I can see that being an issue. Synth in a garage queen may not be cost effective. If you swap out oil every year even if you do not make the miles, I guess dino is just as good. Putting it every other place is a better deal. Not enough wear on the fluid in the trans or diff, so you can keep it there for the life of the part, or you hit the miles. Most people leave standard quality fluids in for far too long, might as well keep good stuff in there instead clay 1974 450sl - Frosch - Two tone green 1972 220D - Gump - She is green, simple and ran 1995 E300D - Cleo - Used by the Queen of Denial POS 1987 SDL - Beware Nigerian Scammers On Oct 25, 2012, at 4:23 PM, Curt Raymond wrote: I'm with Clay, I think this is the BEST time to change to synthetics... [MBZ] hot topic?
Ok, someone needs to start a good thread or we are going to be back into another oil thread or something similar. This may be considered almost as bad. I will pose a question that I know has been asked before but bear with me if possible and give me your opinions. I may want to drive my 76 300D from Winnipeg to Ottawa and back next spring - summer. That is about 1200 miles each way. The car is fairly good in my opinion. I have driven it from Winnipeg to the lake and back at least a couple of times this past spring and it did fine on the highway at speeds up to 75 mph or more. That is a trip of about 175 miles each way. In previous years I have driven it similar distances in different directions without any problems. There are some things I should do, like adjust the valves etc and I want to change coolant and AT fluid etc. I have new belts to install and it has a new battery this year. I also want to have a close look at the tires since i have no idea how old they are. They were on it when I got it in July 2005. They are Michelins and have lots of tread but they are aging I assume. So, the gist of all this is: What would you haul with in terms of spare parts etc.? I believe much is still available for these old cars without too much searching so if I do have an issue on the road, I assume it could be addressed reasonably quickly. We would go south into the USA and then east through to Duluth and then east again through Northern Michigan and cross into Southern Ontario at Sault St Marie most likely and then run east to Ottawa. Would be probably 3 days each way of about 400 miles per day. Sounds like you're going to need 5 new tires, the spare is probably VERY old. I carry new fuel filters, the tools to replace them and some nitrile gloves so I don't have to have smelly hands. Other than that I have a cell phone and know how to use it. This week I've been driving my '78 240D 110 miles a day while my '84 190D is down awaiting delivery valve seals. Take the car out for a couple 100 mile drives in the weeks before the big trip, change all the fluids (engine, AT, coolant, differential), adjust the valves, maybe do the front wheel bearings if its been a long time on those. Then drive and enjoy it. I think 123 rears are 5 or 6 I forget, 201 rears are 4 I just ordered some cheap Kenwood replacements for my 190D which has gotten all crackly. I'm not much of a stereophile so cheap works for me. I have been using Mobil 1 on all my cars for a decade. If you are going to swap out fluid and filter, then take the trip, I would do synth ATF with the full TC drain. Run it the 2k miles, which should loosen up and flush old gunk, then drain when you get home. Fill with synth ATF again. clay On Oct 25, 2012, at 11:59 AM, Randy Bennell wrote: On 25/10/2012 12:36 PM, Dieselhead wrote: So, the gist of all this is: What would you haul with in terms of spare parts etc.? Randy In addition to the obvious, check the flex disks and carrier bearing carefully. replace the flex disks if there is cracking or tears. Check/change Diff grease and trans fluid prior to the start. Carry an extra set of fuel filters, and possibly a fan belt. Check the alt brushes, or just replace the brush/regulator pack. Check the jack, spare, toolkit. IF you are not sure about brake pads, check them too. Drain and refill the brakes with DOT 4 fluid unless you have or want to change to DOT 5. BEWARE there is a new DOT5e or something like that that is out, and it is NOT DOT5 and it is NOT compatible with DOT5. ___ The flex disks are something I intend to have a look at. I want to do the transmission oil and filter change too so that will be a good opportunity to have a good look. The alternatior brushes would also be a good thing to check. Good thinking. I have changed the brake fluid out once a couple of years ago. Wouldn't hurt to do so again I guess. SO - NEW QUESTION What sort of AT fluid do you recommend for these old cars? I believe the original was essentially the GM stuff. I don't suppose that it would hurt to use synthetic ATF. My truck uses the (sorry but cannot recall the designation) synthetic stuff recommended by Ford for the new transmissions. I assume the same stuff would work. I believe that DOT 5.1 is compatible with 3 and 4, but meets the temperature specs of 5. Ok, my hot topic kept you folks posting all day today and I got some good information to boot. It should be changed every year, but every two years works OK for me. Little used cars in varying climate probably need it more often than daily drivers. I'm with Clay, I think this is the BEST time to change to synthetics... That said I probably wouldn't bother for engine oil. Randy doesn't drive the car that much and doesn't drive it during the winter so he's not likely to get any of the real advantages synthetic would provide. -Curt Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2012 16:49:10 -0400 From: Michael Canfield slozuk...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] hot topic? I carry spare fuel filters, a screwdriver, a crescent wrench, lug wrench, spare tire, fuses and jumper cables in the 83. If going on a long trip I carry a jug of oil and atf along with a jug of drinking water for me or the car. I wouldn't change types of lubricants just before a long trip like yours. I think you are asking for potential trouble with leaks as the syn oil does it's job and cleans out the gunk. Just my $.02. The W115 chassis has a single 5x7 front speaker mounted in the center of the grill - I remember this because that's where I did the last RR of the heater fan in my last '76 300D. I'd add check the half shaft CV boots - make sure they are not open. On Thu, Oct 25, 2012 at 3:18 PM, clay monroe redgh...@comcast.net wrote: I may be able to source some speakers from PnP. These were in the back, the fronts looked pretty hard to deal with. You will also need to run new wires or use the existing and bypass the fade wheel, to get the 4-way stereo/fade on the newer units. Nothing too exotic, just a bit time consuming. --R On 10/25/12 12:22 PM, Randy Bennell wrote: Well there is one thing I should do. There is no radio in it at the moment. The one that was in it when I got it was an aftermarket junker that did not work so I pulled it out. The kids gave me a Pioneer unit for father's day and I have never installed it. Partly because I assume it will need better speakers and I have not gone looking for sizes that will fit in original spots. So, in order to plug in the ipod I need to install the stereo.
