Re: [MBZ] Jaime mentioned on BAT 300TD auction

2018-10-12 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Yes the ac can be cold but it is nice that it blows from the center. I
always thought that required dash removal, but should research as it is
about the only thing not working on mine.

The ac hoses are available new for about 100 for the long one, so putting a
used one on is sort of weird.

I was referring more to the dash cracks. I think at 20k you are in
nitpicking territory. And yes that seat looks terrible.

I am considering all leather interior and new carpet. At that point someone
will have to give me 30k to buy it. But why sell? After you fix all the
stuff, it is time to enjoy it. Kind of fun to drive something that just
gets better and better as the years go by.

Invoice says Andrew Villasenor on it.
It says he restored the car, with among other things a rebuilt head.
No mention of whether the head came from Classic Center, or whether he rebuilt
a head himself, or sent a head to a machine shop for rebuilding...
But I'd be annoyed if I paid somebody $9k to bring my car up to snuff and a
year later it started spitting out rocker arms.

The climate control actually worked well in this car, I think all the pods
were done. AC was some of the coldest I’ve seen in a 123.

The botched valve job assembly definitely concerned me, but not anyone on
BaT it seems. The owner was really lucky when that retaining spring popped
off the rocker shaft. It could have gotten ugly.

I didn’t like the painted needles (Why?!?) or the poorly rebuilt seat. All
sloppy work.

Well it has had some stuff done to it.

I think it should have had new rear subframe bushings minimum. They make
the car swim down the road at highway speed if not replaced at those miles.
It should also have had a new transmission for those dollars. And they
didnt say who rebuilt the head.

I guess it just goes to show the cars hold a little bit of value now when
you keep them up rather than running them into the ground. Good to know.

I think it is time to switch to agreed value on the auto policy! No more of
this lowballing crap from usaa. They would total this car out at about 4k.

[MBZ] Jaime mentioned on BAT 300TD auction

2018-10-11 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
"An engine issue in July 2018 prompted the seller to take the car to *Jaime
Kopchinki’s *shop in Morristown, New Jersey for an inspection as shown on
an included receipt. It was discovered that the rocker shaft for cylinder
#1 was bent, the front rocker arm was broken, and the second rocker arm was
displaced. A locating pin on the first rocker shaft bracket was never
installed during the 2016 work. The valve train was inspected and
reassembled with a new rocker shaft, rocker arm, and retaining springs.
Valve clearances were adjusted and a compression test reportedly found 29,
25, 28, 26, and 27 bar on cylinders 1-5 respectively. New injector heat
shields and return hoses were also installed, the throttle linkage was
lubricated, and the oil/filter was changed."

Hi Craig,
Thank you!

No, looks like the author is driving, I'm in the passenger seat in the
photos.

The color is 221 "dark green". It seems to have no longer been used after
1959 or so. I had a really difficult time finding someone who could look
it up and mix some:
http://images.jaimekop.com/2015_05_15_Mercedes_219/large-68.html

When I found the car, it had original tires on it still. So I preserved
them and found a used set of 5 wheels, had them blasted and painted to the
correct color, then mounted new tires on them.

I just wondered if you knew which dealer it might be, since it was in New

Re: [MBZ] Jaime, are these guys anybody you know?

2016-07-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Au contraire a bad dealership is a direct reflection on Mercedes-Benz. They may
not want it to be but it is.
An example is how nobody in the TDI community will take their car to a VW
dealer for service. Its become abundantly clear in the community that taking
your car to VW for service = Broken car. The number of stories of VW dealers
putting timing belt tensioners in backwards is staggering. So sadly a
dealership with competent techs is painted with a broad brush...

I recently was an employee for a Mercedes Benz Dealership in South Jersey. I
worked for the body shop and it was as if working for a no name chop shop body
shop. They do not care for their customers, all they want is the insurance
money. The best part is that the body shop manager is hooked on oxycontin and
all other types of narcotic pain medications, so he steals from customer
vehicles and from the body shop itself and blames the employees. So what i did
to cover the rest of the employees is record the manager stealing/ selling what
does not belong to him. I take this information to the general service manager
and explain to him what is going on and 3 days later i was layed off. All
managers in that dealership are a team, they look out for each other. One
employee who has been there for 27 years knows this has been going on for years
and told me not to say anything or it would come back and bite me in the rear,
IT DID. I would strongly recommend taking the vehicle to Princeton Mercedes or
other body shops. This body shop which is not far from Philadelphia is doing
everything completely wrong and dishonest. MANAGEMENT not its current employees!!!

Ah. They grounded one side of the speaker line - huh?
*shakes head* Not a good idea. Oh well. It is what it is.

You might be able to test your 1492 with a meter. Measure
the resistance between the various speaker "-" terminal.
Also measure from the "-" terminal to chassis ground.
Probably should check both polarities.

Compare that to the same test procedure done with the "+"
terminals. If the amp output is NOT ground referenced, the

Bad idea. If the amplifier sections are designed
appropriately, it's possible to combine them - but you either
get double the current or double the voltage and without
changing the speaker impedance you likely won't get much more
power.

And most likely, the amplifier sections are NOT designed that
way. In which case the amp outputs "fight" each other and
all the power goes into destroying the amp rather than out
the speakers.

2015-06-19 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Hi Meade,
You can easily bypass the fader switch... In earlier cars (which I'm
familiar with) the fader switch wiring harness has connections to the rear
speakers in the center console. If you work with the wire, you can stretch
them up to the radio. No need to run new wires to the rear. I run new
wiring to the fronts, since the factory wiring is part of the factory fader
harness. Normally I do this with out cutting anything (I have lots of the
male factory speaker connectors, and access to the original crimp tool for
them) so I can return the car to original.

