It’s easy to make a case on a non-operable car. Just start going down the list
of all the things you *can’t* check out and it gets ugly real quick. If the
person is unwilling to accept this, make your best offer, walk away, and know
that there will be others.

2020-04-28 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes

Yep, I have been watching that thread over there.

I’m working with a guy that was on PeachParts who is trying to sell his father
in law’s 1984 380SL. FIL no longer drives and they need some $$ towards his
care. FIL is convinced his 35+ year old car, the red headed stepchild of the
model line, with over 160k on the clock and numerous minor issues, is worth BIG
BUCKS. Why? Because a few years back he saw a Mecum or other high line auction
with a car “just like his” that went for big bucks.

FIL wants to list the car for $9k. Son in law says $6k, knowing it’s a $3k-$4k
car on a very good day. FIL has agreed to list at $6k after protracted begging
from son in law. I told the son in law to get FIL to agree to lower the price
$1000/month for every month it’s listed somewhere. That and keep track of every
offer, no matter how lousy it is, so he can compile a list of offers and show
FIL what the market says it’s worth.

This will be a long, drawn out, painful process, and we all know where it will
end. This is what happens when emotion comes into a transaction.

Not to sound pedantic, but sometimes people just don’t get it unless you lay it
out for them. It also validates your rationale for the price you offer, so they
don’t immediately go into “lowball” mode or think you’re trying to rip them
off. It also puts them in a position where you can suggest (nicely) that if
they took a little time to get it cleaned up and running you might be
interested at a higher price.

More than once I’ve done this and walked away, only to get a call back a few
days later with a decent counter or notification that the car has been cleaned
up and is now running.

It could be a BAT candidate if it was cleaned up and had a few things
done to it.  I figure a $4-5k real world value but on BAT, no telling
what would happen.  After all didn't you sell a 4 door there with no
working AC for crazy money?

I doubt it’s a BaT candidate based on what you described. If that’s the case

eldest’s 2005 with nearly 350k on it is still a very pleasant car to drive.
Much nicer than a CD.

and it was running and in good condition, $5k might not be an unrealistic
price. Mileage is a big hit no matter what.

Re: [MBZ] 85 300CD

2020-04-28 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I am sure I could have thrown a battery in it and I bet it would start
right up.  Knowing the guy (who is Jewish BTW which may factor in, sorry
if I offended any of our Jewish friends) I figure it probably runs
good.  I was make the offer as is trying to make it seem like it will
take a lot more to get it running that what I am betting it needs.  On
the other hand, it may have zero compression and not run at all, or
maybe the tank is full of algae.

Re: [MBZ] 85 300CD

2020-04-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Did you explain this to him?

Not to sound pedantic, but sometimes people just don’t get it unless you lay it
out for them. It also validates your rationale for the price you offer, so they
don’t immediately go into “lowball” mode or think you’re trying to rip them
off. It also puts them in a position where you can suggest (nicely) that if
they took a little time to get it cleaned up and running you might be
interested at a higher price.

More than once I’ve done this and walked away, only to get a call back a few
days later with a decent counter or notification that the car has been cleaned
up and is now running.

That is why I thought a $2k offer as it sits was more than fair. If he
wants to get full value for it, or even what he considers full value, he
should get it running.   I do have 2 240D's but I would really like to

selling at least 1 of my 240Ds.

Yeah, I find it somewhat incredulous that people place a value on a car that’s
a market value for something that’s operable yet theirs doesn’t run. How can
that compare?

If that is the case it is quite strange. Usually its the shutoff
valve or other leaks. I have never see the ignition part go bad.

The one on the Albatross was full of oil, and popped apart.

2008-10-31 Thread Peter Frederick
The switch often fails if oil gets into the line from a bad shutoff
valve.

We had to replace the one on my brother's 76 W115, so it's not
unheard of.

Easy fix, just pop out the cluster, unscrew the switch, install new
one, re-install cluster. Maybe an hour's labor.

AFAIK, there's a vacuum switch (aka valve) on the back of the
ignition switch, and hard plastic vacuum lines running to it from
under the hood. I suppose if you knew which line was the vacuum
feed to the shutoff system you could hook up a Mity-Vac and see if
it leaks. If the dealer mechanic has been looking at it, he
probably already did that. Seems like the vac servo/solenoid/
actuator on the back of the IP fails more often than the valve/
switch on the steering column.

The _switch_ is behind there. They can go bad, especially
if they've gotten filled with oil. Perhaps the dealership's
standard repair is to flush out the lines and possibly replace
the vacuum switch whenever replacing the shutoff actuator.
(Since the latter can leak oil into the vacuum system.)

I believe the official name for the valve that controls the vacuum applied to

control valve. Not sure what the shutoff valve on the ignition switch is called.

Re: [MBZ] '85 300CD battery question

2007-09-02 Thread Tom Hargrave
I've owned a CD and several 300D's and I can say that the battery
compartment is tighter in the CDs. You won't notice the difference with a
Wal-Mart or discount parts house battery because these are smaller than the
correct battery but the difference is very obvious with the correct size
Mercedes or aftermarket battery.

The battery will lift right out of a 300D but you will struggle while
pulling a battery out of a CD because some of the sheet metal interferes
with the back edge of the battery. You have to lift up the back edge about 2
inches first & then pull the battery out at an angle. The same situation
exists with the 280CE - I owned one of these too.

The space where the battery sits & where the fuse box is at (opposite side)
are tighter due to the fact that the windshield is more sloped on the CD &
CE, but Mercedes used the same piece of glass that they used in the 4 door
123 body cars. This moved some of the sheet metal more foreword on the CD.

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave

It only took me 5-10 minutes to wrestle the battery out of the wrecked
190Dt. (it was hit behind the right front wheel, and the battery compartment
is a fair bit smaller than it was before) Reinstalling the battery was a

no, they are the same too. They have a different air cleaner, but it is

Re: [MBZ] '85 300CD battery question

2007-08-31 Thread Tom Hargrave
They are not the same. The coup windshield has a steeper slope & the car has
a lower roof line, but they used the same piece of glass. Also, the back
window is slightly shorter because of the lower roof & the seats sit lower
to accommodate the lower roof line. I'm sure they also did some juggling
around the rear of the engine compartment to accommodate the windshield
since the bottom edge would sit slightly more foreword.

Thanks,

Re: [MBZ] '85 300CD battery question

2007-08-30 Thread LarryT
Hi Todd,
If the wrong sized battery was installed it can be *really, really*
tough to get out. If the correct battery was installed it willl be merely
*really tough*. The batteries in W123 cars all seem to be more difficult to
change than is neccessary -

The lip of the cowl sticks out a little too far and as you noted, the
air filter assy interfers as well. It's been a while since I changed one
but will removing the air filter housing help? Otherwise it's a matter of
tilting and *coaxing* the battery out. Not easy for sure.

Good luck -

There is a battery clamp on the side of the tray that pushes a lip on
the batter under the side of the battery tray. That being said, I've
found that lifting straight up doesn't work all that well. If you rock
it to one side and get one of the lips on the battery out it comes out
much easier.

G'luck!

John
