History is unknown, other than that the previous owner was a doctor in Germany who could no longer afford to restore the car due to socialized medicine (or so say the car's notes). Cruising down the interstate is probably a lot of work, if today's drive at 20mph is any indication - it is a lot of car to handle and the clutch, shifter, and steering require a great deal of force and care. It is a four-speed with a bizarre shift pattern (incorrect knob in the pics for some reason): R 2 |__| | | 1 3-4 No synchro on first. Third is direct and fourth is overdrive with no clutch required. Just move the lever and it will engage when revs match. If you wanted overhead cams, you had to buy a Duesenberg. The normally aspirated J made 265hp from 6.8L and the supercharged version, SJ, was good for 320hp. But it lacked the drama queen antics of the Mercedes. And the MB engine puts out 157hp, not 137 as I miswrote earlier. > Tom - what metal is the firewall made from? I have heard that the supercharger engagement was quite dramatic -- it was electrically switched just like the kickdown switch. 98 to 137 hp at the click of a switch had to be fun. My mechanic friend's stepfather aquired Rommel's staff car in the late 40's as a junker, but it ran long enough for the two of them to take it for a short run on the autobahn, sitting on milk crates. He said he fell over backwards when the supercharger cut in, but the engine tossed a main bearing so they never drove it again. Big beast of a car, though.
