignored it, as most people do. About
a year later it started using coolant and then hydrolocked. I think he
ended up getting a used engine to swap in, something about damage to
the block surface (I forget though.) I think I heard of nearly a dozen
failed heads in the past 18 months or so, from the email list and
 various MB web forums.

FWIW, a brand new head is about $1600 (wholesale) from Rusty... less
than half that for a good used #17 head.

My '84 OM617 also maintains pressure in the cooling system for long
periods, and it hasn't shown any signs of overheating or coolant loss
to date. Until I observe some other signs of cooling system
anomalies, I'll continue to happily drive both engine types like I
 stole em.

Re: [MBZ] got my 87 300TD!

2005-09-27 Thread OK Don
From my archive --

Head model on 603 diesel engines:

For the head question, look at the casting number near #2/#3 cylinder.
Should be 603-016-xx-20 or something like that. If xx is 14, it's the old
bad head. If 17, it's the newer head from a 3.5L. And if it's 22, it's a
REALLY new head.

Thanks, Wray, for saving me the trouble! ;) To clarify my previous post, if
the head is number 17 or higher, it is the good, reinforced head. A number
15 or lower is the old, weak head.

I have heard of 5 variations... 14 (1987 version), 15 (?), 17 (3.5L, 1990 to
1995), 20 (newer than 1995-ish), and 22 (last revision, AFAIK). I forget if
number 15 exists or if it's a figment of my imagination, but the other 4 are
real. The head I bought from Rusty in spring 2002 was a #22.

- -dm :)

Also - verify that the serpetine belt tensioning pulley is in line
with the other pulleys. If not, repair before it pulls out of the
front case. I don't remember the mileage, but the vacuum pump was
improved because the original one could come apart and drop little
parts into the engine. I don't remember the specifics of that though

Hey Chris...don't listen too much to the #14 head stories, its
exagerated...My #14 head has gone to the overheating point a few times, for
for what I was told was a bad thermostat. Ironically I was told in this
forum by almost everyone that the reason i was overheating was because of my
#14 head! Let me tell you that I don't treat my car nice...I make at least 3
trips to Vegas during the summer and I go as fast traffic permits with full
blown AC...getting me really high up on the temp guage...my head and engine
don't have any problems.
P.S. a better bit of advise: oil those sun roof rails if your sunroof is
working.

The two usual S124 warnings apply: fixing the AC will likely be
expensive, and if you have a #14 head on that engine, you would do well
to make sure your cooling system is up to snuff and that the engine
doesn't clear 100 degrees C appreciably for risk of cracking the weak
 casted head.

Cool find, hope it gives you years of good service.

1) For more info, click this link... better to save as a text file,
then turn on word wrap. (I need to fix that - d'oh.)
http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/articles/124.1x3_buying_tips.txt

2) If the A/C has any pressure in the system, a recharge may cure it.
DO NOT convert to R-134a if it's still a virgin R-12 system. Use a
mineral-oil compatible alternative if you don't want to use R-12.
(I'd recommend R-12 hands down but that's another discussion.) If the
system is opened for any reason, replace the old green pressure switch
with the new red style, and consider a new hi/lo pressure safety
switch as well (mine failed on the 300E).

You don't want a gutted trap - you want Mercedes to
remove the trap and put on a new exhaust system FREE!

1. Is a gutted trap bad, in the sense of doing harm?
2. How does one go about getting a free exhaust from
the stealership on an 18 year old car?

Thanks!

Hi Chris,

1) Go to the dealer and get it replaced with the straight pipe. You
get a free new exhaust too. They probably won't notice, or care, that
the trap was modified.

2) My text file has the information on the high pressure syndrome...
it's high pressure in the cooling system after the engine has cooled
down (say, overnight). That's not normal. It should have very low
pressure or even a slight vacuum after cooldown.

I have a 190D 2.5 that displays excess pressure in the cooling system

Doesn't have any other symptoms. I also had a 190D 2.2 that sometimes
displayed the same symptoms for 10 years, but not regularly.

Pressure in the cooling system MIGHT mean a cracked head (and I'd
suggest investigating), but that is NOT conclusive. It may mean nothing
but a defective cap - or some other anomaly.

As to the number of cracked heads - no way there are more than about 1
in 5 (20%).

