Others mention it's an '87. No, I did not take the time to load a
huge page.

The transmission in '87 would be the 700R4 - not a heavy duty
transmission from the factory. In '92 the name changed to 4L60. I
don't think there was any difference in the transmission from the
1/2 ton up. From the factory. Aftermarket rebuilds can make it a
strong, sturdy transmission.

I don't know about '87, but in the years prior there was a light
and a heavy 3/4 ton. Look at the VGW to see which it is. The
suspension on the light 3/4 ton is not much different than the 1/2
ton. The heavy 3/4 ton gets the heavier axle, bigger brakes, etc.

Rust shows up in the back corners between the bumper and the
wheels, the bottom of the doors, rocker panels, front wheel fender
aft of the wheel. Factory paint peals off as they had not yet
figured out how to use the EPA mandated paint process. Especially
bad on the roof.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Suburban

2016-09-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I had a brand new 1988 Suburban with the 350 TBI engine, base model, almost no
options besides heat, AC and radio, with rubber floor mats. Great vehicle,
plenty of power, easy to drive, and surprisingly good gas mileage considering
the size and weight.

Got rid of it a few years later when my round trip commute went from 5 miles to
70. I traded it in on a brand new 91 Ford Escort wagon. Dummy dealer sales guy
who was just a pup didn't calculate the residual on the lease and had to eat it
when I traded it. Lost his job over that mistake. Ouch.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Suburban

2016-09-16 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

I will say the same thing that I said about the Jeep Wagoneer.
It would make a good hobby vehicle for you but I cannot see it as your
daily driver.
You have an old pickup truck if I recall. It would be a lot like driving
your old pickup all the time.
Sort of a fun vehicle to have around but not if you have to use it every
day.

I drove a 1986 Chevy Suburban for almost 10 years but that was a while
back. I got it in August 1991 and sold it in December 2000.
It was useful as it had 3 rows of bench seating and seatbelts for 9
people. The engine never caused much trouble but the AT did. 700R4
transmissions were not wonderful.
Not much else was trouble - did normal stuff like tires, brakes, ball
joints etc.
AC was a bit of trouble as it had rear air and the lines under the truck
feeding the back unit would corrode with salt and leak. I had them
replaced twice.
Paint was not wonderful. I had it completely repaired and re-painted but
within a couple of years, it needed more repairs- especially around the
rear quarters and back doors.

Newer vehicles - especially trucks drive much nicer, make better
mileage, and are much quieter. I like the look of the old ones but I am
not interested in swapping my 2013 F150 Supercrew for an 80's Suburban.

I had an 87 Blazer, same truck. Very agricultural. Not much to go
wrong. I really liked it but it pretty much rusted out around the back
tailgate (NE truck).

TBI engine is your basic 350, would probably benefit from a EFI upgrade
that is readily available, or just a new carb. There is minimal
emissions junk on it. There is an app I found, and made a little dongle
to plug into the port, to watch what the TBI engine is doing on this app
on an XP laptop.

If it is in nice shape, it would probably run pretty much forever, not a
lot to go wrong, and what might go wrong is eminently fixable. I put a
new tranny on mine at some point, which is sitting in the garage
attached to a new engine I put in it (and then removed when I gave the
hulk away).

will and of course with live axles this won't handle terrifically well. Mileage won't be
terrific but then again we've already discussed that if you don't drive all that much it

'87 is the first year for the injected engine I think but theres not much that
goes wrong with them. I wouldn't say its a "great" engine, its underpowered for
its displacement but that does make them rugged. 3/4 ton will ride rougher than
a 1/2 ton will and of course with live axles this won't handle terrifically
well. Mileage won't be terrific but then again we've already discussed that if
you don't drive all that much it probably doesn't matter.

Too see the pictures you have to look in the description.

I'm not looking for comments about it is ugly or things like that.  I know the
350 TBI is a great engine and this is a ¾ ton, so it has the heavy duty
suspension and heavy duty transmission.

I am asking because I am trying to look at this without emotion.  I have always
liked the big square suburbans and this is my favorite colors (on the
exterior).  So, I am trying not be blinded by the fact that I like these.

Too me, it looks like it is in great shape and I don't see any real evidence of
rust other than minor surface rust on the underside.  But, am I looking in the
wrong place?

Re: [MBZ] OT suburban (was annoying drivers)

2012-04-16 Thread John Reames
Speaking of suburbans, has anyone looked at replacing the stock stanadyne model
80 sieve (on an 86 6.2L oil burner) with a FM 100 like is on the 6.5L turbos?

It looks like a little wiring harness adaptation (WIF sensor and fuel heater
lines), bracket fabrication, and placing a water drain valve.

Can anyone confirm/deny this?

Thanks.

