Re: [MBZ] OM617 motor mounts
It’s a personal preference, but I prefer to do one side at a time rather than both. I think it’s easier to get things lined up when you do one at a time, as the side that’s still anchored serves as a reference point. I loosen everything with the engine in place, then remove the fasteners on one side, raise the engine enough to remove the mount, put the new mount in place, then carefully lower the engine to get everything lined up. I’ll use a drift or piece of rod stock to line the holes in the chassis up with the holes in the mount. Lather, rinse, repeat for the other side. For what it’s worth, these older mounts are a real joy to do compared with something like a W163 (ML) where you have to get at them from the side via the wheel well. -D > On Aug 14, 2021, at 8:09 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes > wrote: > > Thanks. Thanks. Oil lines are good for now. I did the transmission mount earlier, along with flex couplings. I remember the allen head bolts being a bit fiddly on the W123 when I did it. Re: [MBZ] OM617 motor mounts
My big tip: Be sure you have the right torque values for all the fasteners. My '85 wagon was non-turbo, but I mistakenly used the turbo engine procedure and the torque spec is far higher. I twisted off a fastener, had to order a new one from MB. Took a few days to get it. I think I was able to use a hardware store bolt for the interim and keep the car on the road. - Max Charleston SC On Sat, Aug 14, 2021 at 7:09 PM Rick Knoble via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > I was going to do a write up years ago. I was going to do a write up years ago. Tips? Hmm. Plywood or something to distribute the weight under the oil pan. Remove the shocks from the engine FIRST, so you don't forget. The shock shaft has two flats that take a seven mm open end wrench. When starting the Allen head bolts into the mounts upon completion, start them by hand, and perhaps even tighten them by hand. The mm brackets are aluminum. 6mm Allen required. Don't take the transmission mount loose if you're doing all three. Things can go cattywampus and it will be difficult to put everything right. If all goes well, I think they are fairly quick, maybe an hour per side. If the bolts are rusted in place and give you hell, all bets are off. - Max Charleston SC On Sat, Aug 14, 2021 at 5:10 PM Allan Streib via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > How long should the R job take for W116 OM617 motor mounts? > > It's been so long since I've done it (and it was on a W123), I don't > remember. When I was a kid, I always liked to tinker with stuff, take stuff apart. Maybe 5th grade age or so I took apart the lawn mower. Dad wasn't really happy but told me to put it back together. Which I did, and it didn't run. Went to the library, got a book on Tecumseh engines, learned what timing marks on gears were about, and got it back together correctly. Prices have gone down on these items as I recall they used to be a lot more expensive. It must be horribly frustrating to have to train people with limited skills, Rick. Re: [MBZ] OM617 motor mounts
The "kit" is listing at $81 and the shock at $54, assuming those are the right parts. That's for one side. I guess not pocket change but still cheap enough that I'd probably replace them rather than have to go back later and essentially do the labor twice.
