Yeah, I though that was a bit of a d*ck move on their part. I certainly
wouldn't have given them $1000 for the car knowing they were going to scrap it
for $300-$400 later that week.

Want to bet it's still there on Friday?

That seller sounds a bit of a jerk. He thinks that on Thursday, he's going
to get $300 or $400 from a junkyard, more like $100 I'll bet. "...but

I'd park across the street from the seller's house, find out what junkyard

The 350 SDL does have a low level oil indicator. The switch is located
on the left side of the motor below the IP. When the motor is one liter
low the light will go one ( if the bulb is ok).

Re: [MBZ] Cheap Rodbender

2007-11-16 Thread Tom Hargrave
Maybe, but then maybe the key did get sucked into the oil pump after
wearing through the screen.

Another list member mentioned that it's not like a defect from the
factory he's probably right. More than likely, someone had the head
off at some time dropped the cam key into the engine. Then instead of
doing the right thing pulling the pan, he just figured that the oil
pump screen would stop any damage.

Many years ago, I was working on a friend's 1971 220D. We were advancing
the engine so that we could check timing chain stretch I immediately
noticed that the master link keeper was missing from the timing chain.
The master link was being held in place by grooves worn in the posts.

I told him that we had to pull the lower pan and he responded with why,
won't the screen block the part? We pulled the pan found the keeper
inbedded in the screen it was well worn into the pickup screen. I
don't know how many miles it would have taken to wear through but given
time, the keeper (or what was left of it) would have been sucked into
the oil pump.

How likely is it that a key was left in the pan AT THE FACTORY in the
first place? THAT seems unlikely to me... I'd think the pan would be
about the last thing installed on a new engine and probably done at
its own station on the line. More likely, if the story is true at

The seller wrote MB does not have a warning light or buzzer when there is
an oil pressure failure

Well, Heoo? Maybe that's because there's a Oil Pressure *gauge*
in the dash?? Duh!?

Yeah, but a buzzer would be a nice backup. Do you keep an eye glued
to the oil pressure every second?

My '91 VW did not have a pressure gauge, but it had an idiot light
AND a very loud, raspy buzzer if you lost pressure while the engine
was running. I activated it once or twice banking hard on highway
exit ramps, and it was impossible to miss.

A woodruf key left in the oil pan at the MB factory finally worked
its way into the oil pump, jamming it.

In order for that to happen, the screen just inside the oil intake
would have to fall out.

Unlikely.

Or the key would have to make it into the drive chain.