Many of the people that sell their 124.133 and 124.193s sell them
because they have the symptoms of head cracks, but many/most of the
people that have 124.133 and 124.193 without cracked heads tend to NOT
want to sell them. These are VERY desirable cars and there are very few
of them in the US (fewer than 6000 124 sedans and wagons with OM603.960
engines were ever brought to the US)! If 20% had cracked heads that
would be about 1200 124s with cracked heads. Then there were the almost
13,000 1986 '87 300SDLs. If 5% of the '86s and 20% of the '87s failed,
that would add about 2000 more cracked heads and still fewer than 20% of
the 14 series heads would have cracked!

MOST 603.96 engine heads will not crack and fail unless abused. Most ALL
of the OM60x heads (even 17 series and later) WILL show some signs of
cracking when they are removed after years of service, but MOST of the
cracks are superficial and will seldom result in catastrophic failure.
This is common to almost ALL of the 1st (and many 2nd) generation
aluminum diesel heads. The trick is sort out and separate the fatal and
inconsequential cracks - and that is VERY difficult to do. Even Mercedes
points out that the pressure testing procedure in the engine manual is
NOT 100% reliable and occasionally a head that passes the pressure test
will fail when put back into service.

Re: [MBZ] got my 87 300TD!

2005-09-27 Thread Dave M.
I agree - the pressure symptom is NOT conclusive that the head is
cracked. But IMO it creates a strong possibility. Marshall's two
190D's are about the only ones I know of that had this with no
apparent ill effects, but remember neither of them were OM603's.

I know that my car would usually have slight vacuum in the system
after a cold-soak. When the head cracked I had high pressure
(15-20psi). After I replaced the cracked head, it went back to slight
vacuum.

The excess pressure can also cause other problems... my one car's
water pump would be leak-free when hot, but after a cold-soak the cold
pressure caused it to leak. (I'm still using that pump with the new
head, leak-free.) In another instance (different 87 300D) the radiator
would leak due to the cold pressure, but didn't leak when hot. YMMV,
but I stand by my belief that HIGH pressure when cold is not normal
(remember, I'm talking 15-20psi here, not 3psi.)

I also have no plans to sell my 1987 300D and actually wouldn't mind
getting another one, regardless of what head it currently has.

=)

In addition to the head problem(s):

Marshall Booth (on the subject of 300TD purchase): The OM60x engines
used in the W201/124/'86+ 126s are much quieter then the older OM61x
engine. Part of that IS the engine and part is the sound encapsulation
used in and under the engine compartment (be SURE the one you buy HAS
these panels - some misguided mechanics throw them away and they are
expensive to replace)! The hydraulic valve lifters CAN make quite a
racket if the car has had a steady diet of conventional oil. Changing to
synthetic oil WILL considerably reduce and eventually may even eliminate
all but an occasional clack/clatter from these noisemakers ;-) The '87
300TD is probably my favorite MB ever!

There are LOTS of little things to look at when buying a 13 year old
car. Ones that I would look for are: AC system - it must produce good
cooling (compressor replacement will usually be well over $1000), the
sunroof must work properly in all modes (sunroof repair can be $1000),
The tail gate must open, stay up and close flawlessly and the pull in
motor must engage and pull the gate shut without effort once contact is
made, check that the serpentine belt idler pulley (right below the
horizontal expanse of fan belt at the front to of the engine) MUST be
aligned parallel with the belt - if it's a degree or two cocked, then it
MUST be repaired (the costs could be from $100-$1000 depending on what
is actually worn or broken), the engine MUST start promptly when dead
cold and idle should smooth out within 20-30 seconds! There must be NO
evidence of transmission fluid on the grate at the bottom of the bell
housing (where the torque converter lives ;-) as that would be evidence
of leaking seals (minimum of $500 to fix) and the transmission should
shift very smoothly after the 1st few cold shifts. The power seats
should all move effortlessly and all the windows should work at about
the same speed. The cruise control should be tested! The radio, antenna
and cassette player SHOULD work (though a refurbished radio is available
on an exchange basis from Becker for about $130). Wipers (front and
rear) should work smoothly. Finally, the car should ride and handle
about as well as your 300SD - but just a bit more agile and it should
feel more powerful ('cause it is).