The original style speaker connectors are labeled + and - if you look very
carefully at the plastic pieces.

Good luck!

Actually now that you mention it I think it was the '78 240D I ran new wires
on, on the '84 I think I spliced into the wires that were already there leaving
it so it'd be easy to reconfigure to factory if somebody wanted to.

The issue is that the fader gets two-channel input (only two wires), and
outputs four-channels (only four wires). The _ground_ or _negative_ signal
to the speakers doesn't go through the fader, it goes from the radio
through connector X48H and X48G, which are not listed in the FSM index of

console. So I would need to run two more wires to that fader socket for

If I keep the fader switch, do I only feed it the front speaker signals

[MBZ] Jaime I need help! '87 wagon radio replacement

2015-06-18 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Jaime,

The aftermarket Sony radio in my '87 wagon finally died, and whomever
installed it really hacked up the factory wiring. Some of the original
connectors appear to be there, I found two. Looks like the factory radio
should have been a Becker Grand Prix, model 754.

I've got a spare Becker 1492, which I'd like to install. This afternoon I
went by a local pick-n-pull and from a W202 I cut the radio connectors and
about a foot of the factory wiring, so I have connectors that fit into the
back of the 1492 including the CD changer port.

Q1: What to do with the nearly-dead fader switch in the center console?
Should I bypass, or bite the bullet and get a new fader switch. If bypass,
have you got a wiring diagram? I have already tried a thorough cleaning
with De-Ox-It, which helped a little, but it is still pretty miserable.

Q2: The 1492 has a connection port for a CD changer, but I have no such
thing in the wagon. Have you a wiring diagram so I can make an aux input
connection?

Hi Ned,

Updated maps are released annually. My department does the final testing
on them.

And house numbers are certainly available... usually down to the precision
of one block. What isn't available is an interpolation to position the
destination exactly on that block (which is often inaccurate in other
systems for a variety of reasons). But if you have a street several miles
long, you should be able to choose from a range of house numbers in the
form of something like 1..99, 101..199, etc. This also depends on map
data: if you live in a rural area, you'll greatly benefit from a new disc
as detailed coverage has improved significantly.

I have the original window sticker from my recently acquired 2006 E320 CDI.

It shows a Comand system including harmon/kardon Logic7 surround sound with
a 6 CD changer and DVD navigation. The Command system along with a glass
sun -roof, powered rear window shade, and heated front seats cost the PO
$2950. It also has a $500 Sirius Satellite, which I’ve never activated.

The sound system is awesome. It puts out something like 430 watts to more
speakers than I can find. And the tuner gets great reception in spite of
the antenna being embedded in the back window.

But the navigation system is lame. My circa 2008 Garmin Nuvi runs rings
around it. This Comand unit can only navigate to a street or road. There
seems to be no way to key in a house number. Makes it worse than useless
in communities where there are multiple roads with the same name but each
has different ranges of house numbers. I think the navigation system can
be updated by inserting a new DVD in the trunk-mounted unit. But I have
never seen an update newer than 2008. And that update costs about 2X or
3X the price of a new Garmin.

It’s reassuring to hear the Comand is robust. If it goes bad many readouts
on the dash would quit working. Even the analog clock in the dash is
controlled by the navigation system.

Of course I'd prefer to stick with my phone which is more or less always up

the car comes with nav and it takes up a lot of prominent real estate on

When we went to Michigan last month I bought a new navigation system at our
local sporting goods store. Its put out by National Geographic and has
pressed wood fibers between two plastic layers. I like the plastic layers
for protecting the wood fibers. Its large but thin, kind of like a serving
tray and fits nicely between the seat and the center console. It covers all
of North America which makes for fun browsing as you drive.

We did use my phone momentarily in Niagara Falls on the return trip, I
wasn't sure where the hotel was as it was a different hotel than the
outbound ride but the rest of the trip was all with a paper map...

reliable and stable. And, a huge advantage: Becker Autosound can service

logic7 sound system is outstanding as well.

Updated maps are still available for the Navi and it works well.

Get the phone system and you can get a BT cradle that works with modern
phones.

Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a car with one.

Re: [MBZ] Jaime! A Poor Widow Needs Help!

2014-07-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
When we went to Michigan last month I bought a new navigation system at our
local sporting goods store. Its put out by National Geographic and has pressed
wood fibers between two plastic layers. I like the plastic layers for
protecting the wood fibers. Its large but thin, kind of like a serving tray and
fits nicely between the seat and the center console. It covers all of North
America which makes for fun browsing as you drive.

We did use my phone momentarily in Niagara Falls on the return trip, I wasn't
sure where the hotel was as it was a different hotel than the outbound ride but
the rest of the trip was all with a paper map...

Hi Tom,

The COMAND system in that car was a bit outdated even in 2007, but is still
reliable and stable. And, a huge advantage: Becker Autosound can service
and repair the components at a reasonable price. I think the high end
logic7 sound system is outstanding as well.

Updated maps are still available for the Navi and it works well.

Get the phone system and you can get a BT cradle that works with modern

Any W126 is a good car. The 560's are gas hogs, but otherwise very
very nice. Best one of the bunch is the SDL as far as I'm concerned

Sadly the 420 usually gets better gas milage along with more power,
the M103 in that car is a bit breathless. No better than my TE, at
any rate -- 19 mpg on the highway, probably a bit better when I get