From her description I thought it might have been a puncture from something

inner fender, or something indicating an acute failure. Anyway, she called
AAA and they put on the spare. The tires were getting to the point they
needed to be replaced, so she had that done up there, and they put the
blown-out tire in a bag for her to bring home to show me. I took one look at
it, and right in the middle of the tread was perfect 1/4 punched hole, with
a circle around it about 1.25 diameter, looked like a bolt or something had
hit it straight on. She probably heard the bolt hit the fender when it got
thrown out. The tire was totally destroyed, the sidewalls ripped open most
of the way around, radially, and a good part of the tread belt was separated
from both sides. So it just decompressed almost immediately from that
 puncture and almost totally shredded.

It kinda freaked her out, but she managed to get the truck off the road OK
and not lose (loose) control or anything.

Teaching her to change a tire is a futile effort, and probably safer anyway
to have someone come to do it on that road.

$800 for a new set of tires installed...damn those things have got expensive.

I have a client who used to run a big block 4X4 Suburban. This would have been
old enough to be carb rather than

loaded or empty. Almost no
variation - just a flat 6 mpg.

I don't think I can afford one of those.

less rear seat room. Later, we got a '99, the last year of that body style,

My '85 1/2 ton with carburetor-equipped 350 (5.7L) now has well
over 350,000. Original engine, original carburetor (rebuilt
twice), 2nd alternator, 2nd starter, 2nd AC compressor, 2nd
differential, original tires (kidding!!), and 4th transmission.

This transmission just lost torque-converter lockup. I haven't
done any troubleshooting yet. To be fair, I new one of those
transmissions wasn't going to last long - but it was cheap
(free) and I had more time than money at that point.

I've now got a line on a similar vintage 3/4 ton with a 6.2
diesel. No, I'm _not_ giving any location details!!

The 87 K30 crewcab dually I ended up with has turned out to be a pretty good

The truck used to belong to a friend. I remember it wasn't too happy pulling
grades with a slide-in camper towing a boat...

No Kiddin'! The new '07 6.7L Cummins (why do people say Cummings) has
more power than the '06 did even though it's heavier with 4WD. Maybe the
light shorter box makes up for it? I can't wait to put the travel trailer

a failed O2 sensor. According to the notice, drivability may be improved.

There's a '97 7.4 for $6500. I'd say that $2500 7.4 is either in sad shape or

I have had a 5.7 4x4 suburban, what kind of mileage would a 7.4 4x4
get?

I have some experience with those. We had one at the dealership I worked
at. We used it to pull a boat. It will get 9-10 mpg (on the highway)
loaded or not. It will pull like a freight train. When we pulled the
boat it would 9 mpg. If we took it on long trips, it would get 10-11
mpg. It was a beast.

2007-12-18 Thread Kevin
A friend has a 96 or 97, can't remember. It hauls large amounts of ass, and
has gobs of power. He tows a race car in an enclosed trailer with it, and
has no real complaints with it. Then again, it replaced an early suburban
with a carbed 454 and TH400. I don't think he's broken double digits with it
yet, and really only uses it for trips - he never drives it around town.

And his isn't 4x4 either.

$2500 is dirt cheap, it should be over twice that. There's something major
wrong with it, it has a bazillion miles on it, or the interior's shot.

If it's a carbureted 454, it will get 5 mpg empty, full, towing a
trailer, or coasting downhill with the tranny neutral. 6 mpg with a 50
 mph tailwind.

I don't know how GM did that, usually load makes a difference, but not

Probably better then, but if it has 4.11 rear end gears, not much.

However, one of the researchers at Forestry Canada bought one of the
retired Suburbans with a 305 and OD tranny -- got 25 mpg on the
highway! Had to use 3rd gear with a big load, though.

Undergeared?
I've noticed the same on dually pickups with 3 speed slushboxes and
4.xx : 1 final drive. It takes so much power to rev up the engine
and tranny that any other load is negligible.

Probably way off the power curve any time the vehicle is actually
moving -- that 454 doesn't spin very fast.

Why no one ever put a split rear end in those things amazes me -- split
4:11/3:77 it would get 15 or 18 mpg on the highway.

ALL chevy and GMC trucks have had fuel injection since 1988.

In fact, GMC made a few 350 with fuel injection in 1987.

I still want one of those - a Fire Engine RED 1987 GMC 4X4 Shortbed with
the fuel injected 350. 87 was the last year for the boxier body style
before they switch bodies in 88.

US, Canada is all metric.

I had great fun teasing people about how little they were saving on
fuel (I was in Sault Ste. Marie, just a one mile trip from the US,
$1.50 in bridge tickets) because they insisted in using the conversion
to Imperial gallons, not US. You had to buy 30 gal of gas and a gallon
on milk to pay for the tickets...

The situation changes, but the habits remain. There used to be
quite a gap between Michigna and Ontario fuel prices.

Last time I went through Soo, gas was about $1.15 downstate, I think I
paid $1.28 at Soo MI, and it was around $0.70 in Soo Ont. and as high
as $0.75 up hwy 17 on the way to Wawa. Even at 3:2 exchange rate Soo MI
was cheaper than Canadian prices. $0.7 x 3.8 x 2/3 = $1.77. I filled up
in Grayling, then topped off the tank in Soo to make sure I could make it
to Wawa and back without buying fuel in Ontario.