---

Let me add that the 124 is notorious for having the wires from the B
pillar to the rear doors break - seems that the wire was made from
stranded wire with too few strands of wire that was too thick to be
sufficiently flexible. The 201s and 126s made during the same period did
NOT suffer from this failure.

Re: [MBZ] got my 87 300TD!

2005-09-27 Thread Christopher McCann
Ugh - just talked to the seller and Rotkaeppchen has a
#14 head...as does his wife's 603 with 400,000 miles.
He says it's the trap, not the head...well, whatever.
The problem I can see is that he guttted the trap WHEN
HE GOT THE CAR 4 years ago (21,000 miles ago). That
means the trap was on for 120,000+ miles...I hope it's
not screwed up already.

He DID advise driving it nice and easy till it gets to
temp and nice and easy to give a little cool down
after it is hot b/c of the Aluminum head - is that
wise or overkill? I normally do that anyway with my
SD, except teh cool down part.

Thanks,

Christopher

My 617 also likes to keep some pressure in the

it's not the 15-20psi that I observed with the 603
 cracked heads. I
wouldn't worry about it on a 61x engine, or even
 601/602, unless there
are other symptoms. On a 603 however I'd be
 monitoring the situation
 very closely.

Some of you may remember Justin Dobbs from a
 previous MB email list,
who had the perssure syndrome and ignored it, as
 most people do. About
a year later it started using coolant and then
 hydrolocked. I think he
ended up getting a used engine to swap in, something
 about damage to
the block surface (I forget though.) I think I heard
 of nearly a dozen
failed heads in the past 18 months or so, from the
 email list and
 various MB web forums.

FWIW, a brand new head is about $1600 (wholesale)
 from Rusty... less
than half that for a good used #17 head.

My '84 OM617 also maintains pressure in the
 cooling system for long
periods, and it hasn't shown any signs of
 overheating or coolant loss
to date. Until I observe some other signs of
 cooling system
anomalies, I'll continue to happily drive both
 engine types like I
  stole em.

Re: [MBZ] got my 87 300TD!

2005-09-27 Thread Dave M.
Hi Chris,

I wouldn't sweat it. Make sure the coolant tank is clean and doesn't
show signs of oil in there. The #14 head could last a long time before
you need to replace it (if ever!).

It's generally wise not to use WOT until the engine reaches operating
temp, however you also should not let it idle more than 30 seconds or
so after startup. Just drive away gently after oil pressure
stabilizes. No cooldown is needed unless it's right after a period of
full load, like stopping at the top of a steep grade.

More importantly, watch the temp gauge when test driving... should be
in the 85-95C range and should not go over 100C unless it's *hot* out,
or you're doing a top-speed run. Temps over 110C almost always
indicate a cooling system problem that needs attention (which could be
a simple as dirt bugs in the condenser fins.)

[MBZ] got my 87 300TD!

2005-09-26 Thread Christopher McCann
Got a nice '87 300TD today for the wife. She was tired
of the mpg's on the Sienna, so we gave the man $100
earnest and he's holding it till the van sells. Should
not be too hard to unload it.

No rust (a little around the rear jack points), 145K
miles, red. I couldn't believe how fast it
accelerates. Incredibly smooth ride...excellent
handling. Wow. Trap has been gutted. Bought from a
farmer in IA (who drove it down to KC for me to look
at it cuz it rained and he couldn't combine today).
When I sell the van, he'll deliver it back on his
flatbed trailer. He has been overhauling MB diesel
engines for decades and used to do it for my local
indy (subcontractes). He never overhauled the TD.
Perfect interior except for the normal cracks in the
wood around the gear selector and the ashtray has come
out and I think might be missing some wood trim around
it. A/C does not work, not sure if it needs recharged
or if it's more serious - otherwise VERY nice. Will
post a pic on my picture blogger once I get it in my
possession and give it a good waxing.

I'm trying to think of a good name...suggestions
welcome.

Chris

The two usual S124 warnings apply: fixing the AC will likely be
expensive, and if you have a #14 head on that engine, you would do well
to make sure your cooling system is up to snuff and that the engine
doesn't clear 100 degrees C appreciably for risk of cracking the weak
casted head.

Cool find, hope it gives you years of good service.
