On my '90 350SDL with aux fans that won't kick in and an erratic temp
 guage,
(goes from 85 to pegged @ 120+, and back again), a slight tap at the
top
 of
the dashboard above the gauge will cause it to jump, so we figured the

 guage
it intermittent. Even hit the block with a laser thermometer by the
 sensor
, engine is cooling as it should. IIRC, there are 2 separate sensors,
one
for the gauge, which we replaced, thinking the sensor was
intermittent.
 The
other goes to the ACC unit. Don't remember if the sensor or the relay
replacement caused the fans to start working again, but I know we did
not
 replace the ACC PBU. YMMV.

Got 4 cans of R-12 left. Only enough for 1 re-charge after I find
where
 my
 leak is. ;-(

Again, it's only the aux fans that don't work automatically; compressor
works fine, and fans will run when straight wired or aux fan relays are
jumpered; no power at high press switch by dryer.

You can pull the KLIMA relay and jump two terminals there to
determine if a faulty Klima is the problem.. I can't remember the
terminals, but if you have a wiring diagram, you should be able to
figger it out.

Power for the low pressure switch goes through the KLIMA from the
PBCU -- if you don't have power there, it's the PBCU. High pressure
switch for the fan probably does not, but I'm not sure on the 350
SDL -- if it's the W14o, it could be anything since it's got a
digital system rather than an analog one for ACC.

Well, seems that I have a leaking air cond. expansion valve in the
350SDL again; orig replaced 'bout 10 years ago.
Leak at exp valve detected with flame detector; system has dye now;
we'll check for more leaks again in few days.

Additionally, aux fans don't run, 'cept with 12V applied directly
to lead to motors.
Evidently fans should come on at ~300 psi (20bar); air cond tech
said pressure was ~350psi.

Fuses 1 and 5 are good and 12V pwr is sitting at downstream side of fuses.

Shorting across leads to pressure switch at dryer does nothing.

Leaking valve, or leaking o-rings? Should be 4 at that expansion valve.

While you've got the system open, replace as many o-rings as you can and

Yes, they are, but engine coolant temp sensor may also have some effect on
aux fan control system according to the wiring diagram here in my hand.
Even if it doesn't, engine temp gage has been very erratic for few days;
'gotta solve that, too, and again, according to diag. I'm looking at, it may
have some effect on fan control system. Look at page 128 (AUX FAN) of the
90/91 350SDL CD and help me understand the dashed line between the coolant
temp circuit and the aux fan circuit at the ACC control unit.

Aux fan relays checked good when power is applied directly (on bench), but
I have no power in either wire at high press sw at dryer. Fans run when
jumpered at K9 terminals and when power is applied directly to fan wires at
dryer. Fans do NOT run when high press and high temp terminals at dryer are
jumpered/shorted. There is NO POWER in any of the wires at the press/temp
switches.

BTW, yes, fuses F1 and F5 were the first thing I checked and changed, and I
have power sitting at relay terminals 30 and 85.

So, does the coolant temp sensor have some effect on aux fan operation via
the ACC control, or not?

'Seems I need coolant temp sensor, anyway, for the terribly erratic temp
gage; for example, gage sits pegged at bottom 'til engine is at op. temp;
then gage jumps to 85 and sometimes jumping to 110+, etc. Coincidence with
aux fan prob? I need clearer understanding of dashed lines between coolant
temp sensor circuit and aux fan circuit at ACC page 128.

Yes, sounds like you are on the right track, might as well replace that
sensor. Sounds like the ACC brain reads that sensor as well as everything
else.
Peter is probably onto something with the KLIMA relay suggestion.

Power for the low pressure switch goes through the KLIMA from the
PBCU -- if you don't have power there, it's the PBCU. High pressure
switch for the fan probably does not, but I'm not sure on the 350 SDL

Oh, the dashed lines indicate wires/in the same connector/plug.

Checking other wiring diagrams, I find that operation of aux fans seems to
be very much affected by engine coolant temp via the ACC control, especially
in AUTO; 'don't think I had it out of AUTO with the coolant temp up when I
was messing with it today; hafta try that tomorrow. AUTO, or not, may not

high enough to send power to aux fan relays via the temp switch.

From my experience with the ML - if the compresosr is on, the aux fans need
to be running, or the R12 pressure will get too high, and turn of the
compressor. I don't think the temp sensor is going to be your answer (for
the AC).
I'm betting on Peter - it's likely the KLIMA or PPU.

From my experience with the ML - if the compresosr is on, the aux fans
need

to be running, or the R12 pressure will get too high, and turn of the
compressor. I don't think the temp sensor is going to be your answer (for
the AC).
I'm betting on Peter - it's likely the KLIMA or PPU.

On my '90 350SDL with aux fans that won't kick in and an erratic temp guage,
(goes from 85 to pegged @ 120+, and back again), a slight tap at the top of
the dashboard above the gauge will cause it to jump, so we figured the guage
it intermittent. Even hit the block with a laser thermometer by the sensor
, engine is cooling as it should. IIRC, there are 2 separate sensors, one
for the gauge, which we replaced, thinking the sensor was intermittent. The
other goes to the ACC unit. Don't remember if the sensor or the relay
replacement caused the fans to start working again, but I know we did not
replace the ACC PBU. YMMV.

Got 4 cans of R-12 left. Only enough for 1 re-charge after I find where my
leak is. ;-(

Well, seems that I have a leaking air cond. expansion valve in the 350SDL
again; orig replaced 'bout 10 years ago.
Leak at exp valve detected with flame detector; system has dye now; we'll
check for more leaks again in few days.

Additionally, aux fans don't run, 'cept with 12V applied directly to lead
to motors.
Evidently fans should come on at ~300 psi (20bar); air cond tech said
pressure was ~350psi.

Fuses 1 and 5 are good and 12V pwr is sitting at downstream side of fuses.

Shorting across leads to pressure switch at dryer does nothing.

Where are relays K9 and K10 (aux. fan relays); evidently in fuse/relay box
at left rear corner of engine compartment, but which ones?

Ideas, tips?

TIA

BTW, 'placed order with Rusty few days ago for air filters and ant. fender
seal (rcvd today); had waited several days to place order, thinking I'd
notice/find the need to order something else; nothing else came up; even
said to Rusty, Now that I've called to order, something else will likely
come up in a day or two. Well, sho nuff.
